The Triathlete Hour: ep. 21 - Cody Beals practices radical transparency

Play
Read more
Canadian pro Cody Beals is known for his open-ness and honesty—and he doesn't hold back here. He talks to us about dealing with pressure after his break-out 2018 season where he won his debut pro Ironman and what specific mistakes he made in Kona last year. He's also very open about his struggles with disordered eating, mental health, and coming out five years ago.

Besides being the Ironman Mont Tremblant course record holder, Cody is best known for his public budgets and training logs. He shares exactly how much he makes (and isn't making this year) and how he won IM MT on 17 hours/week — and how he goes to bed at midnight!

With all that honesty, we thought it'd be be great to also get the other perspective from an endurance sports agent. Chris Douglas from Presidio Sports Management breaks down what makes a good contract, what bad clauses athletes should watch out for, and what the financial future of the sport looks like.

Cody Beals Part II - Cancellations, Training, and the New Professional Triathletes Organisation

Play
Read more

In part II of our conversation with professional triathlete Cody Beals, Jason & Cody discuss the reason for the countless hours of training and preparation: to actually race! However, as races are being postponed, pushed, and even cancelled, how does a pro triathlete stay sharp? Cody talks about virtual racing, as well as his own 20 minute time trial pushing north of 400 watts. Of course they also chat about IRONMAN and their communication to their pro athletes, as well as what they're doing to assist them during this cancelled season. They also discuss the newly formed Professional Triathletes Organisation and what they are doing to help pro triathletes get to the point of earning a living similar to tennis or golf. This fun, two part conversation is wrapped up discussing Cody's (hopeful) race schedule leading up to Kona in February, as well as his new YouTube channel...which may or may not include his famous cat. Cody Beals Part I - Income Generation for a Pro Triathlete When Races are Cancelled

Play
Read more

After recording his first win as a professional triathlete in 2015, Cody Beals first realized you can actually make a living swimming, biking, and running around the world in spandex. In Part I of this interview, Jason and Cody take a deep dive into the finances of a pro triathlete and discuss how more money is made from sponsorships rather than from standing on the podium at the end of the race. With the race calendar essentially wiped out for 2020, Cody explains how he has built a balanced portfolio of sponsors whose financial incentives are less about winning and more about his personality. Although this has enabled him to survive financially without races, Cody is honest about the fact that he didn't sign up to be a social media influencer or a sales rep for sponsors...and he has some questions about how certain companies can make it through the pandemic.

In part 1, you'll hear an in-depth interview with Canadian Ironman Champion Cody Beals who started to struggle with disordered eating when he went to University and was on the cross country team.

"I could see a trend that I could get lighter and I would start to perform better, but I was on borrowed time with that." He says it's taken him a decade to finally feel better about his body.

You'll also hear Witsup's Stef Hanson's interview with top age group athlete and coach Felicity Joyce, who was diagnosed with anorexia when she was younger.

Felicity explains how her aim to be better, healthier and faster at sport when she was in the last few years of high school spiralled out of control, landed her in hospital and ruined relationships with friends and family.

On this episode of Le Run Down I spoke with pro triathlete and Ironman Mont Tremblant champion, Cody Beals.

He's relatively new to long course triathlon but has been amazingly successful, winning all three Ironmans he has entered.
Cody shared some insight into his unique training style, as well as race strategy, nutrition, mental strength, and his challenges as an athlete.

He's on a roll going into the Ironman World Championships in Kona, and we hope he gets the Top 10 finish he's looking this October.
