AP Now Episode 80: Mary Schaeffer with Tom Flynn on The Good, The Bad and The Ugly of 2020/21 for AP and Accounting

APNow

In this episode, we take a brief look back at what the business community experienced in 2020 and then looked forward to the new year. We also explore what the work and hiring environment will look like in 2021. We start with a look back, and of course, that is the ugly … and the bad, and then look forward to the good. Recognizing that some folks will want to focus primarily on the good (something I can totally understand), we’ve included time markers for where each part starts. To be honest, there are lessons to be learned from reviewing the bad and the ugly, as painful as those issues may be. The Good Commentary starts at the 15:45-minute mark How we’ll work and hire in 2021 at the 11-minute 40-second mark The Bad Commentary starts at the 6-minute mark The Ugly Commentary starts at the 1-minute 20-second mark Host: Mary Schaeffer (www.ap-now.com) Guest: Tom Flynn (www.spendmend.com) Credit: Music: https://www.purple-planet.com

They are from a wide variety of companies, literary from around the globe. The panel (going in very rough geographical order) was comprised of Sandra Firman from Australia, Maciej Boryslawski from Germany, Stewart Griffith from the UK, Louise Guigue from Canada, and Regina Italiano from the US. This session focused on how everyone was doing and lessons learned throughout the crisis. It began with a brief discussion about how the accounts payable function has changed over the past decade. We then moved on to the inevitable lessons learned. Everyone got a good laugh when Regina commented on patience. The group then discussed what the future of accounts payable would look like and closed with comments on what best practices we can share as a global community. Use box at the left of www.ap-now.com Learn more about AP Appreciation Week at https://www.ap-now.com/public/AP-Appreciation-Week-2020-2.cfm In this episode of the AP Now podcast, Mary Schaeffer is joined by another Top 50 AP Influencer, Stewart Griffiths. In this episode, Stewart shares the journey his team has undergone as it moved remotely and the role that technology played. His team was lucky in that they each were given a laptop loaded with the apps they needed when they were sent home. Like many, they had little notice (two days). He then went on to discuss the various technologies used by the team to help keep them on track. It wasn’t all about invoice handling, much of it was about keeping in touch and keeping morale up. My favorite was his instruction to the staff to go out and find something on YouTube that showed something Teams could do that the others didn’t know. He pointed out that if ever there was a time to make the case for new technology, it was now. He offered some tips on how to do that. He ended the conversation with some tips on how to move forward through these unusual times as well as a promise to return for a future podcast. AP Now Episode 36: Mary Schaeffer and Sandra Firman on AP Technology that Promotes the Right Behavior

APNow

Joining the AP Now podcast from down under, Sandra Firman shared with Mary Schaeffer her thoughts on making sure AP technology promotes the right behavior. Originally from New Zealand, Sandra now makes her home in Melbourne. She was just getting to work on a Friday morning when she got on the call, which was late Thursday afternoon in the States. She began by addressing the question of “Who’s the Boss?” She expounded on her theory that technology, if it is really helpful should be our servant. She has seen too many instances when the technology becomes the master as end users attempt to make it work. She then moved onto discuss an issue near and dear to the hearts of anyone who works in or manages the accounts payable function: Invoices. Too often, invoices create huge headaches for the organizations receiving them. She then moved on to discuss an issue many chose to ignore: Authorizations and coding. Technology, if used correctly, can help with both of those responsibilities. She also addresses the nightmare many deal with, the issue of getting invoices approved and processed in a timely manner. Sandra is full of useful insights and we hope she wll return to share more of them with our audience. AP Now Episode 8: Mary Schaeffer with Ellen Leith on 5 Big Issues Impacting P2P

APNow

In this episode on the AP Now podcast, Mary Schaeffer is joined by Ellen Leith, founder of the Purchase to Pay Network. Ellen joins us from the UK to discuss the five biggest trends impacting the purchase-to-pay function, or as we call it on this side of the pond, the procure-to-pay function. While many of the issues are the same on both sides of the ocean, it is fascinating to hear Ellen’s take on them. She begins by describing how she identified a gap in the marketplace when it came to finding good information in one place for the purchase-to-pay function as her impetus for starting the Network. She then went on to identify and discuss the five most important trends impacting the function. She believes, as we do here at AP Now, that analytics will play a big role but cautions the audience to be smart about the KPIs they choose to monitor. Otherwise, time is spent cranking out numbers that could be used for other purposes. Partnering with other business units, taking advantage of cloud technologies and being alert to identify risk were also discussed in some detail. The discussion at the end about corporate social responsibility is not something often discussed in relation to accounts payable and procure-to-pay. After listening to Leith that may very well change.   Host: Mary Schaeffer (www.ap-now.com) Guest: Ellen Leith (www.p2pnetwork.org) Sponsor: Stampli (www.stampli.com/APNow) Credit: Music: https://www.purple-planet.com

AP Now Episode 2: Mary Schaeffer with Lynn Larson on the Pending Release of Apple Credit Cards

APNow

The announcement of a new Apple card has garnered quite a bit of interest in the payments and accounts payable communities. The fact that it can reside on your iPhone, and only an iPhone, as well as the Titanium material of the physical card is garnering a lot of attention. In this episode, AP Now’s Mary Schaeffer interviews Recharged Education’s Lynn Larson about this exciting new development. The product has many interesting features and we were wondering what, if any, impact it would have on corporate card programs. In this episode, Lynn describes in detail how this card will work, where it will fit in the card world and what makes it different from other credit cards. She talks about how it fits in the wallet app, what the fees are and the cash back feature. We also examine what the hurdles would be for an organization that was looking to adopt it as part of its payment strategy. The segment closes with a look at why the business world should care and a look into the future about its potential impact.
