Episode 019: With the postponement of the 2020 Summer Olympics and Paralympics, I wanted to honor the amazing women in sport. So, I’m launching The Female Elite Olympic and Paralympic Series. This series will share the incredible stories of how these women made it to the Olympic and Paralympic level and what it took to get there. Michelle Konkoly is a four time Paralympic medalist in the Rio 2016 Games. Gold (50m free, 100m free), silver (34 pt. 4x100m freestyle relay), bronze (34 pt. 4x100m medley relay). She grew up swimming as an able-bodied athlete and competed in high school on state level relay teams. She returned to the sport 2011 after falling out of a window from a five-story dorm building at Georgetown University. She sustained an injury to her spine, a broken foot and a punctured lung. While attending Georgetown University, she won several awards including Most Resilient Female Athlete, The John Hensler Award for Most Improved Female Swimmer, Princeton University’s 'Big Al' Inspirational Swimmer Award and was named in the Big East All-Academic Team. She is currently in medical school at Thomas Jefferson University. Team USA Swimmer: Michelle Konkoly

I’ll Have Another Podcast Episode 69: Michelle Konkoly What a privilege and honor to talk with this incredible young woman. Michelle is a 2x Paralympic Champion, a 2x World Record Holder and 4x medalist for Team USA in swimming. She is the proud mom to Ollie the Corgi and after pursuing some big dreams competing on a world stage professionally, she is headed back to her home state of Pennsylvania to begin Medical School. In 2011, Michelle fell out of her dorm window on the 5th floor at Georgetown University and woke up in the trauma unit with a spinal cord injury. She was a competitive swimmer for Georgetown at the time and after 8 months of physical therapy and rehab she was back to school and also eventually back in the water with her team. She shares the whole story in detail, but she has permanent nerve damage which qualified her to try out for and compete in the Paralympics, classified as an S9 swimmer. She teaches us all about the lingo and how the Paralympics works in this interview- I learned so much! Though, she fell short of making the Paralympic team in 2012, she walked into 2016 seeded number one in her race, going on to not only win a Gold Medal, but also break World Records.
