AIR 030 / Jessy Lanza

AIR Podcast

Joining me for AIR's 30th episode is Canadian singer, songwriter, and producer @JessyLanza.A classically trained musician, Jessy has been making music most of her life, while her critically acclaimed first album, Pull My Hair Back, released in 2013 on Hyperdub. Since then, she has been creating a steady collection of work, a mixture of pop electronica and R&B that, like 2020's All The Time, often delves into her personal journey. In this conversation, we look back on Jessy’s songwriting influences, her creative process, and her unique approach to storytelling. AIR is proudly produced in partnership with Bear Radio. Ep 5 - Jessy & Jessier: Why Jessie Reyez & Jessy Lanza Are Vital

fSobriety

Hello, friends! Welcome to the first in a semi-regular series of musical-themed fSobriety episodes in which Craig and James ponder the existential question, “Which contemporary musical artists are the most culturally vital to this chaotic and complex era?” and proceed to each present the case for an artist of their choice.Brace yourselves for industrial volumes of shameless fangirling as Craig dives deep into the music, background and aesthetics of Colombian-Canadian singer-songwriter Jessie Reyez – a journey that encompasses the rich and multifarious cultural landscape of Latin America; the true nature of DIY art versus some of the misconceptions around it; the importance of representation; the geopolitics of US-Latin American relations; magical realism; Surrealism; the poetry that exists in the juxtaposition of the sacred with the profane; and the reasons why RnB, even at its most mainstream, is often more audacious than most self-proclaimed “transgressive” music.   Then James takes the wheel for a detour into an alternate Ontario awash with neon and icy cool electro rhythms as he rallies for soulful techno-pop artist Jessy Lanza. In his quest to convert the uninitiated, he invites us to join Jessy in the psychogeography of a midnight bike ride, consider the artifice of morning talk shows, face the numerological challenge posed by cryptic phone numbers, and witness the crumbling resolve of Scotland’s two best drummers in the shadow of Lanza’s glory, ultimately driving us towards the celebration of this singular artist as the reclusive sexual pop queen that the age of Covid lockdown demands. As ever, the drinks flow freely and there’s time to catch up on recent cultural developments, including the release of the WandaVision trailer and our hosts’ reactions to episodes 5 and 6 of HBO’s Lovecraft Country.  Presented with apologies in advance to fans of Nick Cave, and also to the citizens of Brighton and Hamilton (not the one in Ontario, nor the HamilTron, but the other one).  #2ManyJessies #GetThemJessiesRoonYe #GoodCanadians #FuckTicJessie Reyez on Twitter: @JessiereyezJessy Lanza on Twitter: @jessy_lanzaJessie Reyez - Far Awayhttps://youtu.be/JF0bPET0XNYJessie Reyez - Crazyhttps://youtu.be/MCkmq93g0MAJessie Reyez - Intrudershttps://youtu.be/vVhqNnFh25EJessie Reyez - Great Onehttps://youtu.be/uweEDKsAhxgJessy Lanza - Oh Nohttps://youtu.be/kaNZbUENKjkJessy Lanza - Lick in Heavenhttps://youtu.be/V3D7EEpdlY4For all the music we mention in each episode, please check out the fSobriety Jukebox playlist on Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1jAIayDqTBbdWEl339DEST?si=2TfQrUaERYGXQIQbfWg59Q  Woodsy’s reading list: Open Veins of Latin America by Eduardo Galeano Latin America: From Colonization to Globalization by Noam Chomsky Building the Commune by George Ciccariello-MaherBeneath the United States by Lars SchoultzSolidarity: Latin America and the US Left in the Era of Human Rights by Steve Striffler A History of Violence Living and Dying in Central America by Daniela Maria Ugaz and John Washington Nixon, Kissinger, and Allende: U.S. Involvement in the 1973 Coup in Chile by Lubna QureshiA History of Coups: The US Doesn't Want Socialism to Succeed by Reina Sultanhttps://wearyourvoicemag.com/us-backed-coups-socialism-socialist-bolivia/

Midnight Looms 029 – JESSY LANZA – October 6 2020

Midnight Looms

It's a new month and we're kicking it off big. JESSY LANZA is joining us via Zoom. We assumed that she was back safe and sound in her home town Hamilton, Ontario, but it turns out she's still down in the States, coming to us from her California Stronghold :PWe live in a reality where we all spend more and more time alone and our lives are ruled by technology. Jessy's music has these ever present themes of isolation and synthetic reality and it makes her music very NOW. Jessy Lanza is truly an artist for the times, and on a show where we celebrate the music from the end of the world, you can bet we're really into what she's doing. GOBS chats with Jessy, while playing a medley of tracks from her new album, ALL THE TIME.This episode begins with a blast of energy! HOUSE and FUTURE BASS from artists like HATIRAS, RAVEN, and a classic by CAJMERE. Gobs puts THE NEEDLE ON THE RECORD of a brand new piece of wax featuring "QUEER JUKE" by MELLEEFRESH & DJ GENDERFLUID. All that before a set of FOOTWORK, a Bootleg CHROMEO remix by Gobs, himself, some THUNDERCAT, some JUNIOR BOYS, a STONER JAM by MXXWLL, and a JANET JACKSON anthem just for Jessy. With CANADIAN THANKSGIVING just around the corner, we end this episode with what we hope will be a tradition, just like it is on campus stations all over North America ;)What an epic Journey-By-DJ. You won't hear a musical adventure like this anywhere else. Only on Midnight Looms!Do you make music? We want to hear it, so SEND YOUR SUBMISSIONS! sophylooms@gmail.com or hit us up on our SOCIALS.If you were feeling this EPISODE sign up to our MAILING LIST and never miss a podcast, playlist, video or free download.MIDNIGHT LOOMS airs every Tuesday, 11pm EST, on RADIOWESTERN.CAPLAYLIST1. The electronic pop artist shares fantastic stories about her childhood connections to the rave scene in her hometown of Hamilton, Ontario, what it was like to road trip across the U.S. at the start of the pandemic, filming music videos in her van, and the lyrical implications of the word “daddy” on her new album, All The Time, now available from Hyperdub. MADE OF THINGS

Jessy Lanza is on Made of Things! This is one of those which are mainly crazy talk. Joe Pesci, rotary phones, spirit animals, Sumol, random memories, saying hi to Amy, Mozart on tour, isolation and what means I love you? Nônô chimes in lot on this one. Watch it or we’ll whack ya! (by “it”, we mean the episode). Also, NEW WEBSITE! Website // YouTube // Facebook // Download // iTunes // Instagram // Twitter photo: Nônô Noxx
