Ecommerce Customer Avatar with Emma Schermer Tamir

Play
Read more
You have to tailor your message to that specific Ecommerce customer avatar. It sounds simple but you have to be thoughtful about the message and image.
CUSTOMER AVATAR
Who is shopping and what matters to them

Durable and also professional and tough and feminine
Who is your customer/customer avatar
It would be simplistic to say for example that all women who want backpacks want the same thing.
Backpacks for female business owners
Let’s say you try to sell backpacks for female business owners as your Ecommerce customer avatar.

What happens is that others still see that as the most trustworthy backpack.

It has the ability to go broader than the target customer.
Backcountry backpacks
That are not that many people that do intense backcountry journeys

But people like to assemble the dried meals and hiking boots and the backpacks - when people want the best, they are going to look to the more core customer.
Focus
You can tailor your message to that specific Ecommerce customer avatar.

One of the biggest and simplest errors to fix in new listings:

Sellers do months doing product research etc.

People say things like “our material is the strongest in the market”

It’s focussed on the business and the product.

But the buyer needs it to be about themselves, not about the product or your company.

You need to be able to talk about the problem of your zipper getting puckered in your bag.
For new sellers
Launching 1st product - no whole catalogue for your Ecommerce customer avatar.

But begin brand development

Helps position you ready to launch own site
Why plunge into this
It’s not hard to do

It should not only shape listing.

Shape types of products to present.

Also updates that you make
Infographics
“A picture is worth 1000 words”

If it’s worth so many, however, WHICH words?

Being thoughtful about what the message is in the image, you can control the idea they take away.
Example - coffee grinder
If you have a picture that is a bunch of people sitting around a campfire, and everyone is drinking coffee.

The idea you’re trying to communicate is you can recreate the ritual of the day in a different environment.
Reinforce points in infographics
There are maybe points you mention in the listing copy, but you want

There may be more literal points - you must get across important benefits or details:

 Either pique curiosity
Build confidence
Seal the deal

EBC - Enhanced Brand Content
Does it matter?

Emma is still a fan of it, especially in competitive categories

It’s a way to set yourself apart
Depending on the device the shopper is on, the description may be buried (desktop), so the first point of contact is worth considering

EBC and indexing concern

EBC or A+ content feels like you
Even if your standard description is not visible, that doesn’t mean you can’t have all the words in the standard description

As customers become more sophisticated and want to identify with a brand.
EBC enables you to give everything you wanted in infographics
It’s the perfect place to communicate multiple points across multiple different photos and text boxes.

Process for Writing a Listing with Emma Schermer Tamir

Play
Read more
Process for writing a listing needs a deep understanding of what is going on with the competitive space. Being thoughtful about your strategy is key.
Construction principles
Competitive structure

You need to understand what is going on in your competitive category

What are customers expecting?

So start by looking at your competitors’ products

Then look at the reviews of your competition

Is everyone complaining about something that your product has solved
You might find uses of your product
You may get life case studies

Keyword research

SEO is what happens before people get to the page
But you have to get traffic - be very clear about the keywords
Make sure you can run PPC and organic

Keyword strategy
Be very thoughtful about this

It can be very tempting to see keywords with large search volume

But that can really steer you in the wrong direction
Keyword stuffing vs. Relevance
Make sure the words you choose for the copy is thoughtful

Are they words that customers want to see on your listing?

Eg: misspellings or Spanish
Client work

Many clients bring keywords using multiple tools.
Others don’t feel confident. Or they are curious to see if there is an extra phrase.

Emma offers research
They can also review research

Sometimes you have a case that looks like high search volume and low competition - but sometimes you can do a google search and realise that something is a brand name.
Handling niches that are competitive/will it work
Some clients have a great opportunity and they are leaving money on the table.

It’s rare that one of the clients hasn’t at least place an order.

Sometimes space can be dominated by a brand - because there isn’t any competition. So you may be able to address a similar segment but at a different price point, or colour, or ingredients.

In some categories, there can be a lack of on-Amazon search volume.

But your market share is way more important than total addressable market

There can STILL be an opportunity to outsell a traditional brand.
Example - “Cover Girl” makeup
They recently reformulated their entire product line to be cruelty-free

If even one of their products is made in China, this comes off the table.

On Amazon for one of their top-selling mascaras, the only indication of this is a tiny leaping bunny symbol on one image. So if you’re wanting to purchase a royalty-free mascara, you might not even know this is a relevant option for you.
Benefits
People get confused about what a benefit is.

For example, a heavy-duty country backpack that is going to go into extreme environments and it will be an essential part of their journey.

If you just say it’s “durable”, what does that actually mean?

It means that people can with confidence going into tough terrain

Protect their most valuable possessions
Enable them to complete their journey

When you’re presenting info, you shouldn’t save best for last -lead with your best benefits.

In journalism, there is an old practice called inverted pyramid - most important to least important in descending order.

Back when you had stories that were in presses, they needed to be able to lop off the least important parts of the story.

Really grab them, then help them understand why that matters.

Principles of Writing Great Listings with Emma Schermer Tamir

Play
Read more
Principles of Writing Great Listings is surrounded by a degree of thoughtfulness to it. Properly optimising your listing can impact the bottom line.
Why it matters
The words you use matter for a host of reasons if you don't know the principles of writing great listing.

Keywords may not rank if you don’t get the right ones
Properly optimising your listing can impact the bottom line of your business.

Some RESULTS (numbers) blended with quick client case study (a.k.a story)
Worked with a client in June - CVR was 25.61%

After optimisation increased to 37% and stayed there

That means more of the people will be purchasing.

That was a change of

Reassessing the keywords
Creating a core listing
Upgraded to EPC
Infographics with great text

This client didn’t create new images!

The EBC was new but the words were more powerful when you know the principles of writing great listing.
Rule of thumb for infographic text
If you need to zoom in to read, it’s too much text

The text should emphasis 1-2 key points

Words matter to different shoppers to differing degrees.

Some casual visual shoppers may still be put off by

Incomplete information
Bad spelling or grammar

This gives them a chance to use the competition

A lot of the times, we have unconscious triggers to worry about the customer.

We don’t want any question marks or mistrust
Background
“Curiosity”

What makes Emma different from other copywriters is obsessive curiosity.

Always reading varied topics. Emma is far more of a generalist - and this can be a great advantage when it comes to marketing.

Not only do we market different products but to varied types of people.

Certain types of people making certain types of decisions need certain things
Writing =structure as well as words
If you’re creating a FaceBook ad or a landing page

If there is something incongruent between your tone in the FaceBook ad and the amazon listing, that can be very off-putting.

You need a cohesive story and you need someone to be in charge of all of that when you know the principles of writing great listing.
Building Brand Equity
If you’re wanting to sell your business or expand off Amazon, it’s going to be harder if you’re not clear about all this stuff.
Company Culture
If you’re not clear about the culture you want, it’s much more challenging to reverse engineer things.

Whereas if you hire very intentionally, and the same is true for a brand.

If you’re thoughtful about what you eventually want to achieve.

It should have more value to it.
Be the architect more than just the writer
As 3rd party merchants come under more scrutiny, it’s important to appear legitimate

There is more of a trust issue
Even something as simple as coffee products

There are so many types of coffee drinkers
And so many
Gaining Trust
If you are selling something topical eg: cosmetics

Or something ingestible with humans or animals.

You need to double and triple-check everything

 - you need to be a reputable brand

Their site is hosted on Shopify - there are little cards that show you how to facilitate higher Conversion rates
Conversion optimisation
Guarantee

One talks about the guarantee
Everyone knows if you’re Prime, you get a 30-day guarantee
It shows that you stand behind the product

Don’t try to be all things to all people
Trying to be all things to everything  - if you have people who shouldn’t be purchasing products you’ll get issues

It’s more work
It can affect your account with high returns
It’s creating a bad customer experience

It’s still inconvenient
Deep Dive Listing Creation Guide
amazingfba.com/deepdive

This is an exercise with a lot of questions

It’s helpful for those just starting off

But it’s also great if you’re 3,4, 10 years in business if you are lacking direction and a unifying theme.

So it’s very important to include important keywords
