Graeme Armstrong is from Airdrie, North Lanarkshire, where his teenage years were spent within the gang culture of the area. Graeme defied the odds and you have to say a lot of people’s expectations to complete an honours degree at Stirling University, this in spite of the fact that he was struggling with his own drug addiction, alcohol abuse and violence. He returned to Stirling to complete a Master of letters in creative writing in 2013, graduating with merit in 2015. His debut novel, ‘The Young Team’, whilst not a biography, was certainly inspired by his own experiences and his is a voice that deserves to be listened to.

In this episode, we talked about everything from creativity and mental health to the feeling of inner peace and joy that comes from climbing a mountain- how there are almost two versions of Scotland- the incredible highlands and grey, dark council estate vibe we both grew up around and that Graeme artfully outlines in the young team... We also talked about hope, and the impact of having someone who believes in you, even when you don't believe in yourself. -Such a wonderful conversation, thank you so much to Graeme for sharing his time and for reading two wonderful passages from the book- I have never attended a live book reading, however, I am so glad reading has become such a big part of my life... and I think the young team bridges that gap- it is such a great read for people who enjoy reading but also people who have not picked up a book since school...Graeme's book- The Young Team (really amazing read- can't recommend it enough)other great conversations with Graeme:1. The Mild Mannered Army
I am joined by author Graeme Armstrong to discuss his debut novel "The Young Team". Inspired by his own experiences of gang culture in North Lanarkshire Graeme has produced a debut novel that has generated real excitement and that looks set to be viewed as a classic in time. With themes of family, identity, love, loss and belonging running throughout the tales of life as part of the Young Team this is a book that captures you, excites you, disturbs you and challenges you. With explicit content and discussion of some potentially triggering content.
Graeme Armstrong recently published his first novel 'The Young Team' - due to demand, it had to be reprinted five days after it was released. Inspired by some of his own experiences, the book is full of guts, power, humour and humanity. A conversation with author Graeme Armstrong about his book 'The Young Team' and life in a gang in Airdrie, Coatbridge, moving to uni in Stirling and how writing his book saved his life.
