Echoes Podcast: Agnes Obel, 25th Icon & Xylem

Interview Podcast – Echoes

Echoes Podcast: Agnes Obel, the 25th Icon of Echoes and Emancipator, Rena Jones and Flowerpulse Emancipator, Rena Jones, and Flowerpulse weave their electronic roots together into the ambient excursion of Xylem, their debut album. Emancipator has been featured heavily on the show with his gritty electronic sound, while Rena Jones is an old favorite who mixes electronics with her cello and violin. Flowerpulse is her husband (Marc Sciglimpaglia) and he’s a solo electronic artist and guitarist as well. They converge on music drawn from nature, with sounds recorded in the wilds of Oregon and electronically transformed into their organic mulch. We go to the garden with three electronic explorers in the Echoes Podcast.. Singer and composer Agnes Obel creates a sound that is both introspective and incandescent. She seduced us with her debut album, Philharmonics and has thoroughly enchanted us with each succeeding album, three of which were Echoes CD of the Month picks (see reviews below) and two were the number one album of the year. She is the 25th Icon of Echoes and among the 30 Icons, she is one of only four to have begun their career in the 21st Century. We’ll hear an extended portrait this amazing artist, who creates a deep, chamber pop sound. Join us with Agnes Obel, the 25th Icon of Echoes. The Show On The Road with Z. Lupetin

This week, a conversation with renowned Danish pianist, experimental composer, and atmospheric-folk songstress Agnes Obel. Recorded high above Hollywood in the famed Capitol records building (Obel was recently signed to Blue Note Records), host Z. Lupetin takes an intimate tour of her newest work “Myopia”, which shows Obel at her most personal and aurally fearless. Born in Copenhagen and based in Berlin, Obel’s albums warrant repeat listening, as it’s often hard to know exactly what instruments are playing at any given time. At times the darting, looping piano and quicksilver string work seem like a chamber orchestra, or maybe the songs in “Myopia” are secretly the technicolor backdrop and emotive score to a film that only she sees. It’s been nearly a decade since her transcendent DIY debut album “Philharmonics” put her into many people’s minds (she may not be very well known yet in the States, but she is a gold-record selling underground star in many parts of Europe). This past Spring, Obel was supposed to be playing the expansive Greek Theater in Los Angeles before Covid-19 forced her to stay in Berlin, which for an artist that creates hushed, often lyricless songs you probably can’t dance to, is an impressive leap. Listen to her newest “Myopia” on Blue Note Records.
