Sermon Guide
A New Normal - Part 3: Make Room

1 John 2:26
I am writing these things to warn you about those who want to lead you astray. But you have received the Holy Spirit (NIV and Greek say the anointing from him) and he lives within you

Anointing = to smear or rub with oil

Ephesians 5:18
Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit.

The Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit:

Draws us to God (opens our hearts to believing in him)
Saves us (gives a new heart)
Seals us (Keeps us saved)
Lives in us (help us live day to day)
Fills Us (Fills us up like and empty cup)
Joshua 3:5
Then Joshua told the people, “Purify yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do great wonders among you.”

Sermon Guide
Thriving in Babylon Week 3: Wisdom (Book of Daniel)

Big Idea: Influence is earned.

Daniel 2:46-49
Then King Nebuchadnezzar threw himself down before Daniel and worshiped him, and he commanded his people to offer sacrifices and burn sweet incense before him. The king said to Daniel, “Truly, your God is the greatest of gods, the Lord over kings, a revealer of mysteries, for you have been able to reveal this secret.” Then the king appointed Daniel to a high position and gave him many valuable gifts. He made Daniel ruler over the whole province of Babylon, as well as chief over all his wise men. At Daniel’s request, the king appointed Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego to be in charge of all the affairs of the province of Babylon, while Daniel remained in the king’s court.

2 Ways Wisdom Prepared Daniel for Influence

1. The wisdom to prepare for his opportunity.
Daniel 1:17-20
God gave these four young men an unusual aptitude for understanding every aspect of literature and wisdom. And God gave Daniel the special ability to interpret the meanings of visions and dreams. When the training period ordered by the king was completed, the chief of staff brought all the young men to King Nebuchadnezzar. The king talked with them, and no one impressed him as much as Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. So they entered the royal service. Whenever the king consulted them in any matter requiring wisdom and balanced judgment, he found them ten times more capable than any of the magicians and enchanters in his entire kingdom.

2. The wisdom to fight the right battles.
-Our job is not to win the battle our job is to follow Jesus.

Discussion Questions
1) Is there someone you know that exhibits hope, humility and wisdom? Describe how they interact with people.

2) Talk about a time when you struggled with “participating in the world but not endorsing it”.

3) Do you struggle with “choosing your battles” and feel like everything is a fight? How would it help to consider whether it’s just something you don’t like or God forbids it?

4) Name an area in your life where you want more influence. Which one of the 3 characteristics (hope, humility, wisdom) do you need to ask the Holy Spirit to help you develop, so that you can earn more influence?

Welcome to Hope City Church!

Sermon Guide
Thriving in Babylon Week 2: Humility (Book of Daniel)

Big Idea: You’re only as spiritual as the kindness you show to those you disagree with.

Daniel 1:5-15
The king assigned them a daily ration of food and wine from his own kitchens. They were to be trained for three years, and then they would enter the royal service. Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah were four of the young men chosen, all from the tribe of Judah. The chief of staff renamed them with these Babylonian names: Daniel was called Belteshazzar. Hananiah was called Shadrach. Mishael was called Meshach. Azariah was called Abednego. But Daniel was determined not to defile himself by eating the food and wine given to them by the king. He asked the chief of staff for permission not to eat these unacceptable foods. Now God had given the chief of staff both respect and affection for Daniel. But he responded, “I am afraid of my lord the king, who has ordered that you eat this food and wine. If you become pale and thin compared to the other youths your age, I am afraid the king will have me beheaded.” Daniel spoke with the attendant who had been appointed by the chief of staff to look after Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. “Please test us for ten days on a diet of vegetables and water,” Daniel said. “At the end of the ten days, see how we look compared to the other young men who are eating the king’s food. Then make your decision in light of what you see.” The attendant agreed to Daniel’s suggestion and tested them for ten days. At the end of the ten days, Daniel and his three friends looked healthier and better nourished than the young men who had been eating the food assigned by the king.

3 Questions to Ask about Your Interactions with Others

1. Is my tone about culture/people angry or respectful? (James 1:19-20)

2. Do I focus on the hypocritical areas of my life as much or more than I focus on other people?

3. Are there any non-christians in your life who disagree with your beliefs but respect you as a person? (Proverbs 3:3-4)
Discussion Questions
1) What words would you use to describe “Christianity”? Has your definition changed over time?

2) Do you find it hard to show kindness and respect to someone who disagrees with you? Do you feel like there are situations when you don’t have to show kindness or respect?

3) Of the 3 questions asked about your interactions with others, which one do you struggle with the most?

Jason Isaacs is Superman: Red Son, an Elseworld Premiere Celebration!

Take some time this week to remember your original happy hour: Saturday mornings as a kid, waking up at dawn, jumping on the couch with a bowl of chocolate cereal, turning on the ‘toons, tuning out the outside world and working your way into a sugar hangover before noon. This week, to take our minds off of a global-wide pandemic, we go “elseworld” with a review and celebration of the DC Animated Universe release of Superman: Red Son with a red carpet interview montage of the leading voices and creators including the voice of “Superman”, Jason Isaacs, “Lois Lane” Amy Acker, “Wonder Woman” Vanessa Marshall, “James Olsen” Phil Morris, “John Stewart” Phil LaMarr, “Hal Jordan” Sasha Roiz, “Batman” Roger Craig Smith, “Superior Man” Travis Wellingham and director Sam Liu.

Based on DC’s famed Elseworlds tale from 2003, Superman: Red Son takes place in an alternate reality where the spaceship bearing the last survivor of Krypton crash lands – not in rural Kansas, but in Stalinist Russia. Can this Cold War-era Earth survive the coming of a Soviet Superman?  Can this real world podcast survive the coming of a virtual only world? Recorded at the World Premiere of “Superman: Red Son” on Monday, February 24, 2020 at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood. This episode takes your hosts, Grim Shea, Marke and Jimmy the Gent, back to a more innocent time, when people met in shared places, shook hands, watched a movie together and talked face to face. Oh the good old days comrade!

Dollars and Sense | Part 3 - Choice
2 Corinthians 9:6-8

Big idea: You can give and not be generous, but you can’t be generous and not give.

2 Corinthians 9:6-8
Remember this—a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop. You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.”

2 Corinthians 9:10-11
For God is the one who provides seed for the farmer and then bread to eat. In the same way, he will provide and increase your resources and then produce a great harvest of generosity in you. Yes, you will be enriched in every way so that you can always be generous.

Generosity does two things:
1. It changes what’s in our HANDS
2. It changes what’s in our HEARTS
3 Ways the Bible Teaches We Can Be Generous With Our Money

1. Helping

2. Giving (Special Offerings)

3. Tithing

Malachi 3:10
Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test!

Dollars & Sense | Part 2 - Blessing by Pastor Jason Isaacs

Part 2: Blessing Mark 6:35-44

Big idea: Blessed is better than my best.

Definition of Blessing - God's favor and protection.

Ephesians 1:3
All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ.

Mark 6:35-44
Late in the afternoon his disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away so they can go to the nearby farms and villages and buy something to eat.” But Jesus said, “You feed them.”“With what?” they asked. “We’d have to work for months to earn enough money to buy food for all these people!” “How much bread do you have?” he asked. “Go and find out.” They came back and reported, “We have five loaves of bread and two fish.” Then Jesus told the disciples to have the people sit down in groups on the green grass. So they sat down in groups of fifty or a hundred. Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and blessed them. Then, breaking the loaves into pieces, he kept giving the bread to the disciples so they could distribute it to the people. He also divided the fish for everyone to share. They all ate as much as they wanted, and afterward, the disciples picked up twelve baskets of leftover bread and fish. A total of 5,000 men and their families were fed.

"God will let a lot of money pass through your hands if you don’t let it stick to your fingers!” -Ike Reighard

Group Discussion Questions
1.What did you grow up believing about blessing?
2. Do you have a story of supernatural blessing?.
