Tess Gerritsen, author of "The Surgeon" featuring Rizzoli & Isles (2015)

The National Writers Series Podcast

September 1st is the publish date of "The Surgeon" in 2001. It's perhaps better known as the very first novel featuring detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Maura Isles, who are now famously the lead characters in the long-running show "Rizzoli & Isles" on TNT.  Since it's the 20th anniversary of that book's release, we thought we'd revisit our chat with the author: Tess Gerritsen. Gerritsen joined the NWS for a conversation in January 2015 that ranged from her mother's love of horror movies to her career in medicine to the first novels she wrote in the romance genre before turning to thrillers. Our guest host for this episode of the NWS podcast is Kerrey Woughter.--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nationalwritersseries/message

Tess Gerritsen, Gary Braver - CHOOSE ME

Welcome to Author Provocateur with Josie Brown

In the novel, CHOOSE ME, prolific authors Tess Gerritsen and Gary Braver have collaborated on a thriller that introduces Frankie Loomis, a tough-as-nails police detective whose investigation of a college student’s fatal plunge from a balcony is so finely layered with possible suspects that it will keep you guessing until the end if it was suicide or a murder. Tess and Gary discuss why they enjoyed the collaboration; why it was great to see how each approached dialogue—both the men’s and women’s—from each other’s points of view; and why they chose to make Frankie a woman of a certain age. We also discuss two very important issues specific to authors: when using a pen name works well; and why the laws that protect Intellectual Property need to be strengthened, especially in circumstances when novels are adapted to movies or television.
