#232: Treasured with Courtney DeFeo

Mom Struggling Well

Raising daughters is amazing/overwhelming. Today we are focusing on pre-teen girls but we also touch on the general wellness that all of us mothers are trying to maintain over here. In Courtney’s experience, our girls turn a corner around first and second grade - when things aren’t just about cool tutus and everyone being friends. Courtney is really passionate about this time in life, so with her girls, she tackles 6 subjects: identity, friendship, body, emotions, and technology in a fun and interactive way. Courtney DeFeo is most known for being a factory of ideas for families. It’s her desire to lead a life that radiates God’s love in action and His grace along the way. As a former marketing professional for Chick-fil-A, Courtney has a history of creating memorable programs and ideas that motivate others to action. She is the author of In This House, We Will Giggle, creator of ABC Scripture Cards and the kindness movement Light ‘Em Up Acts. Recently, Courtney launched a new study in collaboration with Parent Cue entitled Treasured designed for tween girls and their moms. Courtney’s most honorable mention is her husband Ron and their two wildly creative girls (Ella, 13 and Larson, 10). WHAT WE CHAT ABOUT: how Courtney’s faith has been tested while living away from her family sacrificing for your spouse without holding resentment not feeling well due to neglecting self needs where to start when you’re trying to get well not letting your children’s emotions pull down your emotional state helping your pre-teen/teen girl navigate emotions how finding a community and being vulnerable unites us Courtney’s passion for teaching 9-12 year-old-girls LINKS MENTIONED: Treasured Journal: An Interactive Experience for a Tween Girl & Her Mom Treasured Podcast Down Dog Yoga app CONNECT WITH COURTNEY: website | instagram | facebook CONNECT WITH EMILY: website | instagram | facebook | patreon EPISODE SPONSORS: Beekeepers Naturals: get 15% off your 1st order when you visit beekeepersnaturals.com/msw and use promo code MSW Embr Wave: get $60 off your Embr Wave bracelet when you visit embrwave.com/msw YogaSleep: get 20% off a sound machine when you visit yogasleep.com/msw Abide app: get 25% off a premium subscription when you visit abide.co/msw SUPPORT THE SHOW: Patreon  SHARE THE STRUGGLE! Thriving Beyond Belief with Cheryl Scruggs

The Thriving Beyond Belief podcast this week featuring: Courtney DeFeo! The “tween” years are a critical transition period in the life of a young girl. Girls this age are changing in profound ways. Loaded with fun activities and engaging content, Treasured will initiate meaningful conversation between moms and daughters during these critical preteen years. ABOUT THE TREASURED STUDY Whether you lead a group of moms and daughters or complete this study one-on-one with your daughter, we equip you digitally with everything you need: This 6-session faith-based study is designed to connect moms and daughters with engaging content around topics critical to the preteen years: Identity, Body, Emotions, Friendships, Technology, and Faith. It contains a flash drive of digital files that includes everything you need for a small group study with moms and daughters: teaching videos (DVD option included), discussion questions, leader guides, participant guides, and connection ideas and more. This can also be used as a one-on-one study with a mom and her daughter. To be used on its own, or in conjunction with the Treasured Study, the Treasured Journal is designed to help girls think about the questions they are already asking, and creates opportunities to interact with their moms. There are 6 weeks of topics (the same topics as the study) with 5 days of things for her to think about, doodle, and do. There are things for moms to do, too. Go through it together, and you’ll discover a deeper connection with each other, and in the process, she’ll discover just how Treasured she is. When used alongside the study, it allows moms and daughters to take what they’ve learned in the study one step further.

I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.” Ephesians 2:8–10 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God‘s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.“ Ephesians 2:13 “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.“ Philippians 1:6 “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Episode 201: Courtney DeFeo | Raising Tween Girls

Surviving Sarah

I am so happy to welcome Courtney DeFeo back to the show. Courtney is an OG Surviving Sarah guest making her first appearance on the show back on episode 18. She is such a creative entrepreneur who has a big heart for helping others. She is an author and podcast host for the Treasured Podcast which is a great resource for moms of girls. Courtney has partnered with Parent Cue from Orange to create a resource for moms and tween girls so that is the basis for our conversation today. We talk about raising tween girls, the areas in which we feel inadequate to help, and even the area that we struggled with as tweens. And since we are in the throws of the holiday season, we talk about ways to make the holidays less about what we receive and more about what we give. Courtney shares some very practical and helpful ideas to light up your community during this holiday season. Connect with Sarah: Instagram // Website Support Surviving Sarah on Pateron
