TME 116-Peter Berry: Chest Out, Head Up, Push Through
The Mindset Experience
At the age of 9, Peter Berry’s family was involved in a car accident that killed both his parents, injured his 5 year old sister and left both he and his brother paralyzed from the waist down. Despite losing his parents and use of his lower body, he used his innate optimistic mindset and physical drive to focus on what he could do. Since then, he has redefined what family means, is thriving and continuing the legacy of his parents. His drive, determination and follow through on commitment have earned him a full scholarship for wheelchair basketball at University of Alabama and a spot on Team USA. Despite the repeated challenges in his life, Peter utilizes the life lessons he has learned to provide inspiration and hope for anyone who might need it. @p_dawg31

REPLAY: Peter Berry and Deb Bunt Untangle How to Live Well With Dementia
AlzAuthors: Untangling Alzheimer's & Dementia
This podcast is a replay of one that appeared last year with our friends Peter Berry and Deb Bunt. They’ve written a new book, a volume of poetry, musings, that Peter sent to Deb via text messages at the end of long days living with dementia. She transcribed his words and lovingly put them in a book called Walk With Me: Musings Through The Dementia Fog. Its pages are exquisitely illustrated with the work of Daniel Ruffles, a talented friend and photographer who captures the beauty of the Suffolk landscape and coastal areas where Peter and Deb live. In celebration of this vital new addition to dementia literature, we're replaying their podcast interview. After the podcast, you can read more about the book on our website, AlzAuthors.com. Enjoy! About Peter and Deb Peter Berry was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s at age 50 and took an early retirement from his job working in the family’s timber business. After the devastating diagnosis, he became depressed but, being a ‘glass half full’ personality, battled through his depression and focused on his lifelong passion for cycling. He has used this passion to raise awareness of the condition, particularly in younger people. Peter’s whole philosophy is to live well with dementia and to inspire others to do the same. He maintains an active lifestyle due to his love of cycling, which keeps him fit both below and above the eyebrows, he says. He rides a penny farthing, a single speed bike, a road bike, and a 1950's Claud Butler, although not all at the same time – he’s good, but not that good, he jokes. Along with his friend Deb Bunt, Peter cycles nearly every day. Their travels throughout Suffolk, England have led them to have many serious heart-to-hearts about his disease, which Deb put together in a book called Slow Puncture: Living Well with Dementia. “It's a book about me,” Peter says, “but a book I have never read and never will read as my short-term memory means I have forgotten the previous sentence as soon as I have started a new one.” In this episode we discuss the difficulties encountered with a dementia diagnosis at age 50, the financial pressures he’s had to overcome, and how cycling has made life with COVID tolerable. Peter Berry & Deb Bunt (Every Small Step 2021)
Dementia Carers Count
Peter was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in early 2015 aged 50. He lives in Saxmundham, Suffolk with his wife Teresa. He records a weekly video diary detailing his experiences and sharing advice for others about living with young onset dementia. After his diagnosis, Peter became very depressed but, being a ‘glass half full’ personality, has battled through this depression and focused on his main passion for cycling. He has used this passion to raise awareness of the condition, particularly in younger people. Deb is Peter’s best friend. They go cycling together every day and their friendship has enabled Peter to continue cycling when he might otherwise have had to stop. Last year Deb published Slow Puncture: Living Well With Dementia, this book is an account of a year in the life of Peter Berry. When Peter meets Deb, recently retired, they embark on regular cycle rides and, as their friendship grows, Deb is able to look at her own life through the lens of Peter’s dementia. In Slow Puncture, Peter tells the world what it is really like to live with a terminal condition and Deb learns to enjoy each day more fully. #EverySmallStep2021 http://www.dementiacarers.org.uk/event

AlzAuthors: Untangling Alzheimer's & Dementia
AlzAuthors has again partnered with HFC, (Hilarity for Charity) to present a Summer Book Series for Alzheimer’s and dementia families and caregivers. Each month one of our authors meets with readers and caregivers online to discuss their book. The authors talk about their own dementia journeys and why they chose to write about them. They also answer questions from the attendees. It’s a wonderful way to learn more about dementia and caregiving. Peter Berry kicked off the first in our series on June 8th. Peter’s book, “Slow Puncture: Living Well with Dementia,” was written by his friend, Deb Bunt. Peter and Deb both participated in the book club, and it is a lively discussion. Peter discussed the deep depression that engulfed him after his diagnosis and shared how he managed to not only climb out of it but learned how to live well with dementia, and to inspire others to do the same. He is an important voice in dementia world and one can learn a lot from him about positive living. Peter Berry and Deb Bunt
Well I Know Now with Pippa Kelly
Peter Berry and Deb Bunt met by chance – through the spin of the wheel one might say – in Sax Velo, a cycling shop in Suffolk in 2018. Deb (together with husband Martin) had recently retired and moved to the market town of Saxmundham. Peter, a Suffolk man through and through, took over his father’s timber business; for him the trees and woods of his county are as familiar as old friends and family. Peter is also a keen cyclist and, aged just 50, he was diagnosed with dementia. Deb knew no one in her new neighbourhood. And very little about dementia, other than holding the common and mistaken belief that it only came with old age, liver spots and false teeth. Peter, slim, fit, and living with Alzheimer’s when she meets him, not only blows apart this myth but offers to show her some local cycling routes. And so an unlikely friendship begins. Like all the best friendships it’s mutually reciprocal, hugely rewarding for both, and based on trust. It’s been captured in a remarkable book, brilliantly entitled Slow Puncture. It tells of their year together and in doing so, lays bare Peter Berry’s tumultuous Alzheimer’s journey in his words. So they are co-authors but it is Deb Bunt who has written it. Peter simply can’t. What’s more he will never read it. He will never, in fact, read his own story. The more the pair cycle together over the months, the more the trust builds between them and the more Deb learns, not just about Peter and his dementia monster, his ways of coping and his hidden demons, but about herself. Peter shows her the joys to be found in living in the moment and of celebrating the journey for what it is even if you lose your way and end up, as it were, in Orford instead of Framlingham. “It is perhaps a cruel paradox that Peter’s dementia, which is chipping away at his world and shrinking it, has created a whole new world for me,” Deb says. While, in his inimitable way, Peter tells her that while the condition’s taken so much from him – his income, his self-esteem, his future, he has taken a lot from it. “I live every day; I enjoy every day even if I might forget it moments later. They say you only live once, but that’s rubbish: you only die once. You live every day. And that’s what I fully intend to do”.
