Vicki and Geraldine talk to John Carr, writer, campaigner and adviser to charities and governments, about whether the UK is finally about to see laws to stop children accessing online pornography.Talking points: Why has the government been so slow about stopping children accessing pornography online? Is the Online Safety Bill going to protect children effectively? Is proposed end-to-end encryption of major messaging services going to hide child sexual exploitation and abuse?
Will age verification really work? Skeptic questions John Carr
John Carr, OBE, is a globally recognized expert on child safety; he is working towards implementing age verification legislation in the UK aimed at protecting children from exposure to online pornography. My friend Alexander is skeptical that age verification for pornography websites can really be effective. In this episode, Alexander raises his concerns and tough questions and John Carr responds. Questions discussed include: With millions of porn websites currently existing and hundreds more popping up every day, how can governments hope to monitor all these sites for compliance? Is it a valid argument to say that since age verification works for online gambling sites, it can work for porn sites? What would have the biggest impact: requiring porn websites to age verify users, or requiring search engines to age-gate pornographic content? John is a project manager with ARTC currently delivering the Inland Rail project, specifically the North Star to Border segment which is a once in a generation cross border civil infrastructure project comprising of brownfield, greenfield and major floodplain crossings.John starts by telling us about his background as a civil engineer, his passion for managing projects that solve problems and give him fulfilment including some examples of those projects before telling us what a Smart Community is to him. We then dive into Inland Rail and John gives us an overview of the project, some of the challenges he has faced and gives us examples of how some of the regional communities have begun to plan for and invest in Inland Rail. We then discuss what intermodal terminals are, their purpose and the desire that Inland Rail will increase the efficiency of freight through these types of terminals.John then shares with us some examples of the digital models and data collection methods being used to deliver the project and their advantages, before discussing how community and stakeholder engagement has been navigated throughout the project and the advantages of the empirical to analytical data collection loop to show the community relatable data. We finish our chat discussing more about the emerging trend of the empirical to analytical data collection loop, how important this skill set is to teach to young emerging engineers and the emergence of a more personable engineer. How to Network and Create Long-Lasting Relationships - with John Carr
Lead Sell Grow - The Human Experience
Eric Konovalov and Harry Spaight are joined by a true networking champion champion joins us on this podcast, How to Network and Create Long-Lasting Relationships - with John Carr. John has been networking successfully many years and shares his insight. Networking in Chambers of Commerce and networking groups needs to be strategic and intentional. It is about finding people with a giver's mindset and developing relationships with these folks. Some mistakenly think they need to collect a ton of business cards and give out just as many. That does not result in anything of value. far better is it to have two good conversations with Givers and start building trust with each other. As John points out, once one starts to get referrals, business can be much better. There is already a measure of trust established based on the referral. However, there is still work to do after the introduction. Be a Giver and think of having 1-2 conversations at each event. Before long, you will build up a nice network of people helping each other.John can be found linkedin.com/in/john-carr-1430508 firstname.lastname@example.org
