Dante Basco: From Rufio to Zuko and Important Life Lessons Learned

Inquire Within with IN-Q

Welcome to Inquire Within with me IN-Q, a poetry podcast that brings you on a journey to the center of your soul through the lens of myself and some the greatest poets and artists of our time.   In this episode, I am joined by the talented Dante Basco.   Dante is most known for his role as Rufio, the leader of the Lost Boys in Steven Spielberg's Hook, and for his voice acting role as Prince Zuko from Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender. He’s also the author of Rufio to Zuko, where he outlines how his family and culture played a crucial role in the foundation of his work and his focus for the future. Because of Dante’s stand-out roles, he has become an important role model in the Asian-American community. Plus, Dante is the founder of Da Poetry Lounge…(explain what it is, I’m not sure exactly).   In this episode, we dive into the major adversities Dante has faced being an Asian American actor and how he was able to overcome them, as well as his work as a poet, his process, and how he’s using it break through the adversities minorities face.    And as always, with every episode, we will be sharing a journaling question inspired by the conversation to encourage and inspire you to inquire within, so be sure to listen to the full episode to not miss out.

Get it here: https://amzn.to/31Uo9OAt the beginning of today’s conversation, Dante mentioned a film we worked on together a few years ago, but we never came back to discuss it. So here’s a quick summary:In 2017, Dante and I worked together on a feature film project, The Head Thieves. It starred Dante & Dion Basco and EP Mickey Gooch, and I was a producer with Director/Writer Mike Hermosa. We had an amazing cast and crew and the experience was extraordinary. A fun fact is that every crew member on location had a cameo in the movie. We even created a music video starring the entire cast and crew and friends. The film won six festival awards, including two for Best Feature Film. ▶︎ CONNECT with us and SUBSCRIBE now so you don't miss a thing:@DanteBasco@JayMenezTVABOUT Hollywood Real with Jay Menez:Insightful conversations with the most fascinating people in entertainment and sports.▶︎ SUBSCRIBE at HollywoodReal.com for more celebrity interviews and exclusive content.

Episode 07: Dante Basco...An Actor’s Journey (Part Two)

The Flip Chronicles

Rufio. Yes, that Rufio from “Hook”. When I first saw that movie, I knew that kid who played that role had to be Pinoy. Then it was confirmed, he was Pinoy. Dante Basco burst into our psyches with that unforgettable role in that Steven Spielberg movie with Robin Williams, my own comedy hero. How jealous was I that this kid from Pittsburg CA got to be in a movie with the comedy legend I most admired. He went on to star in so many other Hollywood films working alongside other greats and become synonymous with Fil-Am cinema with his role in “The Debut” and in the early days of spoken word. If you’re a fan of the animated fantasy series, “Avatar: The Last Airbender” he voices Prince Zuko! These days, Dante is handling the reins as a producer and director in the Asian American filmmaking scene, look out for the upcoming “The Fabulous Filipino Brothers”, starring his own brothers who are stars in their own right. This is part one of my interview with Dante Basco, he definitely deserves a longer talk with you all. Enjoy.
