S3:E8: Steven Smith | Reclaiming Patriotism in an Age of Extremes

Keeping It Civil

Steven Smith is a political philosopher at Yale. His most recent book, “Reclaiming Patriotism in an Age of Extremes,” makes the case that patriotism should be restored as a guiding civic value. In discussing his book, Josh and Henry cover his notion of “enlightened patriotism,” the necessity of teaching patriotism in schools, and the challenge of balancing patriotism and cosmopolitanism. They also discuss the crucial distinction Smith draws between patriotism and nationalism.

Weird Islanders: The Podcast! - Episode 11 - Valtteri Filppula (with guest Steven Smith)

Lighthouse Hockey: for New York Islanders fans

They talk about the comical contract signed on a day of high tension among Islanders fans and how Filppula found instant chemistry with another newcomer, Leo Komarov, on a team that was more successful than any fan ever dreamed it would be. They also recap a couple of highlight reel goals that show that the center was more than just the bad underlying numbers he had two years prior. But then the biggest plot twist imaginable happened when Filppula left to return to his original team and the Islanders had to scramble to replace a guy who had arrived in a flash. Of course, no tribute to “Weird Frans” would be complete without a discussion of the beloved Islander he most closely resembled on the ice, and how they formed a friendship after they both left the team.Visit our friends: Vintage Ice Hockey for t-shirts, hoodies and mugs with hundreds of classic hockey logos, and our Al Arbour shirts which benefit dementia research. Filmmaker Steven Smith has “Long Covid.”  I know Steven from his collaboration on films that have been at the Sherman Oaks Film Festival and Film Invasion Los Angeles.  He expressed to his frequent collaborator and two-time DIF podcast guest Hayden Croft that he’d like to share his Long Covid experience publicly.  When Hayden asked me about it, I had no hesitation allowing Steven to use the DIF podcast as a platform to tell his story. That explains why this podcast is a little different for Discover Indie Film.  But you can learn a lot from it. You should follow Steven at his Instagram @stevenshotit.  You can contact him there as well to express support or ask questions.
