Episode 156: Part 3 of Our Conversation with Running Icon, Bart Yasso

Run Eat Drink Podcast

RUN  This week, we share part 3 of our talk with Bart Yasso.  He is known as the Mayor of Running and Chief Running Officer at Runner’s World until his retirement in 2017. This week, he talks about key things to focus on and takes our patrons’ questions!   Thank you, Bart, for your “wit, wisdom, and insights!” Find out more and connect with Bart Yasso here: Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/Bart-Yasso-118295040323/ Twitter:  https://twitter.com/bartyasso?lang=en Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/bartyasso/ Website:  http://www.bartyasso.com EAT This week we share a local spot in heart of downtown Fort Myers called The Standard.  We ate brunch there and it did not disappoint!  The restaurant was a flurry of activity when we arrived with karaoke in full swing.  They do take reservations, which we would strongly advise, but there happened to be an opening right away, so we took it!  The bar was stocked with local and well-known brews plus bottomless mimosas and bloody marys for $20 to go with the meal.  We started with the jalapeño and sausage corn muffins.  They were tender and flaky with a breakfast sausage flavor and just a hint of spice.    Dana had “The Hangover” breakfast sandwich and it was full of breakfast meats, eggs, and cheese on a soft brioche bun.  Aimee had the “Short Rib Hash,” which was one of several hash dishes that looked mouth-watering as they came out of the kitchen.   The Standard does not skimp on the tender meat in the hash, the potatoes were seasoned perfectly and the over-easy eggs had a perfect runny yolk a-top this perfect-sized skillet.   If you come to the Fort Myers area, check out The Standard for the entertainment and the tasty dishes.  We can’t wait to go back and try their regular menu, too!   DRINK  This week, we got the chance to attend a Coffee Connoisseur Tasting and Certification at the Luminary Hotel in Fort Myers.  Ulli Winckler is the master roaster for Dean St. Coffee Roastery at the Luminary Hotel and preseident of Rebel Coffee in Cape Coral.    We got a special behind the scenes look at what it takes to roast coffee and tasted 12 different varieties of coffee.  We break down what we learned this week.   THAT’S A WRAP! - Here’s hoping you are off to a great year in 2021! Bloody Mary Fans:  Don’t forget...Collin and Annie from Sunday’s Bloody Mary Mix are offering a special discount code to our Runcation Nation!  RED20 will get you 20% off your order on sundaysbloodymary.com.    Try it spicy or try the Vegan mix and let us know how you like it!  Thank you to Collin and Annie discount.   Thanks to all our patrons, we have been able to expand our studio and keep the show going over the last year.   We can’t express how much it means to us.  We hope all our Insiders enjoy the Insider Exclusives we published over the weekend!   If you’d like some extra content, swag, and insider exclusives, check out patreon.com/runeatdrinkpodcast and become a patron of the show today!   Thank you for listening! Episode 155: Part 2 of Our Conversation with Running Icon, Bart Yasso

Run Eat Drink Podcast

RUN  This week, we share part 2 of our talk with Bart Yasso.  He is known as the Mayor of Running and Chief Running Officer at Runner’s World until his retirement in 2017. This week, he talks about the Yasso 800s, runners who inspire him, and virtual races.  Thank you, Bart, for your “wit, wisdom, and insights!” Find out more and connect with Bart Yasso here: Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/Bart-Yasso-118295040323/ Twitter:  https://twitter.com/bartyasso?lang=en Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/bartyasso/ Website:  http://www.bartyasso.com EAT This has been a rough winter for many of our running friends.  When it comes to getting out there for a run in the freezing cold, there is nothing better than a recipe that warms the soul to celebrate that accomplishment.  A great Irish comfort food that we love is Shepard’s Pie.  There is a great place in Disney Springs we have featured on the show before, Raglan Road, that has a delectable and meaty version of this dish. We have featured one of our favorite cookbooks, The Healthspan Solution, on past episodes, including chatting with authors Ray Cronise and Julieanna Hever on Episodes 108 and 109 last year.   This week we made the Shepherdess Pie from the book.  We review it on this episode and talk about what made it so hearty and satisfying as a Vegetarian dish.   You can get the Kindle or hardcover book at our Amazon affiliate links below.  It does not cost anything additional to purchase the book through the links we list, but it does help support the show. The Healthspan Solution Kindle Edition:  https://amzn.to/3r15Xhx The Healthspan Solution Hardcover Edition:  https://amzn.to/2ObqgtV DRINK  We talked about a couple of favorite holiday drinks that warm the soul back on Episode 88 of our show.  Mulled wine is one we typically make each year for Thanksgiving and Christmas to share with the family.   It can help you celebrate a live race you’ve run this winter or help you warm up after a run in particularly harsh winter conditions.   We linked to a recipe online, but did not share our own recipe in that particular episode. This week, we feature our own recipe with an option that provides for reduced sugar. Ingredients (Serves 6-8 cups of wine) 1 - 750 ml bottles of a favorite red wine ( we selected a barrel-aged Cabernet Sauvignon  2 oranges- zest and juice of one and the other sliced in rounds to use for garnish 8 whole cloves  4 cinnamon sticks  2 whole nutmegs *Normally a cup of sugar and a cup of water are added to sweeten the recipe. To make a more healthful version, you can leave this out and drink it without sweetening or use agave nectar or honey to taste with each serving.   Directions Pour wine into the instant pot or crock pot. Add the zest of the orange.  Squeeze the juice of the orange into the wine and add the whole orange into the pot.  Cook on low for two hours.  Pour into mugs, stir in agave nectar or honey to sweeten, if desired, with a garnish of an orange slice and enjoy! This week, we were so happy to hear that Josh Ozbirn decided to go from a Founder to an Insider of our show.  Plus, we welcome a brand new Insider, Joanne Blatchley, or as we like to call her, Jojo!  Thank you to Josh and to Jojo for their continued support as patrons of the show at the highest level. We used our instant pot to create this version.  It makes approximately 8 servings. Here is our recipe: Ingredients: White Potatoes Diced - 6 potatoes Water - 8 Cups Dry Garbanzo Beans - 1-lb Package White Onion Diced - 1 whole onion Diced Carrots - 4 whole Diced Celery - 4 stalks Diced Jalapeño  - 1 Whole Minced Garlic - 6 Cloves Smoked Paprika - 2 Tablespoons Liquid Aminos - 4 Tablespoons Chopped Fresh Kale - Half of a 16-ounce bag Directions: Combine all ingredients except kale in the instant pot.  Set the instant pot on high and cook for one hour.  Release valve and depressurize instant pot.  Add kale.  Turn back on low for 20 minutes.  Then divide equally among 8 bowls and enjoy.  Or divide among containers to store for the week for lunch or dinner.   DRINK  Monday, February 22nd, was National Margarita Day. So, we share our own Pineapple Jalapeños Margarita recipe to honor this day!   Ingredients (Serves 2) Silver Tequila - 2 ounces  Cointreau -  1 ounce Pineapple Juice - 2 ounces  Lime Juice - 1 ounce Sliced Fresh Jalapeños - 4 (2 are for muddling and 2 are for garnish) Sliced Lime Wedges - 2 for garnish  Jalapeño Simple Syrup (1 cup sugar, 1 cup water, 1 additional jalapeño halved from those listed above) Directions Make Jalapeño Simple Syrup prior to mixing drink by bringing 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water to a boil on high heat.  Remove from heat and add jalapeño.  Allow to steep in mixture for a few minutes before preparing remainder of ingredients. Combine all the rest of the ingredients in a shaker with ice and 1 ounce of the Jalapeño Simple Syrup.  Shake for a few seconds and strain into two different glasses over ice.  Serve with lime wedge. THAT’S A WRAP! Here’s hoping you are off to a great year in 2021! #245 - Bart Yasso

The Rambling Runner Podcast

When I grow up I want to be Bart Yasso. It is an honor to welcome Bart to the podcast. He has been a hero of mine for a long time and this is a conversation I will never forget. The epitome of the dedicated amateur runner, Bart retired from Runner’s World at the end of 2017 after 30 years with the magazine. He served as Chief Running Officer for the last 10 years of his career - a title he richly deserved as helped spread and chronicle people's love of running wherever he went.  In this conversation we talk about how running has evolved in recent years, it's effect on runners of all levels, the evolution/revolution of women competing in the marathon after the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984, and so much more.  Sponsors: Previnex is a supplement brand that I trust, use, and have greatly benefited from. #RunChat: An Interview with Running Legend Bart Yasso

#RunChat: A podcast built by runners for runners

Bart Yasso, the former chief running officer of Runners World magazine, is one of the easiest people to talk to about running. He's full of fantastic stories and wonderful advice. Bart has had a major influence on the #RunChat community as well, inviting founders David and Scott to the first-ever Runner's World Festival in Pennsylvania to discuss social media's impact on the sport. #RunChat co-founder David talks with Bart for about 40 minutes on a wide-range of topics from his first race decades ago to running on a relay team for the Blue Ridge Marathon. We also talk about the coronavirus impact on the sport and what future races may look like ... and much more!
