Trent Dalton’s dazzling debut, Boy Swallows Universe, became the fastest selling Australian fiction debut ever, selling over half a million copies in Australia alone. His highly anticipated follow up, All Our Shimmering Skies, is set in Darwin in 1942 and is a sweeping mythological odyssey of love and adventure, magical and masterfully imaginative, populated by a Dickensian cast of finely drawn colourful characters, led by gravedigger’s daughter Molly Hook, a tenacious spirit as full of heart and hope as the novel she inhabits. In this episode I workshop Trent Dalton's highly anticipated second novel, All Our Shimmering Skies, with my clever editor friend Julie Collard. Both Jules and I enjoyed this book - it is a true sensory experience. It centres on the story of big hearted, motherless Molly Hook, a gravedigger's daughter, and her quest to not only navigate her toxic father and uncle but get to the bottom of a curse that she believes Aboriginal elder Longcoat Bob placed on her family. It is an odyssey of big love and big danger that is simultaneously about darkness and light. But I assure you, it will leave you feeling inspired and hopeful. If you love big blockbuster stories, historical fiction and fairytales, then you'll love this book. Check out the show notes on the website here for more info. Thanks so much for being part of our book club! Alex xx

'All our Shimmering Skies' is the much-anticipated follow-up novel from one of Australia's newest literary stars, Trent Dalton. Released in September earlier this year by HarperCollins, Trent's new book takes us away from the surburban setting of "Boy Swallows Universe" and catapults us into Australia's Top End - where some of Australia's harshest and most interesting landscape is on show. A beautiful story of courage and hope that I believe all Australians should read.I was absolutely gob-smacked by the opportunity to speak with this incredibly gifted story-teller recently.Laugh along with Trent and I as we chat about his phenomenal success, pesky fire alarms, his long-steeping inspiration for Molly Hook's story, the screen adaptation for "Boy Swallows Universe" and so much more.
