5. How to go Everesting with Phil Gaimon

Cyclist Magazine Podcast

Welcome back to Episode 5 of the Cyclist Magazine Podcast.Since lockdown stopped bike racing back in March, it seems like every man, woman and their dog have turned their hand to Everesting, the slightly insidious challenge of riding hill repeats on an individual climb, in one continuous ride until you hit 8,848m of vertical elevation. We called up former WorldTour pro turned YouTuber, author, Strava King of the Mountain getter and former Everesting world record holder Phil Gaimon to discuss how hard it actually is, what the perfect climb for an Everesting record attempt would look like and whether it is actually possible for us mere mortals. James and Joe then discuss some of the hardest rides and sportives they have ever done (all of which are much, much harder than Everesting). James discusses the time he retraced Stage 2 of the 1903 Tour de France, a 374km epic from Lyon to Marseille, while Joe talks about how riding the Paris-Roubaix Challenge left him with swollen fingers for a week.Joe also mentions the Bergkonnig Vintage Festival in Switzerland. You can read more about that here - https://www.cyclist.co.uk/in-depth/6400/keeping-it-wool-at-the-bergk-nig-vintage-sportiveAnd if you want to read Joe's review of the Katusha Light rain jacket, that can be found here, too -https://www.cyclist.co.uk/reviews/8388/katusha-light-rain-jacket-reviewFor more on the Cyclist Magazine Podcast - https://www.cyclist.co.uk/cyclistmagazinepodcastSubscribe to Cyclist Magazine now - https://cyclistmag.co.uk/cyclistmagazinepodcast See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Coffee and Van Chats

DISCLAIMER: Please understand this podcast was shot 2 weeks before Lachlan Morton would go on a shatter the Everest Record.  Welcome back to my channel and podcast. On this episode of Coffee and Van Chat - I sit down in my van and chat with ex world tour pro/ strava KOM hunter and my short lived teammate Phil Gaimon. I have watched Phil as I entered the sport of cycling and then I heard he was possibly going to join us on the track. Unfortunately Phil would gone on to have a horrible crash and miss out on our 2019 World Cup campaign chasing the 2020 Olympic Games which we would fall short of.   Phil and I chat about racing in TTown (Trexlertown), the Everest record, BBQ in Nashville and much more! Phil has an extensive pro cycling back ground which has brought him great success today!   Again - sit back, relax and enjoy!  Phil is known for his series worst retirement ever and his YouTube Channel and his series Phil Gaimon Worst Retirement ever can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqI9HyfLvodz7bXFCI3PU2g--- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/coffeeandvanchats/support

Tech Podcast: Phil Gaimon knows why you should pay for Strava

VeloNews Podcasts

On this episode of the VeloNews Tech Podcast, retired pro cyclist Phil Gaimon joins tech editor Dan Cavallari to talk about how Strava has turned into an important tool in Gaimon's post-racing life. Gaimon recounts how he first started using Strava as a way to stay fit and have fun, and how it morphed into something that helped him define a sense of purpose, particularly regarding some of the charitable fundraising he does.Gaimon also chats about his Everesting record, which lasted a few days before he was unseated by Keegan Swenson. Most importantly, Gaimon reminds us all that while Strava is a powerful tool worth spending our money on, it's important to remember the fun part of it all — it's just riding bikes, and that's ultimately what should put a smile on our faces.

Phil Gaimon, cyclist

The Adventure Stache

Phil Gaimon is a former World Tour road cyclist who rode for Garmin-Sharp and Cannondale-Drapac among others. While racing, he blogged for VeloNews, Bicycling, ESPN, and Sports Illustrated and wrote the popular book Pro Cycling on $10 a Day (2014).  He retired at age 30, expecting to hang up his race bike and put on some cookie-weight. He continued writing (Draft Animals (2017)), but through a series of unexpected twists, launched his wildly successful YouTube show “Worst Retirement Ever,” which follows his pursuit of breaking hill climb records all over the world. In this conversation, Phil and Payson discuss his decision to quit pro cycling early, how he got his start on YouTube after a marketing job fell through, stealing STRAVA KOM’s from dopers, racing Fabian Cancellara for charity after an internet spat, and how he became the final authority on cookie ratings on Instagram.

Phil Gaimon - the 2020 Olympics, a Big Wreck, Broken Bones & Raising $100,000 for No Kid Hungry

Choose the Hard Way

Phil Gaimon is an ex-pro cyclist and the creator of the wildly popular YouTube cycling series, The Worst Retirement Ever. He previously joined me for episode 5 where he talked about his transformation from an overweight kid into one of the best pro cyclists in America and his evolution as a creator and entrepreneur. Phil is the author of two memoirs, a creative force and had planned to spend this summer on a cross-country tour to use his YouTube series to raise money for the No Kid Hungry charity. Then he had the opportunity to qualify for the 2020 USA Cycling Olympic track team and decided to pursue that goal, too. A month into his van tour, a track race at the velodrome in Trexlertown, Pennsylvania went sideways and Phil had a horrible wreck that put him in the hospital for a week with broken bones and a collapsed lung. Only a month out from the wreck, Phil joined me for this conversation to discuss what happened, how he is physically and emotionally processing the injury and how he used it as a chance to amplify his efforts to help No Kid Hungry.  You can donate to his No Kid Hungry drive here. Check out the new business Phil launched during his recovery at www.icelegs.com. You can find him on Twitter & Insta @philgaimon, at www.philthethrill.net, and on Strava.com/athletes/philgaimon. During this episode, we talk about several bicycle track racing events. You can see a video of a points race here and a team pursuit race here. And check out Phil’s video about his attempt to qualify for the Olympic team here.  If you enjoy this episode, please get a friend to listen to it, too, and take a second to rate the show and leave a review. You can find more about the show at www.choosethehardway.com and you can get in touch with feedback, questions or what have you on Twitter or Insta @hardwaypod, or send an email to choosethehardway@gmail.com.
