Simon Calder - The God Cast interview

The God Cast

Simon Calder owes his love of travel to his parents, Nigel and Liz – and in particular their decision to move to Crawley, a new town in Sussex. He was born beside the A23 on Christmas Day, 1955. By the time he was six, he realised that there was likely to be more to life than this. Fortunately, that summer he joined the Crawley branch of the Woodcraft Folk (woodcraft.org.uk). They promptly organised a camping trip to the Lake District, and Simon was hooked. In this interview we discus, Covid 19 and the future of travel, spiritual places to visit and his love of hitch hiking.

Will free tube travel save London from coronavirus fears? & Simon Calder on airport quarantine rules

The Leader | Evening Standard daily

The Evening Standard's learned millions of people could get free rides into London under bold plans to fight the slump caused by coronavirus. Free tickets for trains, buses and the Tube are being discussed as a radical way of getting the public to see for themselves that it is safe to go back to offices and to enjoy shops, restaurants, museums and galleries. The story was broken by our political editor Joe Murphy who says government and businesses are backing it, but they still have to work out which side's going to pay for it. Also, even Transport Secretary Grant Shapps thinks airport quarantine rules are confusing after some parts of the UK added Portugal and parts of Greece to their 'red lists' while England didn't. Meanwhile, with people abandoning their holidays the travel industry's being bit with another blow as Virgin Airlines announces 1,150 job losses. Travel journalist Simon Calder tells us the situation is a shambles, and predicts the entire system will be scrapped within a week. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Robert Jenrick & Richard Desmond: is a "smoking gun" still to be found? & travel journalist Simon Calder on the rumoured new holiday rules

The Leader | Evening Standard daily

A trove of documents, emails and text messages that was supposed to clear Robert Jenrick of allegations he did billionaire Richard Desmond a favour over a planning decision has done anything but. Questions are being raised about the Housing Secretary’s relationship with the businessman, who was complaining about “Marxists” plotting against his plans to build 1,500 homes at Westferry in East London. The Evening Standard's political editor Joe Murphy joins the podcast to talk about new documents he's seen covering the affair. Also, holiday operators are reporting a sudden surge in bookings for Mediterranean villas offering “privacy and space” following reports that air bridges to leading European destinations will be available from next week. A scramble to save a peak summer season worth up to £20 billion is under way ahead of an expected formal announcement on Monday that the much criticised quarantine rules for travellers returning to Britain will start to be eased. Travel journalist Simon Calder, though, says it's too little too late. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
