The Stan Freberg Show - Sixth Show In CBS Series - Aug 18,1957 - Comedy Radio

Play
Read more
This was the sixth show of the CBS Stan Freberg series that ran for 15 episodes from July 14 to October 20th 1957. Despite its short run the program featured some running gags and stock jokes...including a lot of Freberg's ambivalence toward Madison Avenue with many fake advertisements that made fun of some of the show's possible sponsors. The result was that by the 13th episode the show suffered from a lack of advertising interest. Two cigarette companies offered to sponsor the series, but Freberg turned them down. As a result, no sponsors so CBS cancelled the series after 15 episodes. It was the last network radio show to devote itself purely to comedy. In 1958 "The Best of the Stan Freberg Shows, a recording of collected material from the show, won the first 1959 Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album. For 15 fabulous weeks in 1957, Stan Freberg brought his signature satirical style to radio in one of the last original comedies of the era. Freberg and his immensely talented cast skewered pop culture and presented zany characters that were unlike anything radio had presented before. We'll hear the first two episodes of this too short-lived series, originally aired on CBS on July 14 and July 21, 1957.

That's Rich - Starring Stan Freberg - Rich Meets Freckles - Nov. 21, 1953 - Sitcom

This is the CBS Radio Audition Show of Stan Freberg's sitcom entitled "That's Rich" airing on November 21, 1953. Show only lasted until midway through 1954 with about a dozen shows preserved. Track includes background about the series. Do not be mistaken that the short run of the program in any way minimizes the creativity of the stories and the amazing portrayal of Rich Wilk that Stan Freberg did as the lead character. This show never failed to entertain in a quirky sort of way because it was so different from anything else on the air. However fewer and fewer people were listening to radio by 1954 and had turned their attention to the amazing "radio with pictures" known as television. "That's Rich" is considered by many critics of the time as a "Classic" example of the Golden Days of Radio. Thank you for listening... and find more of Stan Freberg in the playlist by the same name on this podcast.

The Stan Freberg Show - CBS Series - Rocket Sled - Sept. 29, 1957- Comedy

Play
Read more
Only 15 episodes of the last network radio comedy series were aired before CBS cancelled the show in October of 1957. The incredible talent of Stan Freberg and his regular cast members that included Daws Butler, June Foray, and Peter Leeds , with Billy May handling the music direction created routines and unique comedy, running gags, that the audience loved, but sponsors of the show did not appreciate as Freberg often went after Madison Avenue types. The show lasted about 4 months and then shut down. Fortunately we have great transcriptions of the shows and the humor is as funny today as it was then. Stan Freberg was a multi-talented man with immense creativity. Enjoy this 12th Show in the CBS series with the lead sit "The Rocket Sled" Also heard in Stan's version of the hit song "Shaboom, Shaboom"... thanks for listening.
