(Originally aired in April 2021) Richard Carroll is a Sydney based director, writer and producer.  One of the co-founders of the Hayes Theatre, his 2017 production of Calamity Jane  won him a Sydney Theatre Award for Best Production of an Independent Musical, and a nomination as Best Director.  His directing and producing credits also include Monty Python’s Spamalot, Oklahoma!, Gypsy, Sweet Charity, Mame, and Meet Me in St Louis. In 2019, his season of Once at the Darlinghurst Theatre Company was a sold out success, and is now making a return to Darlinghurst’s Eternity Playhouse from the 8th of June before embarking on a national tour.

His showbiz participation had consisted of school productions and writing questions for Quiz programs in the UK. Casting and production experiences in television followed, providing him with essential skills to navigate the creative roles of writer, producer and director.Carroll is one of Australia’s leading proponents of the Musical and is a founding member of The Hayes Theatre Company in Sydney; an organisation dedicated to the celebration and preservation of the musical and cabaret forms.His impressive list of credits as Producer or Writer include Everybody Loves Lucy, Julie Madly Deeply, Darlinghurst Nights, High Society and Sweet Charity - the production that alerted the industry that something special was happening at The Hayes.As a Director, his highly successful production of Calamity Jane, starring Virginia Gay, played throughout Australia, delighting audiences with a new look at an old favourite.Other shows seeing Carroll at the helm include Spamalot, Gypsy, An Act of God, Once and Sideshow; an array of product exploring classical Broadway fare and contemporary works.In November he directs the iconic Oklahoma for The Black Swan Theatre Company in Perth. In only a few short years Richard has established himself as one of the most creative and innovative directors on the Australia theatre scene.Excitingly, Richard, in association with the Darlinghurst Theatre Company, is bringing award-winning musical "Once" to the stage, beginning it's run in late June."Once" began its life as an Irish movie, written and directed by John Carney, in 2007 starring modern-day Irish folk hero, Glen Hansard, and Marketa Irglova. The story of two struggling musicians in Dublin who fall in love while following their passion for music, took the world by storm.
