Lisa Bentley is a legend of Iron-distance racing. 11 time champion, she won Ironman Australia 5 times, Canada three times, New Zealand twice and Ironman Germany, as well as finishing in the top 10 in Kona six times, including a third place finish in 2006. All of this is remarkable enough before you consider that Lisa was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, a disease of the lungs causing repeated chest infections and requiring her to be on antibiotics for up to three months every year. Her story is one of not just hard work and dedication, but also of a positive mental attitude that rivals anything you’ll ever have heard. Lisa is now a team captain for the Internationals in the Collins Cup, selecting the athletes that will race head to head when the race takes place in 2021.

#88 — Run the mile you’re in w/ Lisa Bentley

Lisa Bentley is a speaker, author, and 11-time IRONMAN champion. She is one of the most decorated Canadian triathletes, and has remained heavily involved in sport since her retirement from professional competition in 2010. Lisa is known for her contagious smile, and describes how she found joy in the hard stuff; “I’m not saying racing was an easy thing. But at the core of it, I loved what I did. I would get to the start-line, or wake up on race-day and say to myself, there is nothing else I would rather be doing”

Lisa and Steph riff on how Lisa has stayed involved in the sport she loves during retirement, and how the lessons she learned as a professional athlete translate into her life today. For as long as she can remember, it was ingrained in Lisa not to quit. She attributes this lesson to much of her success in sport, but also acknowledges that she has had to learn to be kinder to herself, loving herself enough to sometimes let herself off the hook. She hopes to see people love triathlon as much as she does, and hopes that people don’t lose their joy in becoming too regimented. Lisa gave Steph the advice years ago to “Run the mile you’re in”, and both Steph and Lisa find this lesson to hold true in all aspects and stages of life.

#36. Lisa Bentley on An Unlikely Champion

Welcome back!

Today we're going to revisit an interview with Lisa Bentley that I posted on my previous podcast.

Although she is primarily regarded as one of the best Ironman athletes in the world, Lisa spent the first eight years of her triathlon career racing Olympic distance and representing Canada on several national elite teams at the World Championships and the 1995 Pan Am Games. In 1997, Lisa switched her focus to the Ironman distance, winning her first long distance event, Strongman Japan, and breaking the course record by 19 minutes. She placed ninth in her first Ironman World Championships, beginning a progressive rank improvement that culminated in a third place win at the 26 Ironman World Championships. Over the course of her career she has won eleven Ironmans and sixteen 70.3 Half Ironman distances, and achieved several top five finishes at Ironman World Championships. She had at least one Ironman victory for each year from 2000-2007 and was ranked among the top five triathletes in the world for over a decade.

Lisa competed at the highest level in Ironman despite having cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease resulting in chronic infections and limited lung capacity. Lisa came to see CF as a blessing, fuelling her passion for sport and excellence. Every race gave families hope that their children with CF could achieve similar things in life.

Since she retired from pro sport in 2009, Lisa has been doing marathons, doing motivational speaking, providing television commentary for CTV Olympic Swim coverage, and CBC triathlon and Sportsnet Ironman coverage. She coaches and does sales and marketing work for other triathletes and triathlon events. She is also an advocate for CF, women in sport, and equality in sport.

I'm honoured to have her on the show. Her new book is out called “An Unlikely Champion: Finding a path to fulfillment and winning in life”. She is an amazing human being and you are going to absolutely love this interview.

#072: Lisa Bentley: Why Attitude is More Important Than Fact

“Attitude is more important than fact” might seem like one of those weary and overused motivational slogans.

But Lisa Bentley lives it every day.

A member of the Triathlon Canada Hall of Fame, Lisa is an 11 time Ironman triathlon champion, including 5 straight victories at Ironman Australia (2002 - 2006).

She also has cystic fibrosis - a genetic lung disease that results in chronic infections with limited lung capacity.

Lisa was diagnosed in 1989 at the age of 20, when the average life expectancy for those with cystic fibrosis in Canada, was also 20.

The facts would suggest Lisa was never meant to excel at endurance sports.

She’s the first to admit she wasn’t the most talented athlete around, especially given her limited lung capacity.

But it was Lisa’s approach to the mental and emotional side of sport -- and her attitude -- that set her apart.

We dive into her story and the tools she used to build that mental fitness in this conversation.
