The Joe Wicks Podcast

The UK’s favourite fitness coach is back with series two of his podcast. This summer, Joe will be speaking to inspirational friends and some of his favourite people to ask them what they do to keep themselves feeling mentally and physically strong in the face of life’s little challenges. It might be going for a new personal best on the running machine or cosying up with a good book; every guest will share the one thing that works for them in the hope it might inspire you to try something new.In this episode Joe speaks to ultra-athlete and writer Mirna Valerio. A former schoolteacher, she teaches on social justice and anti-racism.Mirna joins the call from her home in Montpelier, Vermont, where she moved to be closer to the mountain trails where she loves to train. She shares her story with Joe from the health scare which prompted her to get back on her tread mill, to running 100-mile trails. She describes encounters with bears and internet trolls while out running in the forest, and how she loves nothing more than curling up with a good book to relax and unwind. This is sunshine in a podcast. Fresh Take: Mirna Valerio Tells Us How To Find Our Fitness

What Fresh Hell: Laughing in the Face of Motherhood

Mirna Valerio is a runner, adventurer, speaker, and anti-racism educator. In this Fresh Take interview, Mirna tells us how she fell off the fitness wagon after becoming a mom, how that first mile went once she made herself lace up her running shoes again, and her path to becoming an endurance athlete since then. Even if we’re not all cut out to run 100 kilometers in the desert– or even want to– Mirna tells us why fitness is worth it, and how to reacquaint ourselves with fitness, no matter how long we’ve been out of the game. “I believe in having the long view. Look, I'm still a big girl. I’m going to be a big girl. But my long view, my overarching goal, is long-term health and wellness. What am I doing to put long-term health and wellness in the bank for later? What am I doing today to ensure that I have long-term health and wellness?”We also discuss how we, as women, are entitled to name what we need– and how that well-timed help, especially when we ask for it, is the very thing that will allow us to get back up and keep running.Acknowledge how you're feeling. Breaking Boundaries in Sports with Mirna Valerio, Imposter Syndrome and Sexism in the Media

Just Between Us

Gaby and Allison give a listener advice about battling imposter syndrome in the male-dominated field of quantitative finance. They then have a delightful discussion with Allison’s former middle school music teacher Mirna Valerio, who has since become a FAMOUS RUNNER due to her blog Fat Girl Running. Lastly, sexism in the media. How are female politicians, celebrities and astronauts treated differently? Also, we released this early because of the election. Oof. Good luck, America! 125. Mirna Valerio, Runner, Speaker & Author

In 2008, Mirna Valerio thought she had a heart attack. It actually turned out to be an anxiety attack behind the wheel of her car — something she never thought would happen to her. At the time, her cardiologist told her that if she didn't make some major lifestyle changes, she wouldn't be around long enough to watch her son grow up. Fast forward to today, she's an avid marathoner and ultramarathoner, known to her rapid social media following as "the Mirnavator." For episode 125, we chat about everything from her backstory to what it was like running both her first 5K and the Javelina 100. We also talk about navigating injury and adjusting expectations, what it's like to be a sponsored athlete when your body is your business, and the profound impact her community has left on her life. Mirna's positivity for life is contagious.
