Live Interview - Matthew Benjamin with Sebastian Bates: Pivoting Towards Sustainability
Round Pegs Square Holes Podcast
In this talk, Matthew will discuss how, having spent the past 10 years working in bespoke menswear, the last 3 running his own business with sustainability being a big driver, he decided to take this into school uniforms where the potential for positive impact is so much bigger. At the moment uniforms have a huge environmental impact and aren't good for the kids wearing them, and he’s decided to make a change in that system. Covid isn't just about pivoting, it is about pivoting to business models that are going to help solve the climate crisis that we face, and he plans to take us through the steps of how his business did just that. Matthew Benjamin was born and raised in London. His father is from Guyana, and although his mother was born in the UK, her parents are from Jamaica. With a dad hailing from the Caribbean, he grew up playing cricket and the Windies are his team. He studied Advertising in the UK before going to study an MBA in Luxury Management at the International University of Monaco. His career started in London, working for the largest custom clothing company in the world, Tom James, which led him to come to Dubai, to open and run an office for them, becoming one of the youngest in the history of the company to do so. In 2017 he started Benjamin Siggers, a bespoke menswear business with sustainability at its core. As his passion for sustainability grew, so did his ambition to make more of an impact, which has resulted in him starting Kapes.

We’re back for a very special episode of the Finish More Music Podcast, where this week I’m delighted to be joined once again by Matthew Benjamin, (AKA Bushwacka!), and his partner Belinda Matwali. I’ve got them on the show because I heard about their brand new concept which harnesses the joint power of therapy and meditation to help creatives overcome the challenges holding them back, and live more empowered and energetic lives. I’ve talked to the power of therapy and meditation here on the show MANY times before, so I was super intrigued to find out what it was all about… And if you’re wondering what any of this has got to do with finishing more music - well, it has EVERYTHING to do with it. Because the core principles that Matthew and Belinda teach and are now sharing with the world are principles that can be applied to anyone, but especially beneficial to creative types.
15. Matthew Benjamin speaks about Climate Crisis awareness to empower children to be more connected to the things they wear and buy, the people that make these things, the places they are made, and the impact that this has environmentally and socially
Matthew BenjaminFounder of KapesMatthew Benjamin is the British founder of Kapes, a UAE born sustainable school uniforms brand, catering to schools globally. Having spent the last 3 years building and running sustainable bespoke menswear tailor, Benjamin Siggers, his desire to have a positive impact on a larger scale grew. Learning all he could about the impact that manufacturing clothing has on the earth, Matthew decided to take his learnings into developing sustainable school uniforms. Armed with the tools and knowledge acquired from Benjamin Siggers, and prior to this, while launching and managing an office for Tom James, the world’s largest custom clothing company, Matthew is now able to further develop his passion for finding sustainable solutions within textiles and adapt this to school uniforms through his work with Kapes. Through Kapes, Matthew hopes to play an integral role in empowering children to become change-makers, using Kapes as a tool to educate children about sustainability, encouraging them to be more connected to the things they buy, those who make them, and the places they are made. As these children become adults, they will inevitably be more conscious consumers, educating the generations to come through setting an example. By creating a new standard in the school uniforms market for quality, sustainability, and transparency, Matthew hopes to make a difference and disrupt the market. In this special episode we talk to CEO & Founder of Kapes: Matthew Benjamin alongside our very own Seb Francis who is also a Co Founder of Kapes. See the Episode on youtube here: https://youtu.be/SfCS2NNZTfQ "If you want a business that's going to be thriving in 20 ,30, 40, 50 years from now, then you got too, from a logical point of view, get sustainability in there from the start"! As you can see this episode is slightly different for two reasons. One, it's our first face to face interview as both founders are now based in Dubai. Two, Seb has invested in this company and is also the Co Founder working alongside the other Co Founders Matthew Benjamin and Michael Bennett. We learn in this episode all about Kapes and it's CEO Matthew and we see why Seb was attracted to the investment opportunity. Kapes is the world's most sustainable school uniform company. This is their WHY: "Kapes was born from wanting to find a way to fight the climate crisis and revolutionise the school uniform market at the same time. We place sustainability at the heart of everything we do, to help give a brighter future to as many children as possible. That’s also why for every uniform sold, we give a free one to a child in need. This helps children stay in school, giving them a better chance to rise out of poverty. And by teaching Kapes kids about how their clothes are made and how the people who make them are treated, we hope to influence a new generation of conscious consumers. But perhaps best of all, they can see how the simple act of wearing their Kapes uniform is already helping the planet and other kids all around the world." Matt is the CEO and founder of Kapes. He has been working in the clothing and textiles industry since 2010, starting out with Tom James (the world's largest custom clothing company) before launching sustainable menswear tailor Benjamin Siggers in 2017. In founding Kapes, Matt has combined his expertise for finding sustainable textile solutions with his natural passion for helping the next generation. He strongly believes in educating children to be more connected to the clothes they wear, the people who make them and the places they are made. Originally from London, he has resided in the UAE since 2012. Matt is an avid sports lover and a big fan of the West Indies cricket team. Kapes also gives back! They are passionate about helping all children fulfil their potential, so they can grow up to become the future change makers the world really needs. That's why Kapes gives away a free school uniform for every one they sell.
