May 23, 1910 is the birthday of the late Artie Shaw. To celebrate his birthday I have put together a show from a CD set that I have. In 1945, Artie appeared on the Victory Parade of Spotlight Bands five times. This set has all five shows on it. I really like this set because, in addition to a superb band, the sound is really good. So on part one we'll be hearing the first two shows with many of your Shaw favorites. I hope you enjoy this set as we wish Artie a happy 110th birthday. S5E2: One For My Baby (and One More For The Road) | Johnny Carson & Mickey Rooney and Ava Gardner and Artie Shaw

For our second dive into the Ocean's Eleven: 12 Degrees of Frank Sinatra season, Stacie has the Rat Pack-adjacent comedian and original King of Late Night, Johnny Carson. He was a private person who was possibly America's most beloved and public figure for three decades. His three divorces – and final, apparently happy marriage, reveal the split-screen that was his life.

Then, Alicia has the tragic early years of Ava Gardner: her rural North Carolina upbringing, her discovery by the MGM star machine, and her first marriages, to Mickey Rooney and Artie Shaw. It's all prelude to her final, tumultuous marriage to Sinatra, which is coming up later this season.

Classic Artie Shaw Bluebird and Victor Sessions Part 2

I am continuing this week with part two of Classic Artie Shaw Bluebird and Victor Sessions which has selected cuts from the Mosaic Record Company's eight disc set of the same name. The sound quality is great and most of these songs are from Artie's classic years. All of the songs on the show are instrumentals as that was how Mosaic elected to produce the set. I hope to have a couple of shows in the future highlighting many of the Big Band vocalists. Please visit this podcast at http://bigbandbashfm.blogspot.com

Classic Artie Shaw Bluebird and Victor Sessions Part 1

In 2011 I bought two 8 disc sets from the Mosaic Record Company. The first was dedicated to the Columbia sides of Benny Goodman which I presented a show on a few weeks ago. The second is what our show today is about. This disc set featured the classic Bluebird recordings of Artie Shaw. For all the vocal fan listeners I have to apologize as this set only focus on the instrumentals. But what a collection of instrumentals. We start from the year of 1938 and Artie's great recording of Cole Porter's "Begin the Beguine" and continue from there. Many of the arrangements are by Artie himself or Jerry Gray. This is a great set that is, unfortunately, not for sale anymore. I hope you enjoy part 1 of " The Classic Artie Shaw Bluebird and Victor Sessions." An Artie Shaw Birthday Salute

Play
Read more
Artie Shaw was born on May 23, 1910. He was an American clarinetist, composer, bandleader, and actor. Also an author, Shaw wrote both fiction and non-fiction. Widely regarded as "one of jazz's finest clarinetists, Shaw led one of the United States' most popular big bands in the late 1930s through the early 1940s. As I do every year I would like to remember Artie on his birthday but instead of playing many of his hits I am going to be playing some of his recordings that feature the many different vocalists that sang with his band. Starting way back in 1936 with Peg La Centra and going to the mid 1940's we'll hear a lot of different singers. If you want to listen to some of Artie's hits, the show I did last year is still available. I hope you enjoy this potpourri of vocalists as we remember Artie Shaw on his birthday.
