103: Dr. Cate Shanahan - Why Vegetable Oils are at the Root of Serious Health Conditions

Dr. Cate Shanahan, a board-certified family physician who specializes in reversing chronic diseases and best-selling author, comes back on the show to dive deeper into how these eight vegetable oils are destroying our health.

In this episode, Dr. Shanahan goes on to suggest that the negative outcomes coming from the Coronavirus pandemic could have been avoided had we eliminated vegetable oils from our diets five years ago.

Not only that, Dr. Shanahan shows that other health conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, could also be radically eliminated or improved simply from removing vegetable oils from our diets.

Dr. Shanahan shares why you’ll want to remove these harmful oils, how to do this, and some other helpful steps you can take starting today.

She also dives into other topics such as why your fat is an essential organ, the benefits of switching to a regenerative agriculture style of farming, and how you can improve your metabolic health.

You’ll also discover how to assess your current metabolic health and why you may be healthy on the outside yet you’re experiencing a metabolic storm internally (and what you can do to fix this).

On top of being a physician and author, Dr. Shanahan also works with Dr. Tim DiFrancesco and Gary Vitti to create a PRO Nutrition program for the LA Lakers. In doing this, she was shocked to learn that some of the Lakers had poor metabolic health despite being in great shape.

Tune into the episode now to see why that is and how you can improve your health starting today!

TMHS 420: The Fatburn Fix & Our Growing Susceptibility To Viral Infections - With Dr. Cate Shanahan

What do you think of when you hear the term body fat? If you’re like most Americans, you probably think of body fat as a cosmetic issue. But the truth is, our body fat is a critical part in our health, including hormone regulation, immune function, and metabolic processes.

In our chronically overweight society, many people have an overabundance of body fat—but struggle to actually burn it off. There’s a huge misconception that this is a willpower deficiency, but in reality, a metabolic problem is a serious biochemical imbalance. Luckily, it’s one that can be corrected with a few simple and straightforward shifts.

In her new book, The Fatburn Fix, Dr. Cate Shanahan shares how an overabundance of vegetable oils in the Standard American Diet leads to the inability to burn body fat. On this episode of the Model Health Show, Dr. Cate is back to share about the biochemistry of highly refined oils, how the human metabolism runs most efficiently, and how simple swaps in your diet can make you a better fat burner. Enjoy!

In this episode you’ll discover:

  • What the best exercise you can do is.
  • How to make your body crave exercise.
  • Why body fat is the number one determinant of our health.
  • How your body’s metabolism works.
  • Why the idea of metabolism speed is a misconception.
  • How the makeup of human body fat has changed over time.
  • The problem with highly refined seed oils.
  • What PUFAs are.
  • Why the percentage of polyunsaturated fatty acid in your body fat matters.
  • The three biggest food sources of processed oils.
  • How inflammation and body fat are interconnected.
  • The link between vegetable oils and COVID-19 effects.
  • Why canola oil is more common than olive oil.
  • How your body fat controls your temperament.
  • The two different types of sugar addiction.
  • How processed oils are made.

Think You Know Good Fats from Bad? 8 Oils to Avoid – Dr. Cate Shanahan with Dave Asprey : 713

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, I’ve invited Dr. Cate Shanahan back to the show to talk about good fats and bad fats. She’s going to explain what’s happening with our fat cells and why the kind of fat you consume matters so much to your metabolic health.

Trained in biochemistry and genetics, Dr. Cate has spent nearly two decades working as a physician and nutrition specialist. Her newest book, The Fatburn Fix: Boost Energy, End Hunger, and Lose Weight by Using Body Fat for Fuel, will take you on a uniquely informed nutrition journey focused on your own fat and the fats you consume.

Dr. Cate created previously developed a nutrition program for the LA Lakers that many NBA and professional sports teams adopted and still use today. She’s been featured on a documentary and docuseries and been interviewed by major media outlets, radio talk shows and popular podcasts.

She’s also the author of two previous books devoted to nutrition: Deep Nutrition: Why Your Genes Need Traditional Food and Food Rules: A Doctor’s Guide to Healthy Eating.

“We've been living in this giant experiment because we've started eating fats that we know are great for seeds instead of fats that are great for animals,” Dr. Cate says. “That's a huge experiment. Anybody who says I'm promoting a fad diet, no. This is the opposite of the fad diet. It's the antidote to this experimental fad diet that we've been on.”

Dr. Cate says the kind of fat that’s in our own bodies is the root of inflammation. She then offers up four of the best things you can do nutritionally to boost your own immunity and beat inflammation.

During this pandemic, you have to be aware of any inflammation in your body. If you’re living on sugar and bad oils, well, that’s just what coronavirus thrives on, she says. While many parts of the world are slowing returning to a new normal, Covid-19 hasn’t gone away. Dr. Cate and I also talk about how certain types of fats make people more susceptible to viruses and infections, and give you tips on how to stay healthy.

Part 86 - Cate Shanahan, MD on Unlocking Your Body’s Fat Burning Potential, Sinister Seed Oils, and Corona Thoughts

Hey, hey! How’s everyone doing? We’re living in some strange times. I really hope we find a way to end racism in the US and the world and I hope justice is served for that horrible police officer. I’m here in LA and just tried to go to the post office and found that it was closed and storefronts in the Venice / Marina Del Rey area were being boarded up. We all got messages to our phones saying a curfew would be enforced at 5pm. My friend got beat up in Santa Monica for trying to stop looters. I don’t know why he was trying to do this, but it looked pretty scary. Violence is not the answer. I hope everyone stays safe and we make some changes in our society towards true equality.

Today we have Dr. Cate Shanahan back on the show. There’s a few great people who have made it on twice. Dr. Ted Naiman, Ivor Cummins, Dr. Paul Saladino, and I'm talking to Dr. Bill Schindler again tomorrow. Please go back and catch these awesome repeat guests, as well as all the other great episodes in the back catalogue.

For those who don’t know of Dr. Cate she was just on Bill Maher’s show Real Time where she talked about ancestral nutrition, avoiding seed oils, running on fat, and staying healthy as the number one goal during the time of coronavirus. It was such a treat to hear someone from our health community make it to the mainstream. Bill seemed to support her message 100% and didn’t even start with his plant-heavy leaning ideas. I was just so excited to see her spreading these messages I wanted to have her back on. I also have been reading her new book The Fatburn Fix and am thoroughly enjoying it. She goes into a lot of interesting details of her new information in this episode.
