David Wise, Video Game Soundtrack Composer, Discusses Technology & Limitations
PlusMusic Podcast - Conversations with musicians, for musicians
David Wise didn't set out to become a video game composer, but his knowledge of synthesizers garnered the attention of Rare Limited in the 1980s, who hired him on the spot. Since then he has had a long and lucrative career in the gaming industry, where he is known for his beautiful and atmospheric scores - particularly on Nintendo's Donkey Kong Country series. Wise discusses his origins, his process, and the huge technological advancements in digital audio, as well as the surreal experiences of hearing his music sampled by famous rappers like Drake and Childish Gambino. Check out his work here.

David is struggling with connecting to people, he feels like there’s something wrong with the engagement side and why he is not generating more clients. Tina makes him realise that it’s not reaching out and connecting to people that's having him put on his brakes, it’s actually the feeling of not being, having or doing enough - which is common in today’s consumerist culture. In this episode you will hear: How to be confident and happy within your own skin Engaging with people by being authentic Why credibility is so important in coaching Denial as a defence mechanism Common mistakes life coaches make For more information on High-Performing Coach's latest workshops and events head to highperforming.coach/events
Ep. 23: Working on Donkey Kong Country and Dinosaur Planet with Kev Bayliss & David Wise
Video Game History Hour
You and Diddy better jump inside that explosive barrel and get tossed into this minecart because we are going on a trip! This week we’re playing co-op with TWO guests at the same time. We meant to have artist Kev Bayliss and composer (not music engineer) David Wise join us to reminisce about Dinosaur Planet, as Kev did in his editorial “I was a lead on Dinosaur Planet and this week’s leak brought back great memories.” However, things went truly off the rails and we ended up looking back at their time working on not only Dinosaur Planet, later Star Fox Adventures, but also Donkey Kong Country, Diddy Kong Racing, Battletoads, Wheel of Fortune, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Killer Instinct and we’re just not sorry at all. Spoiler Alert: there may be a Dragonheart spoiler ahead.
