How Bob Crane Left His Mark in Radio

TV Confidential

TVC 499.1: Ed plays Part 2 of a three-part conversation with Carol Ford and Linda Groundwater, two of the co-authors (along with Dee Young) of Bob Crane: The Definitive Biography, a comprehensive, cradle-to-grave look at the life and career of the beloved Hogan’s Heroes star whose accomplishments in television and radio are often overshadowed by the brutal nature of his unsolved murder on June 29, 1978 and the tabloid-like coverage of his addiction to sex and porn once that became public knowledge after his death. This week, we look back on Crane’s radio career, from its unlikely start on WLEA in Hornell, Connecticut to his nine-year run (1956-1965) as host and star of the top-rated morning show on KNX Radio in Los Angeles. Crane not only made radio a spectator sport, but pioneered many elements of radio production that remain industry standard today.Bob Crane: The Definitive Biography includes first-hand insight from more than two hundred people who knew Bob Crane personally and better than most: family members; his friends from Connecticut, including many who knew him as far back as grade school; his colleagues from TV, the theatre, the movies, and, above all, radio; and the addiction counselor whose help Crane sought in an effort to overcome his addiction, in the weeks before he was killed.Want to advertise/sponsor our show?TV Confidential has partnered with AdvertiseCast to handle advertising/sponsorship requests for the podcast edition of our program. BOB CRANE - ROBERT CRANE JR

House of Mystery Radio on NBC

On June 29, 1978, Bob Crane, known to Hogan's Heroes fans as Colonel Hogan, was discovered brutally murdered in his Scottsdale, Arizona, apartment. His eldest son, Robert Crane, was called to the crime scene. In this poignant memoir, Robert Crane discusses that terrible day and how he has lived with the unsolved murder of his father. But this storyline is just one thread in his tale of growing up in Los Angeles, his struggles to reconcile the good and sordid sides of his celebrity father, and his own fascinating life.Crane began his career writing for Oui magazine and spent many years interviewing celebrities for Playboy -- stars such as Chevy Chase, Bruce Dern, Joan Rivers, and even Koko the signing gorilla. As a result of a raucous encounter with the cast of Canada's SCTV, he found himself shelving his notepad and tape recorder to enter the employ of John Candy -- first as an on-again, off-again publicist; then as a full-time assistant, confidant, screenwriter, and producer; and finally as one of Candy's pallbearers.Through disappointment, loss, and heartbreak, Crane's humor and perseverance shine. Beyond the big stars and behind-the-scenes revelations, this riveting account of death, survival, and renewal in the shadow of the Hollywood sign makes a profound statement about the desire for love and permanence in a life where those things continually slip away. By turns shocking and uplifting, Crane is an unforgettable and deeply human story.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. Hollywood Case File #20 - The Murder of Bob Crane

Mystery on the Rocks

Wholesome 1960s sitcom star Bob Crane was murdered in 1978 in Arizona, beaten by an unknown object and found in his apartment with a cord wrapped around his neck. Who could have wanted one of the affable stars of Hogan's Heroes dead? The subsequent investigation yielded no results but a wealth of suspects and blew Crane's loveable family guy image completely apart. At the Mystery on the Rocks bar you’ll find a retired sleuth, the bartender trying to settle his tab, and the down-on-her-luck lounge singer, solving mysteries and drinking cocktails. Each week a new guest enters the bar and attempts to solve an unsolved mystery alongside the regulars. Hosted by Masud Milas, Chris Stokes, and Sooz Kempner. It’s a high concept comedy and true crime podcast, set in a fictional crime-solving bar (with real cocktails!). The focus of the show is to attempt to crack a real, unsolved mystery from history – true crime and bizarre occurrences, all with a whodunnit or WTF happened question hanging over them. Masud makes the drinks, Chris tells the mystery and Sooz sings and plays live piano – and everyone chats and chimes in with their theories. You can follow us on Twitter and Instagram too!Produced by Chris Stokes, Masud Milas and Sooz Kempner.See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The 1978 Murder of Hogan's Heroes Star Bob Crane w/ John Hook - A True Crime History Podcast

Most Notorious! A True Crime History Podcast

By June of 1978, the once massively popular television star Bob Crane (of Hogan's Heroes fame) was relegated to doing dinner theater in Scottsdale, Arizona. In between shows, he and hanger-on John Carpenter spent much of their time trying to pick up women, and Bob would use the latest video technology to film his sexual exploits. When Bob was discovered bludgeoned to death in his apartment on the morning of June 29th, Carpenter almost immediately became the police's primary murder suspect. My guest, John Hook, is an investigative reporter and award-winning Phoenix news anchor who in 2016 began a quest to have the cold case's remaining blood evidence tested for DNA. He writes about his investigation in his book "Who Killed Bob Crane? The Final Close-Up", and shares some of the details with me on this episode of Most Notorious.Become a Most Notorious patron at: www.patreon.com/mostnotorious
