Thurgood Marshall and the Machinery of Death

Dissed

In 1972, the Supreme Court ruled that capital punishment was being “so wantonly and so freakishly imposed” that it was “cruel and unusual in the same way that being struck by lightning is cruel and unusual.” But just four years later, the Court reversed course---ruling that with new procedures in place, states could continue executions without running afoul of the Eighth Amendment. Justice Thurgood Marshall wrote an impassioned dissent arguing that the death penalty is cruel and unusual under any circumstances. After hearing his experiences as a defense attorney in the South, it’s easy to understand why. Thanks to our guests John Stinneford and Mark Tushnet.Follow us on Twitter @anastasia_esq @ehslattery @pacificlegal #DissedPod See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Thurgood Marshall - COURAGE - S2 E20

Eagle Hoss & Hound

On May 17, 1954 the Supreme Court delivered its decision on Brown v. Board of Education, striking down segregation in schools! Thurgood Marshall successfully argued that case and in fact, out of 32 civil rights cases he argued at the Supreme Court, he won 29 of them!  Marshall grew up in the segregated U.S. South (Baltimore, MD) and became one of the most prominent lawyers in America during the 20th Century.  "Mr. Civil Rights" led the NAACP as Chief Counsel bringing as many as 450 civil rights cases per year through the courts until 1961 when he was selected by President John F. Kennedy as a judge for the Federal Court of Appeals.  Later, he was appointed by LBJ as U.S. Soliciter General and in 1967 joined the U.S. Supreme Court as the first African American justice.  Thurgood's amazing courage to face down the hatred and threats brought on him personally from Jim Crow supporters to fight for the civil rights of all Americans, including African Americans, makes him a social integrity hero and HOSS indeed! The Eagle Hoss & Hound podcast is a platform for respect. Respect for the Eagle - the individual with a service background (including spouses). Respect for the Hoss - the Social Integrity Hero from our American past. Plus, the Hound - the common #AmericanMutt - you and me. Follow @EagleIMBUED - J.D. Collier
