#186 Carl Stoveland and Shannon Torrence: A Month of Art on a Tropical Island

The Left Brain Artist

For today’s episode, I’m having a follow-up conversation with artists Shannon Torrence and Carl Stoveland. I first spoke with Shannon and Carl about two months ago in Episode 176. They told me about their upcoming month-long artist residency at Dry Tortugas National Park, which is 70 miles west of Key West, Florida. On Loggerhead Key, Shannon would be painting with acrylics and Carl would be taking photographs, videos, and painting watercolors. They were taken out there by boat with everything they needed for a month: paints, paper, easel, cameras and film, and of course, their clothing and food. If you haven’t listened to Episode 176 yet, I suggest you go back and listen to that first. They told me how they applied for this artist residency through the National Parks Arts Foundation, and that they planned to make a documentary film of this residency. Their final product is changing a little bit, as you’ll hear in today’s episode, as a result of what they saw during their time on the island. But they’ve returned with many paintings, photos, and film footage, and they’re excited to share their experiences with us. Here they are talking about their month together at Dry Tortugas National Park, on the 64 acre island called Loggerhead Key. #176 Carl Stoveland and Shannon Torrence: An Artist Residency on the Dry Tortugas

The Left Brain Artist

The artists Carl Stoveland and Shannon Torrence are from Lake Worth Beach, Florida. In 2 weeks, they’ll be leaving for a month at the Dry Tortugas National Park, which is west of the Florida Keys, for an artist residency through the National Parks Arts Foundation. Carl is a photographer and he also does watercolors. Shannon is a landscape artist who works with acrylics. They’ll be bringing their art supplies, as well as everything else they’ll need to live for a month on a deserted island. They’ll be off the grid while they’re there, but they’ll be very busy making art and working on their residency project, a documentary film about their time on the island. We talk about how they were awarded this residency, and what their plans are for their month on an island. I will be interviewing them again in October when they return from this residency. IAMLAKEWORTH - Shannon Torrence recorded 01/16/2019

I AM LAKE WORTH Photography Project

This week's podcast is a live recording at Hatch1121 in Lake Worth with one of the subjects in the IAMLAKEWORTH Too! exhibit.  This week I chose to interview painter Shannon  Torrence.  He has quickly become one of my favorite characters in the tapestry of Lake Worth.  I just adore his paintings and I am sure when you see them you will too.  Our interview ranges across a mutual affinity for Lake Worth to a detailed chat about Shannon's painting process and how he got to be painting what he does here at this moment in time.   Shannon's solo show at the Palm Beach Cultural Council in downtown Lake Worth will open  April 1st 3-5pm  and runs for the month of April 2019.  This is a show not to be missed.  If you love Lake Worth and are drawn to its natural beauty this exhibit is for you.  Come out and support original art created right here in Lake Worth. Next Week I will be interviewing Joyce Greenberg Brown for the podcast.  It will be a fascinating conversation with another of Lake Worth's gems.  If you would like to be in the audience for the interview join us at HATCH1121 (1121 Lucerne Ave) at 7pm on Thursday 1/24/19.  It is almost guaranteed that the topic of Pete Seeger and his connection to the people of Lake Worth will come up. IAMLAKEWORTH! Carl
