You might not realize it, but Angela Santomero is more than likely a seminal figure to your kids. She's the 30 time Emmy nominated producer behind Nickelodeon's Blue's Clues and creator of Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, not to mention PBS's Super Why, Amazon's Wishenpoof and Netflix's Charlie's Colorforms City. Needless to say Angela has created, developed, and executive produced numerous children's series all from her study of child development and psychology. Her new book is titled, Radical Kindness: The Life-Changing Power of Giving and Receiving. She is married and has two daughters.

Angela tells Daphne and Hilaria about creating programming for children that focuses on education and emotional learning. She discusses how teaching children through television is an ongoing process that evolves. Her belief is that moms shouldn't feel guilty about screen time as long as what kids are watching is educational and promotes development, which is her goal for all the kids shows she produces. She grew up on Mr. Rogers and Sesame Street and takes that wholesome programming with her into her own shows. Angela prides herself on the thorough research done to make her shows uniquely positive forces for kids.

Angela Santomero- Executive Producer of Blues Clues and Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood!

If you and your kids love Blues Clues and Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood- listen to this episode and meet the creator and executive producer!  Angela Santomero is so multi talented it's hard to attribute just one or two adjectives to her.  But when I think of making a difference and contributing to a positive impact on children, I think of Angela.

Angela began her career in the early 1990's at Nickelodeon.  Her Talents were quickly and easily identified and she became executive producer and writer of the very popular kids show Blues Clues.  When Fred Rogers died in 2003, "Kevin Morrison (CEO-Fred Rogers Co.) reached out to Angela and asked what show she would do to honor Fred's legacy". Her idea was an animated version of Fred Rogers' Neighborhood of Make Believe. This was the birth of  the very popular Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood.  Angela recently added "best selling author" to the list of credentials as the author of her new book, Radical Kindness.  Hopefully we can all make a difference in other people's lives.  Angela and the children's shows she creates, make an impact that will last a long time!

TEDx Talk

I mentioned a talk I gave at a SLC TEDx event. The talk was all about asking questions and this is the quote I included Angela in that talk:

"I believe so strongly in the power of listening that it has been my underlying passion while creating high qulaity kids media. I include it in my shows for children through our interactive model in varying degrees. We pace our shows much slower and with pauses to let preschoolers think, from their thoughts, and answer back. Few believed that pausing on television would make such a different to preschoolers, but the positive results have been statistically proven. We have also heard from many adults that it has taught them, as well, to slow down and pause (listen) when they ask a question. Hurray!"
