13 - Gary Sizer

As a United States Marine, Gary Sizer fell in love with backpacking and being outdoors. So in 2014, when the direction of his employer shifted drastically and he saw the writing on the wall, he did what so many aspire to do: he quit, started planning a thru-hike, and in 2014, took off from Georgia for Mt. Katahdin, Maine. His hike became a story of experiencing the little things, enjoying the stillness of the outdoors and ultimately learning that life doesn’t always adhere to a pre-determined script.

#13 | The Trail Days Show! Ft. The Real Hiking Viking, Gary Sizer, & Megan Thompson

"Thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail is just section hiking the earth." - The Real Hiking Viking

If Comic Con and Burning Man had a baby- and that baby was raised on the Appalachian Trail- this festival baby would be none other than Trail Days.  And that's precisely the recording location of Episode 13 of Backpacker Radio.  Badger is joined by The Real Hiking Viking as well as the dynamic duo of Stories from the Trail, Gary Sizer and Megan Thompson, to talk about Trail Days, thru-hiking, the military, The Lone Star Trail (again, unfortunately), FKT training for the Colorado Trail, and much more.  Weaved throughout the episode are interviews with 2018 AT thru-hikers, touching on their favorite moments from their journey so far.  And last but certainly not least is a conversation with Tom Kennedy, co-founder of Hike for Mental Health, an organization dedicated to eliminating the stigma of mental health disorders while raising money for research, and promoting the health benefits of being out in nature.

The show is brought to you by Sawyer and fueled by whiskey.

Episode #10 - Gary Sizer (Green Giant)

Gary Sizer is a former US Marine who hiked the AT in 2014. We never met on the trail, but we are now Facebook friends. Gary wrote a book about his experiences and while that is going really well, his current claim to fame is an amazing picture posted on Reddit that shows the devastating effects that the AT can have on a hiker's body. Gary is a good sport for allowing this to be shown here, though, as it has been seen more than 3,000,000 times, it might be regarded as a trifle late to keep it under wraps!! There are a bunch of ways to contact Gary and share his story. His books (Kindle, paperback and audiobook) can be found on Amazon. He's accessible on Twitter and Facebook, as well as at his website, wheresthenextshelter If you'd like to follow me, I'm also on Twitter and Facebook and you can find all the podcasts, plus videos and photographs, at my website mightyblueontheat
