Let’s Talk about Sex :: Mary Flo Ridley and Megan Michelson [Ep 328]

Don't Mom Alone Podcast

You asked and I’m so happy to have Mary Flo Ridley and Megan Michelson back to coach us on how to talk with our kids about the topic of sex. I love their approach which is explained in their online course called Birds and Bees. It’s all about having multiple conversations over the years with your kids instead of having one big TALK when they are older.  “What we want parents to do with the topic of sex is to not be afraid and be silenced, but to be equipped and have tools and phrases to say an age appropriate ways … They're drip by drip, by drip conversations, because it takes a lot for them to absorb this information.” Mary Flo and Megan take us through reasons why we should have conversations with our youngest kids about reproduction, birth and specific scientific terms for private areas. We chat about how to bring these topics up and answer questions that might make you nervous at first. It’s all about giving your kids accurate and honest information on this important topic. “I know when parents first hear about this they think, ‘I didn't want to talk to my kids about sex one time, why in the world, but I want to do this multiple times?’ But it's just so much easier to do it in bite size, age-appropriate phrases and conversations and soundbites because that's how things are digested and absorbed.” Connect with Birds & Bees:  Website:  https://birds-bees.com Facebook: facebook.com/birdsbeeshelpplease Instagram: @birds__bees Links Mentioned:   Birds & Bees Course New Birds & Bees Podcast Previous Podcasts with Birds & Bees: Ep 25: Birds and Bees? Brave conversations with our kids Part 2: The birds and the bees with Mary Flo Ridley and Megan Michelson

Pardon the Mess with Cynthia Yanof

We’re kicking off week two of brave conversations we need to have with our kids, and it’s a doozie (or at least for me it is). I, for one, am particularly proud of myself for being brave enough to have a conversation around the birds and the bees in the confines of my home, much less on a podcast with all of you! Thankfully, Mary Flo Ridley and Megan Michelson speak into this topic biblically and quite practically—and I couldn’t be more grateful.  We cover everything from the hang-ups we have as parents when it comes to talking about sex with our kids, the importance of using correct anatomical technology (my bad), and shaping our family’s narrative in this important area before culture does it for us.  If you struggle to have conversations around this topic and need a little encouragement and practical wherewithal... I promise that today’s podcast is for you!  Check out there online course, Birds & Bees.

91: Mary Flo Ridley| Let's Talk Birds and Bees

Grace Enough Podcast

www.graceenoughpodcast.com Mary Flo Ridley joins me to talk about simple, foundational conversations to have with our children, ranging from toddlers to teens, that will shape their sexual health for years to come.Questions Mary Flo and I Discussed:(4:25) Even in 2020, I have conversations with friends who cringe when it comes to having the “birds and bees” talk with their children.  We deal with questions like when is it the right time, what should I say, and so on, but Birds and Bees is all about getting rid of this idea that this is a one-time conversation in parenting. What are you hoping to see in exchange? (9:12) Let’s begin by talking to the parents who have toddlers, what is a conversation pattern they can establish to show their children they are the loving authority on the topic of their bodies? (13:36) What are some key conversations and general language parents can practice with their elementary age children? (19:11) The average age someone first sees pornography is 11 yo and are as likely to see it accidentally as on purpose.  How do you encourage parents to deal with discussing pornography with their children? (27:20) For parents of middle and high school age children (or really all young parents), talking about masturbation and puberty feels daunting. How do you encourage parents to address this topic? (32:30) Birds & Bees offers a curriculum. What can one expect if they use your curriculum? (36:15) Do you have any encouragement for the parent who feels like they are “behind” or have failed to create an open dialogue surrounding sex and our bodies? (39:38) Lastly, what are some books and other resources you would recommend to parents on this topic?Quotes to Remember:“What is the main thing you want your children to know about sex? If they’re growing up in your family? If you could give that answer in one sentence? What would that sentence be?” SHOW NOTES cont.Related Episodes:71: Krista Boan | Tips For Parents In The Digital Age 54: Nick Stumbo | Discovering Freedom From Pornography 90: Hillary Morgan Ferrer | Empowering Kids to Challenge Cultural LiesEpisode Sponsor:Heather M. When is it too young to talk to kids about sex? : Mary Flo Ridley : 144

Mom Inspired Show with Amber Sandberg

When do you think it's too young to talk to your kids about sex?Birds & Bees are back and they are trying to revolutionize the topic of sex! If you missed my first episode with Megan, feel free to go back and listen to episode 72. Today, Mary Flo and I will be talking about how to bring up sex to your kids if you haven't broached the subject yet.  She talks to us about how will our kids process the idea of sex, and how we don't want to let that be in the hands of school or the culture, we need to navigate that with them.  She asks "how do we formulate the message that reflects our values. They need to hear OUR voice on this!" We also talk about being a single parent, or military spouse and having to have these talks with the opposite sex. Mary Flo gives us some ideas on how to talk to our kids even if you are holding down the fort on your own. We also discuss pornography and how it creates a very strong addictive behavior.  One thing that stood out to me is when she mentions how we need to be very careful when our kids are on ipads, smart phones and computers. Porn comes looking for them, and we need to really protect our children. She shares how pornography is so damaging. She gives us some steps on how to talk to them about this topic. It's very powerful and eye opening and you will want to share with your friends. Hear what she says about this topic and more on the podcast. If you liked this episode make sure to check out the first episode I did on the Birds and the Bess with Megan! https://mominspiredshow.com/birds-and-bees/Resources mentioned in the show:Lean 7 week online weight loss program:I had the pleasure of doing a four-part series with Registered Dietitian Amanda Nighbert. Preparing Now for Future Puberty and Masturbation Questions Megan Michelson and Mary Flo Ridley Ep 243

Don't Mom Alone Podcast

Depending on your personal background with puberty, sex and the often avoided topic of masturbation, having open conversations with your kids on these topics may feel daunting. You may want to avoid it or get “the talk” over and done with as quickly as possible. Or maybe your kids are really young and you don’t want to think about it right now. My guests Mary Flo Ridley and Megan Michelson walk us through why starting early talking with our kids about body awareness and establishing our family story about sex is so important. “What we're trying to get rid of is this idea that this is a one-time conversation in parenting. The world that we are raising our kids in has changed so drastically that the way we as parents talk about sex has to change drastically as well. We can have multiple age appropriate conversations and a little-by-little approach where we establish a conversation pattern where we are the loving authority in our child's life on this topic.” They have great book recommendations and advice on talking with your pediatrician so you know when puberty is imminent for each child. We cover ways to pursue conversations with your kids and how to talk to them calmly without overreacting. Finally, we dive into the deeper waters of talking to your older children about masturbation, dealing with our emotional baggage when it comes to sex and how to strike the difficult balance of teaching what is normal and beneficial. “We're hearing from a lot of youth ministers and pastors that work with college kids that this is an epidemic of a great addiction. So there needs to be more of a warning of how this is normal, but not beneficial. That why it's such a difficult topic. You can say, yes, honey, this is absolutely normal. You're learning about your body and how it works, but it can become a habit of comfort. And if this is where you go when you're upset or when you're angry, if this is how you comfort yourself, then this is not beneficial to you in your future.”
