45. Bill Self: The Making of a Hall of Famer

Play
Read more

For all he’s accomplished—a national championship, three Final Fours, 10 Elite Eights and 15 Big 12 titles—Bill Self is always quick to give others credit. It’s just the way he was raised—both as a kid, and as a coach. But when you consider all the success, it’s worth wondering how a kid from Oklahoma, who self-admittedly wasn’t the greatest basketball player, ended up becoming one of the best coaches in the country. So what made Bill Self such a successful coach? Or rather—who helped shape him into a Hall of Famer? The list of names is long, and includes some of the all-time greats. How did R.C. Buford inadvertently get him into coaching? What roles did Larry Brown, Eddie Sutton and Leonard Hamilton play? And what has he learned from all of them that’s enabled him to be so successful? Bill Self was built by legends. And now, he’s becoming one.

Kansas head coach Bill Self makes an appearance on the inaugural episode of Rock Chalk J-Hawk, reminiscing about the time that Hawkins spent on Self's roster as a point guard and looking forward to what should really be an incredible season for the Jayhawks. You'd be hard-pressed to find a looser, more down-to-earth coach in college basketball than Self, and if there is anything that you can be sure of, it is that J-Hawk is going to bring the energy.

Matching this KU team against Final Four squads with Bill Self

Play
Read more

This week college basketball would be preparing for the Final Four, and the likely overall No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, Kansas, figured to have a good chance of reaching Atlanta. The team that produced two national defensive players of the years in center Udoka Azubuike and guard Marcus Garrett could have been the fourth Bill Self-coached team to get to a Final Four.

Which got us wondering, how would the 2019-20 Jayhawks have stacked up against the Final Four teams of 2008, 2012 and 2018? They were the best combination of talent and peaking-at-the-right-moment in Self’s 17 seasons in Lawrence. Self explained what made this year’s team, which won the Big 12 and finished 28-3 overall, so good, and broke down his other Final Four teams on SportsBeat KC with Blair Kerkhoff.

Nobody wanted the season to end like this. The unprecedented decision to cancel the Big 12 and NCAA Tournaments stung Kansas players, coaches and fans more than most. After all, we’re talking about a team ranked No. 1 in the country at the time the season ended. But as disappointing as the end was for all involved, this was still one of the best Jayhawk teams in recent memory. And that is something worth celebrating. But what made them great? And how did this team help carry their head coach? With the help of Bill Self, we’re bringing you the story of the 2019-2020 Jayhawk basketball team.
