Wave Goodbye to Your Fears with Mark Visser - 141

The Speaking Club: Mastering the Art of Public Speaking

Many of us have big goals and dreams, but usually achieving our ambitions means taking action outside our comfort zone, overcoming fear and uncertainty, and putting ourselves ‘at risk’ in some way...even if it’s just our ‘ego’ that’s in danger.  My guest on this show is Mark Visser, and he had a dream so big and dangerous that many people told him it wasn’t possible to achieve. But he continued anyway.  He knew he had to prepare for and accept the unpredictable so that he could achieve the unbelievable. So he trained and learned and practiced until he’d completed the challenge he’d set himself and conquered his biggest fear.  Mark is an Australian big wave surfer, author, keynote speaker and ocean adventurer. He created a process to help him reduce fear and perform at his peak in extreme danger and he has since used it to coach many world champion athletes, professional sporting teams, business and elite military groups around the world. Today, he is sharing it with you to help you conquer any fear that stands in your way. Enjoy! What you’ll discover: When Mark decided to do something extraordinary and what led him there. How Mark’s limiting beliefs were stopping him from making his dreams a reality and how he changed his mindset and attitude. The questions that guided Mark through his toughest experiences. How you can use fear to your advantage. The internal microphone that we all hold and why we should hand it over to the wiser version of ourselves. How surfing ‘Jaws’ at night fitted into Mark’s quest and led him to discover his eight steps to manage fear. The mental, emotional and physical training Mark did that helped him reach his goal. The mind-body connection and the sequence in which our bodies shut down because of fear. How Mark nearly blacked out with fear the first time he spoke! Mark’s tips for managing future based ‘imagined’ fear.  How speaking fits into Mark’s life. Why Mark wrote his book and how it can help you move closer to your dreams. Mark Visser | Big Wave Surfing & Facing Your Fears

The Athlete Diaries

Mark has surfed the worlds biggest waves.Nazare, Jaws & the middle of the ocean. 🌊Some of the waves he has surfed are beyond 80 foot which is incredible in its own right but what makes it even more spectacular is he’s done it at night in pitch black. He’s been the first in the world to accomplish lots of events like surfing Jaws (Maui) at night & jump out of an army plane to get to the middle of the ocean where the biggest waves are. 🛩What’s incredible is Mark’s intense training to accomplish these events. From paddling into the ocean at night & free diving at a shipwreck filled with sharks to eradicate his fear of them & then being blindfolded to complete an underwater obstacle course. 💧His mindset is so fascinating, the way he has been able to minimise stress and fear over the years has been credited to understanding how the mind works. 🧠He now focuses on helping other minimise stress & fear with his program @theoceanwarrior where he has worked with Kelly Slater to minimise his fear whilst being under water for upwards of a minute in the big surf.Link for free course | https://www.theoceanwarrior.com/offers/2jNHGRFs/checkout Link for paid course ($49) | https://www.theoceanwarrior.com/a/11540/t2Q447QU Instagram | mark_visserInstagram | TheAthleteDiariesYoutube | https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIPPcqPXijc8OJiABJZBAiA?view_as=subscriberHost | Guy Walker Producer & Social Media | Matthew Whyte

Performance focus with big wave surfer Mark Visser

WEMcast

Mark Robert Visser is an Australian professional big wave surfer, author, keynote speaker and ocean adventurer. Visser is best known for being the first person to surf Hawaii’s most dangerous wave Jaws, Maui, at night in 2011. Documented in a film called ‘Night Rider’. Facebook>  https://www.facebook.com/MarkVi55er/ Instagram> https://www.instagram.com/mark__visser/ Website>     www.markvisser.net Documentary probes big wave night surfing of Mark Visser By CASSANDRA MURNIEKS THEAUSTRALIAN NOVEMBER 25, 2011 TALK to any big wave surfer about their adventures and you will almost certainly be moved to consider them crazy. But what if they were to take on the big waves at night? Sunshine Coast's Mark Visser had it on his list of "things to achieve in life" and in January this year crossed it off after taking on monster waves, some with 50-foot faces in the dark at the famed Jaws break in Maui. Visser is one of the brightest big wave talents in the world, pushing his body physically and focussing mentally to undertake on of the most dangerous pastimes known to man. Visser's preparation and big wave skills have come together in a television documentary "Night Rider" to feature on Channel Nine this Sunday. "We have had this idea since about 2007. A friend told me that he had a dream about a guy who rode waves at night, which got me thinking. Was this achievable? Could it be possible?," Visser told The Australian. "I became a bit of a nutty professor in looking at all the options of making something like this happen. Other big wave surfers said it wasn't safe enough to do, but I wanted to push myself and get out of the comfort zone." With the night surf session being filmed in January, a large bulk of the documentary was filmed beforehand. Months of preparation were undertaken, which involved working with safety teams, special-forces and a number of coaches, who showed Visser a number of techniques designed to allow him to best cope in the event of something going wrong. "The training with the coaches was tough. I worked with a number of people, who prepared me for the night surfing. If I had all of those things under control, it was one less thing to worry about when it actually came to surfing Jaws," he said. Visser tested the smaller waves at night in Australia to ensure they had the technology right. To guide Visser through the waves, he had a number of lights strapped to his body, which allowed viewers to see the vast speed and the distance that he surfed the waves. His preparation included paddling in the water for up to six hours. "The coaches pushed me and they had me paddling at night via shipping channels and in shark-infested waters," Visser said. "With one of the nights, I was told to paddle in a shark area for six hours. For the first two hours, it was pitch black and I kept coming in contact with fish and jellyfish which freaked me out a bit. "After the first two hours, my eyes had adjusted to look out for the shadows and it became easier after that." The large production crew based themselves out of Maui six-months before the night surf sessions. The day before filming, things started to unravel for the well-planned crew. "We had drivers pulling out and jet skiers calling it a 'suicide mission'. Even the guy flying the helicopter pulled out, but we continued to back ourselves," he said. The film crew eventually shot the footage on the surrounding cliffs, with just a rescue-ski and his tow-in partner in the water with him. Visser was in the water for 40 minutes before claiming his first set of waves. Claiming he was 'rattled' in surfing those two, he didn't want to give up and became more confident. Starting to read the waves and have a feel for how they would break, Visser succeeded in his challenge, which left him silenced afterwards. Would he do it again? "I would do it again, but wouldn't want a camera crew there this time. I'd rather just go out in waves that I know with my brother, soaking it up with no pressure."
