Matt Barnett of https://www.bonjoro.com is not a photographer, but he was at one stage. He worked as a photographer in London for a few years before moving to Sydney, Australia when he was 26 to start the video software company which became Bonjoro.

Why video?

The idea was born from a sales-hack for his second business, where he would send every new lead a personal video instead of a plain-text email.

He knew from an early stage; customer experience is about making connections, automating where it makes sense, and providing a human connection as often as possible.

Bonjoro was born soon after and with the popularity of video – for advertising, branding, marketing, email replies and more, I thought who better to have on the show to teach us how to maximise our client experience with video.

In this interview, Matt shares how to improve and grow your photography business by using simple, natural video communication with your current and prospective clients.

Here's some more of what we cover in the interview:

  • A brief background of Matt's previous career
  • How Matt discovered the business side of video creation
  • The importance of being authentic and transparent
  • Personalised videos are extremely useful at the beginning of your funnels
  • What kind of content should you share in your videos?
  • Using videos to reengage past customers
  • Personalised videos increase the chances of getting positive reviews
  • Best practices to yield results with personalised messaging
  • Branding your videos
  • How fast should you respond with video messages?
  • Why you always need a CTA when building funnels to increase chances of the next step being taken
  • The reason only a few photographers use videos to generate leads
  • Keeping videos as short as possible
  • Limit your videos to 2 minutes or less
  • What to wear when recording video responses
  • What is most important – audio quality, video quality, rate of response?
  • How Matt records videos on his phone
  • What about generic videos to photography enquiries?
  • The best time to gather testimonials from clients
  • Can you ask for video reviews from clients?
  • Sending out 5-10 questions for client video reviews
  • How Bonjoro works
  • What clients see when they receive a Bonjoro email
  • Strategies to consider when creating your video

iTunes Reviews and Shout-outs

Each week I check for any new iTunes reviews and it's always a buzz to receive these… for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, it's confirmation that I'm on the right track with the interviews and that they really are helping you improve your photography business. That's awesome!

Secondly, iTunes is the biggest search engine when it comes to podcasts and it's your reviews and ratings that help other photographers find PhotoBizX. More listeners mean more interviews and ultimately a better show.

If you have left a review in the past, thank you! If you haven't and you'd like to, head to https://photobizx.com/itunes and you can leave some honest feedback and a rating which will help both me and the show and I'll be sure to thank you on the show and add a link to your website or blog if you let me know the URL of your website and your name.

Alternatively, if you've left a review for PhotoBizX and are looking for more backlinks to help your SEO, leave a review for the new Photography Xperiment Podcast and email me your keywords or keyword phrase and where you'd like me to link to.

Another great way to get a backlink to your site is to send a video testimonial. It doesn't need to be fancy and your phone will be perfect. Click record and tell me how PhotoBizX has made a difference to you and your photography business.

It's by far the most educational and actionable photography podcast I have found.

The premium FB group is awesome and if you ever have questions, Andrew is there to guide you.

PhotoBizX Daily Vlog Challenge – the waitlist is open

Why utilise video in your photography business? The number one reason – to make a personal connection with our prospective client, faster than ever before.

You can do this with video on your website, email replies with video plus advertising and retargeting with video.

There is no faster way to make a connection than you talking to your clients via video.

If you generally book most of the clients you meet with face to face, imagine building that bond earlier in your process and before other local photographers. It'll mean more bookings for you. Fantastic right? As long as you can be yourself and make the same kind of connection you do in person. And you can!

Want to learn how to get comfortable being yourself on camera?

This Challenge will get you there.

The improvement and transformation in members videos has been extraordinary as we add something new to focus on throughout each module – from lighting, framing, eye contact, intro and outros – all with daily prompts.

Everyone involved is getting daily feedback, and it's easy to see the fun we're all having as we progress.

The next Challenge is starting soon! Click the link and add your details to get involved: http://dailyvlogchallenge.com

The way it works

  1. Watch the daily video (with topic/Challenge included) uploaded into a separate post each day – excluding weekends.
  2. Record your video reply and upload into the comments for that unit.
  3. Once your video is uploaded, leave comments or constructive feedback (if requested) on at least 2 videos from other participants.
  4. Wait for feedback on your recording and implement suggestions into your next Challenge.

That's it, as simple as that.

surprise and delight your donors with Matt Barnett

As things are slowly opening up, do you have a favourite cafe nearby your home or work that you always visit and can't wait to go back to? If you do, you'll be familiar with this scenario: you go to the cafe a few times, and the barista starts remembering your order. The next time you show up, the barista smiles at you and asks: "americano with oat milk?" (that's my order!)

Surprised, right there and then, the barista has fostered a sense of connection. Before you know it, that cafe becomes your favourite spot. A simple gesture of acknowledging "I know you" is so powerful for sparking connection. How can we also make that magical spark happen with our donors?

Well, I want to introduce to you one of my favourite tools to foster those connections in today’s digital age and in the absence of having donor phone numbers: Bonjoro, a personalized one-to-one video messaging service. On this week's podcast, I chatted with Bonjoro's founder Matt Barnett. Matt shared with us some really doable tips to build authentic connection with your donors remotely.

At The Good Partnership, we started using Bonjoro to send personalized videos to onboard clients and students for Flipside Fundraising, and it’s getting great responses and engagement. We’re also using it with our clients and their donors. As you know, I don’t usually recommend a specific product without context. But we fell in love with Bonjoro, and we know that can be such a great tool for you right now to connect with your donors in a socially distanced world. But, even if it’s not the right tool for you (p.s they have a free version), you can try the tactics in this podcast with other tools too!

Matt Barnett

A British industrial designer & artist, moved to Australia he decided to get his MBA. He fell for tech and found himself starting different businesses. Although he failed at some, failure did not stop him from developing what is to be known as Bonjoro.

Having to ferry across the rivers of Sydney goint to work, Matt discovered that videos can play a huge role across customer acquisition. With this idea, Matt came up with Bonjoro - a video messaging app that allows you to record one on one personalized video messages for your customers.

Bonjoro has snowballed into a startup success story. Matt’s love of building great products is only surpassed by his total commitment to building great business culture, and Matt asserts that Bonjoro’s “customers as friends” culture has been the main driver of the businesses success.

Top Tips

Don't fear failure

The fear of failing can be traumatizing – it can cause us to do nothing, and therefore resist moving forward. Many of us have probably experienced this at some point. We can start by figuring out where it comes from and re-framing the way we feel about failure.

Set small goals that can help develop your confidence. Learn how to explore and evaluate all possible outcomes rationally and develop contingency plans; and practice thinking positively. By moving forward slowly but steadily, you'll begin to overcome your fear.

Don't fear failure. Stay positive, have a backup plan, and learn from whatever happens. It's one way to get to the answer you're looking for and be able to move forward.

Start now

We all have dreams we wouldd like to achieve. Most of these dreams never become more than just a thought. The reason? We don't start or move towards it. Most people tend to delay starting anything, whether it is a business, hobby, diet, relationship, etc. Everyone seems to be afraid of change or the unknown.

Planning to start something? Take small steps or come up with small goals and work on it. You'll notice that not only do you get to accomplisg a goal, but it takes you one step closer to your dream

If you want more in life, you have to go out there and take it.

Before I introduce you to our guest on today's episode of the podcast, can I ask you a quick question?

When you send an email to your audience or try and engage with a new lead for your business, does it ever feel like you're kind of talking with your imaginary friend...? Like there's no one on the other end of your messages who *actually* cares about what you have to say?

I know I’ve been there in my own journey as an entrepreneur - it’s not fun.

And if you can relate to this - I have a feeling that you're going to love what you’ll hear in my conversation with Matt.

You see, Matt is the founder of an awesome company called Bonjoro. If you’re not familiar with it, Bonjoro is a tool that can help you create personalized videos that will amaze your audience, leads, and customers.

And what Matt has discovered over the years is that using this type of personalized video is one of the most effective ways for you to actually create meaningful connections and relationships with the people in your audience.

And yes… that means higher email open rates, longer customer retention, and significantly more word of mouth referrals for you and your business.

So if you're still wondering how you can turn those anonymous visitors on your site or email list into and engaged customers and raving fans... this episode is for you.

So without further ado, let’s get to it!

As always, I'm your host Eric Turnnessen and this is Episode 149 of The Subscription Entrepreneur Podcast.
