In this episode Cat and Rosa highlight the one and only Tessa Thompson. They discuss her work on three films and ending with our newly revamped Latinx Lens Recommends. Sorry to Bother You (2018) Set in an alternate present day version of Oakland, where telemarketer Cassius Green discovers a magical key to professional success, propelling him into a universe of greed. Thompson portrays Detroit, Cassius' romantic interest. Annihilation (2018) A biologist signs up for a dangerous, secret expedition into a mysterious zone where the laws of nature don’t apply. Lena, a biologist and former soldier, joins a mission to uncover what happened to her husband inside area X, a sinister and mysterious phenomenon that is expanding across the American coastline. Once inside, the expedition discovers a world of mutated landscapes and creatures, as dangerous as it is beautiful, that threatens both their lives and sanity. Tessa plays Josie, a physicist, and although her role isn’t grand her performance certainly is memorable. Sylvie’s Love (2020) When a young woman meets an aspiring saxophonist in her father’s record shop in 1950s Harlem, their love ignites a sweeping romance that transcends changing times, geography, and professional success. Thompson stars alongside Nnamdi Asomugha as the delightful Sylvie. For Latinx Lens Recommends we look at La Historia Oficial “The Official Story” (1985). An upper-class Argentinian woman begins to suspect that the daughter she and her husband have adopted may be one of the children of the purged political of the ruling junta. Merry New Year, everybody! To see it in, it's another double-header for you. First up, a true legend of recent cinema. Pete Docter is the Chief Creative Officer at Pixar. As well as winning Oscars as the director of Inside Out and Up, he was one of the main reasons we have Toy Story and has played some sort of hand in pretty much every movie to have come out of the studio. His latest project is the hugely ambitious Soul, which he both wrote and directed. Streaming now on Disney +, the story follows a music teacher voiced by Jamie Foxx, who seeks to reunite his soul and his body after they are accidentally separated, just before his big break as a jazz musician. Then we have Tessa Thompson talking about Sylvie's Love, another film to have jazz at its very core. Set in 50s Harlem, it's a classic romance between Tess's character, with ambitions of her own, and a saxophonist that beautifully evokes the spirit of the age. It's available to watch now on Amazon Prime.
THOR:RAGNAROK|| PART TWO--it's still perfect + Hulk + Jeff Goldblum + Tessa Thompson
BDE||big disney energy
Tyler and guest Halley Mayo (Arkansas based actor) and Grant Hockenbrough (@granthock LA based actor) finish our two part series highlighting this practically perfect film. We get Hela in full force, JEFF FREAKING GOLDBLUM, Tessa Thompson is hot AF and HULK is there with a great story arc to round everything out. Idris Elba is there to make us fall in love, Odin makes us cry, Loki is a star and Skurge + Korg are some of the best characters in the MCU--we said what we said. This film is a damn delight, start to freaking finish and Thor has a great butt, so there's also that. Magical Music by Erik Backus.
