E147: The Myth of Sex Addiction w/ Dr Darrel Ray

Recovering From Religion

The idea of sex addiction is a religious notion at its root. Since 1983 religions have used the idea of sex addiction as a tool of Purity Culture. In this discussion, Dr Darrel Ray joins us once again to talk about the roots of the concept of sex addiction and how it affects you and our entire culture. This does not mean people don't have concerns and problems with their sexual behavior, but we need to treat the real issues NOT an imaginary problem based in religious ideology. Dr Darrel Ray is the Founder & President of Recovering from Religion. He has been a psychologist for over thirty years and is the author of four books: including "The God Virus-How Religion Infects Our Lives and Culture" and "Sex and God-How Religion Distorts Sexuality". Secular Sexuality 09.05 02-03-2022 with Christy Powell, Puck, and Dr Darrel Ray

Secular Sexuality

We’ve mentioned before that no amount of pornography is truly ‘addictive’ and that erotic hypnosis, as sexy as it may be, cannot in fact wash your brain. That said, it may be interesting to note that there’s an internet’s worth of ‘pornosexual’ products meant to ‘relapse your addiction,’ ‘transform your mind’ or ‘bend you to my will.’ What should we make of these ominous warnings- sexy/silly samples of erotic submission or dangers doorways into a dark addiction? On this episode P*ck and Darrel bring Christy and our audience a cautious peek into the fantasy of being out of control, controlled or outright addicted to the supposedly slippery slope of sexual depravity. Watch if you dare, call in with your questions and comments and find out what’s turning us on this week on SecX! The Atheist Experience 26.05 01-30-2022 with Matt Dillahunty and Dr Darrel Ray

The Atheist Experience

In today’s episode of the Atheist Experience, Matt Dillahunty is joined by Dr. Darrel Ray!Starting off is Kyle from NY who believes that they hear spirits talking to them when they pray. How do you know these are spirits? Just because you don’t have an answer to the question “what is it?” doesn’t mean that you are justified in calling them spirits. For all you know it’s a manifestation of Agent Smith trying to control your life from the shadows.Next up from KY is Eric who is calling to talk about upcoming Recovering From Religion Foundation events and volunteer opportunities! Thanks for calling Eric!Up next is JR from AR who claims to have figured out a way to detect the presence of a spiritual world using a pendulum? Why does it seem like every time one of these “techniques” is presented, they always seem to develop a humanesque performance anxiety.Next is Jessica from UT who believes Atheism is a privileged position. There is nothing necessarily privileged about asking a question or holding a belief, it's the external social and physical factors, such as being able to publicly out yourself atheist without fear of harm that make something privileged.Andrew from ME is calling to ask if mental health diagnoses are subjective, and if so, does that make the conclusions of experts in those fields less valuable?Dave from FL is coming in hot with currently unanswerable questions. Since we have yet to develop time travel, we have no idea if there was an infinite past. Like with the first caller, a lack of information isn’t a blank check to insert whatever indemonstrable assertion you feel makes sense that day.Next is Duke from CA who recounts an argument they had with a theist regarding possible tenable positions for a given proposition. Make sure you read up on the material you are discussing so that you can adequately defend your position and have a productive conversation.Steve from CA is calling in to talk about the possible connection between specific mental health illnesses and religious belief. That connection may or may not exist, or each case could be different making such generalizations unjustified.Alvin from NC wants to know the difference between atheism and agnosticism. While definitions can be good educational starting points, when having a conversation, address the person's actual position, not what you want them to defend.Next is Jason from SC who is arguing for the existence of an objective morality by comparing God to a sports referee.Up next is Jason from Canada who thinks that atheists should find common ground with deists & theists regarding morality. Has the caller never interacted with anyone who isn’t them?

E92: The Science Of Sex w/ Dr. Darrel Ray

Recovering From Religion

Religions teach nothing about actual sexuality, biology and why our bodies work as they do. In this talk Dr. Ray will be discussing some basic facts about sex, evolution and human sexuality, like why is the penis shaped as it is? What is it with all those sperm males produce? What is sexual dimorphism? Are we chimps, gorillas or bonobos? We breed cows, chickens and other animals, could we be breeding ourselves as well? Learning the science of sex can help you make your own decisions about your sexuality and help you throw away the 3,000 year old ideas found in religious indoctrination.  Trigger warning: This discussion contains images of genetalia and acknowledges the existence of sex. Dr Darrel Ray is the Founder & President of Recovering from Religion. He has been a psychologist for over thirty years and is the author of four books: including "The God Virus-How Religion Infects Our Lives and Culture" and "Sex and God-How Religion Distorts Sexuality". Dr. Ray has been a student of religion most of his life and holds a Masters Degree in religion as well as a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology/Anthropology with a Doctorate in Psychology.  Hosted by Eric Wells, the RfR Support Group Director and Kara Griffin, RfR Helpline Agent  Recorded on June 21, 2021 For RfRx comments, inquiries & topical questions, email us at RfRx@recoveringfromreligion.org. Recovering From Religion

The Atheist Experience 25.32 08-08-2021 with Matt Dillahunty and Dr. Darrel Ray

The Atheist Experience

In today’s episode of the Atheist Experience, Matt Dillahunty is joined by Dr. Darrel Ray!The first caller is Aaron from TX who wants to accuse Matt of being a bully. If you are going to accuse somebody of something, please have clear examples ready to go.Up next is Clifford from VA who has recently escaped from religion through applying skepticism, but is concerned about his mother’s religious religious beliefs and the impact they may have on the caller’s son. Here is the article like that Dr. Ray mentioned during the show: http://tiny.cc/rfrrecoveryUp next is Anthony from IL who wants to know how Atheists have disproven all gods as well as claims that they have scientific and personal evidence to support the existence of the Christian God.Next is Alvin from NC who claims that a Pew Research study shows that Christians live seven years longer than Atheists. Assuming the finding in the study is true, the actual results do not necessarily explain the reasons why this is the case.Next is Lexi from OK who recently became an Ex-JW, and has questions about how they should identify themselves given that they no longer accept the claims by the organization, but are still struggling to detach themselves from the indoctrination.Up next is Marquis from NC who wants to talk about their motivations behind their decision to leave their religion. Thanks for calling Marquis!Next is George from AZ who believes that they have evidence of Jesus being crucified. The caller’s understanding of biblical history and the Christian tradition are lacking and is very confused about the definition of the word “anonymous.”Next is Brandon from AZ claims that Atheists look at science using rose colored glasses when it comes to evidence for Jesus. “Hey Ya’ll, Watch This” is not evidence for the truth of biblical claims.Next is Oliver from Brazil who is looking for advice on how to break free of indoctrination, specifically with regards to human mortality. As Dr. Ray says, exposing yourself to other ideologies is a great way of teaching your brain that you don’t have to be bound to one belief system. Our final caller is Honey from NC who wants to talk about their fear of leaving religion. Religion connects directly to our baser emotions and thrives on those. This is why religious belief doesn’t necessarily correlate to intellect or analytical abilities. It’s going to take time to break free, but there are resources out there to make the journey easier.
