Holistic Approach to High Performance with Dr. Fergus Connolly - Petey Performance Podcast #57
The Petey Performance Podcast
This episode of the podcast is with expert performance coach, Dr. Fergus Connolly. He is one of the world’s foremost performance coaches with over 20 years experience working with high performers in elite corporate, sport and military. Dr. Connolly has experience working in almost every major sport, previously consulting with San Fransisco 49ers, Dublin GAA, Munster Rugby, Liverpool FC, New York Knicks, Welsh Rugby Union, University of Michigan and many more. Myself and Fergus had a fantastic chat around all things high performance, touching on how he defines it, how he has developed his holistic approach, why it is more advantageous to become a generalist over a specialist and the powerful lessons he has learned over the 20 years he has been in the industry. There is tonnes of value in this conversation and as a result it went on a little longer than planned. However, if you manage to listen to the whole thing, I have no doubts that you will gain an incredible insight into the mind of one of the industries most successful practitioners.

Ep. 95 - Dr. Fergus Connolly - The Happiness Handbook
Smart Athlete Podcast
Today, I sit down with one of the top performing coaches who has worked with the San Francisco 49ers, is the a author of 3 books including today's subject The Happiness Handbook for High Achievers, and has a PhD in Computer-based optimization, Dr. Fergus Connolly.I start our conversation by asking him what he does when taking a time-off, in which I discover his "secret" hobby, and he shares why it's also ideal to do other things aside from what you currently good at doing (or your career)We discuss the influence of social circles and how they affect your life's trajectory. Given how important it is: I ask Fergus if he knows a good way to change your social circle and when it's necessary. Fergus also tells me about how to deal with negative thoughts - even though we can't always control them there is definitely a way to deal with them. Hit the play button to hear from Fergus on how to be not just an achiever, but a happy one at that.
In Episode 012, I had the pleasure of meeting up once again with Fergus Connolly to discuss his thoughts on education and learning in the field of sport performance and, quite honestly, any field in modern times. We discuss the traits of great leaders and mentors, and the importance of communication and critical thinking. But having good teachers is not enough. A reduction in opportunities for social interaction in educational settings has also been a problem for young people in the last few years, with students having less one-on-one opportunities with teachers and mentors. When teachers have an opportunity to spend quality time with students and apprentices, more than just information will be passed on and consumed. Within organizations, there is also a need to improve social interactions amongst practitioners to enhance their overall synergy as a performance and medical team. Sometimes these organizations need a professional consultant external to their team to come in and facilitate better communication and improved efficiency internally, taking advantage of the expertise already present within an organization. And, finally, organizing your own teaching materials into a presentation or a course forces you to really rethink your approach and examine your philosophy in a critical manner. In a way, it is an internal knowledge audit that all of us should do on a regular basis.Dr. Fergus Connolly is one of the world's leading experts in team sport and human performance. His highly acclaimed book Game Changer is the first blueprint for coaches to present a holistic philosophy for winning in all team sports. Fergus is the only coach to have worked full time in every major league around the world. He helps teams win at the highest level with the integrated application of best practices in all areas of performance. Fergus has served as Director of Elite Performance for the San Francisco 49ers, Sports Science Director with the Welsh Rugby Union, and Performance Director for University of Michigan Football. He has guided coaches, support staff and players in the NBA, Australian Rules Football and international cricket.
