Ep. 95 - Dr. Fergus Connolly - The Happiness Handbook
Smart Athlete Podcast
Today, I sit down with one of the top performing coaches who has worked with the San Francisco 49ers, is the a author of 3 books including today's subject The Happiness Handbook for High Achievers, and has a PhD in Computer-based optimization, Dr. Fergus Connolly.I start our conversation by asking him what he does when taking a time-off, in which I discover his "secret" hobby, and he shares why it's also ideal to do other things aside from what you currently good at doing (or your career)We discuss the influence of social circles and how they affect your life's trajectory. Given how important it is: I ask Fergus if he knows a good way to change your social circle and when it's necessary. Fergus also tells me about how to deal with negative thoughts - even though we can't always control them there is definitely a way to deal with them. Hit the play button to hear from Fergus on how to be not just an achiever, but a happy one at that.
In Episode 012, I had the pleasure of meeting up once again with Fergus Connolly to discuss his thoughts on education and learning in the field of sport performance and, quite honestly, any field in modern times. We discuss the traits of great leaders and mentors, and the importance of communication and critical thinking. But having good teachers is not enough. A reduction in opportunities for social interaction in educational settings has also been a problem for young people in the last few years, with students having less one-on-one opportunities with teachers and mentors. When teachers have an opportunity to spend quality time with students and apprentices, more than just information will be passed on and consumed. Within organizations, there is also a need to improve social interactions amongst practitioners to enhance their overall synergy as a performance and medical team. Sometimes these organizations need a professional consultant external to their team to come in and facilitate better communication and improved efficiency internally, taking advantage of the expertise already present within an organization. And, finally, organizing your own teaching materials into a presentation or a course forces you to really rethink your approach and examine your philosophy in a critical manner. In a way, it is an internal knowledge audit that all of us should do on a regular basis.Dr. Fergus Connolly is one of the world's leading experts in team sport and human performance. His highly acclaimed book Game Changer is the first blueprint for coaches to present a holistic philosophy for winning in all team sports. #125 Fergus Connolly and Cody Royle - Royle and Connolly on High Performance Coaching
The Sport Psych Show
I’m delighted to welcome back on the show Author and Performance Expert, Fergus Connolly and Head Coach of Canada’s AFL (Australian Football League) programme Cody Royle. Fergus and Cody recorded a series of webinars over the summer of 2020 which spurred some brilliant conversation about coaching and performance. And so, I wanted to get them both on to talk about some of the key take-aways they had from the show. We also speak about their new books – Fergus’ book, The Happiness Handbook for High Achievers: Stoics, Circles & Sheepdogs, takes readers on a journey in search of the answers to our most pressing questions about happiness and contentment. And Cody’s latest book which is due for release 1st February is The Tough Stuff – a book that focuses entirely on the human experience of head coaching - the emotional toll, the identity issues, the loneliness.
This was a past conversation, one of two, that Josh and I had with Fergus Connolly. We chatted with Fergus prior to the release of his book Game Changer and then again after the book was published. In this conversation, Josh and I discuss topics from within the book. We discuss complex systems. Why is it important that coaches understand the theory of complex systems? How do create order within the system? The topic of game-model is discussed and why it is not just the on-field elements. Enjoy this purification of sports science.
