The International Documentary Association (IDA) has been nurturing, guiding, and contributing to the projects and lives of documentary filmmakers since its inception in 1982. In the organisation’s wordsHowever, for many of us doc filmmakers who are not really connected to IDA, it can seem like a daunting or even elite organisation if we don’t feel like we have access to its many tools &amp; resources or we don’t live in Los Angles, California (where they are headquartered). But I am here to tell you that it’s all a common misconception, this idea that IDA is for the really big name doc filmmakers or only for those who are working in the industry. In fact, that’s kind of the opposite of who IDA is or who they are for.But don’t take it from me. Take it from the man himself: Simon Kilmurry, the current executive director of IDA. The Importance of IDA for the Doc Filmmaker with Simon Kilmurry

International Documentary Association (IDA) is fiercely committed to protecting and defending the rights of documentary filmmakers to practice their craft, seek and reveal truth in their films, and make and sell their work freely in a fair marketplace. We strenuously uphold the principles of free speech and believe that documentary films, however provocative they may be, should never be silenced by an authority, corporation or legal system that may feel threatened by their content. Where filmmakers are under fire, and their predicament stands to set precedent for us all, the IDA brings together the weight of our community to fight for their rights in the courts, the press, congress or wherever that threat may lie. IDA is the only group advocating specifically for the documentary filmmaking community. In many ways, this makes IDA’s advocacy work the most important and relevant work we do. If documentary films better inform your world, if you believe in freedom of speech, if you are concerned that the media space grows ever smaller and cherish the diversity that independent voices bring, and if you're a fan of David (over Goliath) then you probably share our values. Documentary storytelling expands our understanding of shared human experience, fostering an informed, compassionate, and connected world. International Documentary Association (IDA) / Film School interview with Executive Director Simon Kilmurry

The annual International Documentary Association Awards are in the spotlight of this episode, which was recorded on location in Los Angeles, including a visit to the ceremony at the Paramount Theatre. IDA executive director Simon Kilmurry talks about assuming that role in 2015, the importance of the awards and his organization's mission. Career achievement winner Gordon Quinn of Kartemquin Films reflects on his decades spent making socially conscious documentaries. And award winners Stevan Riley ("Listen to Me Marlon"), Brett Morgen ("Cobain: Montage of Heck") and Matthew Heineman ("Cartel Land") weigh in on their big nights.
