Meet Born To Run Star Barefoot Ted McDonald and Hear About His Big Wave Philosophy of Running and How That Journey Brought Him to Leadville
Grit, Guts and Determination: The Leadville Race Series Podcast
Welcome to this episode of Grit, Guts and Determination, The Leadville Race Series Podcast, a leading authority on all things Leadville. Host Cole Chlouber takes us on a story-telling journey of the 38 year rich history of this race. Listen in as they provide tips, tricks, and stories from the Leadville members. In today’s episode we meet the character of the book Born To Run, Barefoot Ted McDonald. Ted has not only experienced Leadville and the Tarahumara, but has taken it a step further to create his own running sandal brand called Luna Sandals. As the conversation begins, Barefoot Ted recalls how Leadville found him. He served as a pacer in 2007 for a friend participating in Leadville and was captivated by its deep history, tradition and familial aspect. Needless to say, Ted has been coming back to Leadville every year since. Barefoot Ted is the subject of the popular book Born To Run written by Christopher McDougall. The book covers a race and captured people's attention by telling the story of running through the history of humanity. Thanks to the book, many people have been awakened to their own potential as a human and athlete alike. In Ted’s later 30’s, he didn’t consider himself a long distance runner. He made it his mission to overcome the feeling of pain he felt running long distances. Ted grew up in barefoot surf and skate culture in southern California in the 70’s. After doing some research, he became intrigued by the concept of barefoot running and the anatomy of the foot. Barefooting ended up becoming the tool which allowed Ted to reconnect and understand what it was like to move well. Next, Ted discusses his own company Luna Sandals, which he started in a basement in Seattle in 2009. He was totally new to the craft but after realizing the superior functionality of the sandals, has yet to look back. The name of the company came from another character in the book, Manuel Luna. Listen as Ted tells the fascinating story behind this inspiration and the Tarahumara. In addition to paying homage to Manuel, Ted held on to the hope that over time he would be able to do something good for the world in return. Ted gives insight into Busuréliame, a grassroots program he is a spokesperson for. Busuréliame, meaning “inner awakening”, aims to spread cultural awareness and education to Tarahumara children. Finally, Ted praises Leadville 100, believing it to encompass 100 years in a single day. He explains his secret philosophies to training. He says it’s the setbacks in life which really propel you forward. To the Leadville family members coming from sea level, he recommends learning new breathing techniques for the different atmosphere. To him, Leadville is happiness, family and community. Thanks for joining! Don’t forget to like, share, and subscribe.
Barefoot Ted McDonald is a shaman. In 2009 he became a central character in Christopher McDougall’s best selling book about natural running and movement, Born To Run. Ted was initially portrayed (perhaps unfairly) as the quintessential ugly American, a brash, larger than life counterpoint to the retiring Tarahumara, the legendary distance runners whom McDougall’s party had ventured to the Copper Canyons of Northern Mexico to engage with. Ted’s arc formed the emotional pivot of the book when McDougall described the bond between Ted and Manuel Luna, a Tarahumara man whose son had been brutally murdered by a drug cartel. Since the book’s publication Barefoot Ted (as he is now widely known) has become synonymous with barefoot running and an advocate for us investigating our atavistic potential for natural movement. Ted’s call that running should be a state of play; joyful and unhindered. First with Five Fingers and now with his own company Luna Sandals, Ted sells footwear that at periods in our history were ubiquitous, however now are considered iconoclastic or niche. The son of an LAPD detective, who grew up ensconced in the surf and skateboard culture of 1970’s California, Ted’s curiosity for what propels us has changed the course of his life - and arguably many others. Ted beamed in with us from the Republic of California in a sun drenched ray of pure joy. Answering our questions before they were asked, and riffing mighty on the microdosing of movement, how play is vital to life, and the holism of community. Ted talked about his recent adventures at Leadville, his evolution from pioneer to elder and all points in between. What is so evident is Ted’s love of life, and those strange critters that are human beings. At the end of our conversation, Ted hooted “LIVE JAZZ” and he’s not wrong ... This is the conversational equivalent of Sun Ra’s Space is the Place. Enjoy.
One of the stars of the book, Born to Run, Barefoot Ted describes himself as a feral child who escaped adulthood. He plays by his own rules and wants to help others also find their own inner child. He's passionate about natural movement and that led him to a fascination with the natural selection of footwear in human culture. And so Luna Sandals was born to provide people with portable ground to get that barefoot feel when you still need something rugged (Steve loves them). Ted also talks about the Busuréliame (Inner Awakening) Project, a new cultural education project led by the Tarahumara for the Tarahumara. #22 Barefoot Ted on Running with the Tarahumara, Creating Luna Sandals, and the Beautiful Perfection of the Human Foot
Barefoot Ted McDonald sprinted into the spotlight with the publication of the bestselling book Born to Run by Christopher McDougall. Barefoot Ted is one of the crazy, larger-than-life characters that springs off the pages of McDougall’s recount of their epic adventure to run a 50-mile race in the deadly Copper Canyons of Mexico with the legendary Tarahumara Indians. Growing up as a rebellious skater and surfer in sunny California, Ted was not lacking in athletic skill. But in his mid-30s, he almost gave up on the idea of ever running seriously. Despite his various endeavours to run pain free, nothing seemed to work over the long distance. Until, that is, Ted returned to his beach-based lifestyle and kicked off his running shoes for good. Only then did he really start running. And now, many, many marathons and ultramarathons later, he is not slowing down. Barefoot Ted and I explore many facets of his fascinating journey, including his love of riding penny-farthing bicycles, his ongoing adventures with the Tarahumara Indians – perhaps the greatest long distance runners on the planet, and acting as ‘El Presidente’ of Luna Sandals – an adventure and lifestyle sandal company. Barefoot Ted’s path in life is to seek and share insights that help people to come alive. His enthusiasm is infectious and his passion palpable. And through all of his seeking, some things about Ted are likely to never change: he’ll continue to surf, continue to run, and continue to follow his truth through whatever parts of himself it leads. Be sure to stay tuned in right to the end of this fascinating discussion to receive a special listener discount code for your next purchase of Luna Sandals.
