TEAM AMERICA WORLD POLICE with Sina Rahmani

It's the July 4th weekend, so you better believe we're celebrating America (f-yeah!) by riding along with TEAM AMERICA WORLD POLICE! Melding the crass humor of Trey Parker and Matt Stone with the grand artistic legacy of marionette, and just a dash of geopolitics for flavor, Team America attempted to deflate the Hollywood establishment while offering a antidote to a polarized political landscape. But do its crude satirical jabs still land? Or... wait, is that puppet going down on that other puppet?

In this episode we talk to Sina Rahmani about Edward Said’s theory of orientalism and how we see it playing out in the discourse surrounding the US assassination of Qasim Soleimani, Iran’s retaliatory strikes on the largest American military base in Iraq, and the Trump's decision not to respond with further military action. Sina also challenges Western portraits of Iran as well as the dominant narratives around the events of the last month or so.

Sina Rahmani earned his PhD in Comparative Literature at UCLA. He is the creator of The East is a Podcast

[I went on one of my favourite podcasts, Rewatchability, to talk about Argo. Enjoy!]

With the Oscars approaching we take a look back at ARGO! Directed by and starring Ben Affleck, Argo beat out a crowded field to win Best Picture at the 2012 ceremony. But is it all CIA propaganda?

@UrOrientalist joins us to extract the truth!

411- ARGO with Sina Rahmani

As the Oscars draw near and we prepare to bestow statuettes upon the movies that deserve them most, we look back to ARGO, the 2012 Academy Award Winner for Best Picture. Directed (and starring!!!) Ben Affleck. Also featuring Victor Garber, Bryan Cranston, John Goodman, Alan Arkin and every other recognizable person Ben Affleck could call in for a favor, Argo tells the very real story about how, during the revolution, six diplomats were ferried out of the country by pretending they were Canadian filmmakers. Sounds thrilling, eh!

We were dazzled by all the celebrities in 70's wigs, but how does it hold up now?

A recording of an article I wrote almost 14 years ago. I cringe at some of the prose. Part two will be behind the paywall.

An appeal:

Please consider supporting the show. I can't do this for much longer unless I can at least hit my goal of $1500 a month. (That literally would give me enough for rent + $300). Right now, I make less than a third of that and it's unsustainable. I am also a very talented editor and translator, so consider commissioning me!

You can visit my website eastpodcast.com for all the links to the Patreon, Venmo, PayPal. I hate to beg but beating around the bush isn't working.

Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope!

*UNLOCKED* Islamic Republic of Seinfeld feat. Sina Rahmani

America desperately wants to go to war with Iran, so much that it's willing to engineer some extremely fake circumstances under which it can claim to be the victim of aggression. Why is that? Well, according to Bret Stephens, it's because they hate Ben Franklin, or something. To discuss this, we bring on Sina Rahmani, host of the The East is a Podcast, and ask him why the US can't seem to stop broadcasting its war horniness.
