Zak Williams Speaks On Losing His Father To Suicide and How Being Of Service Changed His Life

It Ain't Weak to Speak with Sam Webb

My Guest Today, Zak Williams, son of the late and great Robin Williams, has gone through a lot in the past after the death of his father, who died by suicide in 2004. Zak worked hard to overcome anxiety and depression. He is now a Mental Health Advocate and the Co-Founder and CEO of PYM (Prepare Your Mind), which produces all-natural amino acid-infused mood chews to support life’s ups and downs, and is passionate about helping others deal with their mental health issues. In this episode, Zak shares with me his personal experience dealing with anxiety and depression during his teenage years after losing a friend by suicide, which worsened when his father died of suicide. He explains how he used to suppress the anxiety instead of dealing with it, which came back with a vengeance.Zak reminds us that people are going through a lot, and many of them don’t have the tools and people around to help them overcome the challenges. Also, learning to be of help and service to humanity has a massive healing element.Topics we cover and where to find them:[00:42] Intro[01:54] Zak Williams background information[03:18] About Robbin Williams, Zak’s father[05:30] How mental health unfolded for Zak[08:50] The stigma of mental health in communities[11:45] The causes of mental health struggles[16:44] How Zak dealt with his anxiety as a teenager[19:22] The feeling of losing a father[21:27] Getting through trauma[26:07] The victim’s mindset[28:10] The winner’s mindset[28:39] Advice to people going through hardships[30:32] PYM and mental health advocacy[36:12] The greatest thing that Zak has learned in his lifeLike this show? 7. Healing From Our Collective Trauma with Zak Williams

The Big Silence

Zak Williams has spent a long time thinking about the ramifications of mental health as a result of traumas experienced within his family. His father, Robin Williams, was tragically lost to Lewy Body Dementia in 2014.Our stories, in that respect, are similar. Today, though, we’re focused more so on, well – today. It’s impossible to avoid acute awareness of the pandemic we all find ourselves (still) in the middle of. But alongside that, there is another, parallel issue, a serious mental health pandemic taking hold. After everything that’s happened over the last few years, we’re finally coming to acknowledge the very real impact that prolonged isolation and fear have put us in as a collective society. We discuss this complex issue before Zak shares actionable first steps to begin the healing process, discusses the downsides of taking any healing method too far (even gaming), and opens up about the visceral experience of grieving in public.Resources:youcanpym.combringchange2mind.orgRead: "The Mood Cure"The Big Silence YouTube ChannelPre-Order: The Big Silence by Karena DawnSign up for The Big Silence newsletter at TheBigSilence.com to stay up to date with our upcoming May book tour!“The Big Silence” theme song written and performed by James Nicholas Kinney.Executive Handyman, Bobby Goldstein. The Big Silence is produced and published by Crate Media.

Precision Mental Health | Zak Williams & Dr. Raghu Appasani

Field Tripping

On this episode we are joined by guests Zak Williams, son of the late actor/comedian Robin Williams, and the founder of the MINDS Foundation, psychiatrist Dr. Raghu Appasani. They discussed their service and advocacy for mental health, their own mental health journeys, psychedelics, the importance of nutrition, and more! After Zak’s father’s death in 2014, Zak’s anxiety became extreme, leading to severe depression and alcohol/substance abuse. While he thankfully got sober, it didn’t solve everything. Through extensive research, he discovered the wealth of botanical adaptogens and amino acid complexes to help recalibrate and heal his mind and body, which led to opening PYM (“Prepare Your Mind”) - his company which produces “mood chews” - which he co-founded with his wife. He hired psychiatrist, neuroscientist, mental health advocate, and entrepreneur, Dr. Raghu Appasani as the Chief Medical Officer. Dr. Raghu also founded the MINDS Foundation, a mental health nonprofit committed to eliminating the stigma surrounding mental illness through education, training, and providing access to cost-effective, high quality care. Zak Williams: Mental Health, Processing Loss, and Finding Happiness

Finding Mastery

This week’s conversation is with Zak Williams, the son of the late Robin Williams and co-founder and CEO of PYM, a mental wellness company rooted in the belief that there is a world where someone can be the best version of themselves simply by establishing easy daily rituals that help support their mind and overall wellbeing. Zak is a US trustee of the international advocacy organization, United for Global Mental Health, a board member of mental health awareness non-profit Bring Change 2 Mind, an advisor to national policy organization Inseparable, and the mental health tech platform Project Healthy Minds. September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, so it’s an important time to honor those who have been impacted and help others who might be struggling realize there’s alternative options.I’ve personally been affected by suicide and Zak opens up about the impact it had on him in this conversation, too. We discuss his experience growing up with an incredibly successful parent – the conditions that led to Zak’s mental health challenges, and how the same practices he used to right the ship, can be just as applicable in your own life.----Please support our partners! We're able to keep growing and creating content for YOU because of their support.
