Non-Clinical Career Options with the Doctor's Doctor, Michelle Mudge-Riley, DO
The Prosperous Doc
You go through years of medical school, residency, and training, focused on one goal – to finally become a doctor. But what happens when after everything you’ve been through, you feel like being a doctor isn’t your calling anymore? That you don’t feel the same fire or passion as you did on your first day of medical school? Are you confined to the medical industry or are there more paths available? In this episode of Prosperous Doc, host Shane Tenny speaks with Michelle Mudge-Riley, a.k.a. The Doctor’s Doctor, about her experience leaving clinical practice and how she’s helping other doctors do the same. She shares her story of leaving medicine and created a business by helping other doctors who’ve been through similar situations.A number of factors, both internal and external, can leave clinicians feeling like a failure for wanting to leave medicine. Because medicine requires a laser focus, doctors often fail to realize that there are a multitude of options available for people with their education and training. (9:25) She says, “Once you realize what's out there, you then realize how much more is out there.” (10:00)Not all doctors Michelle works with want to leave medicine, some are simply burned out and seeking change or supplemental non-clinical work. With that in mind, she shares some of the key indicators she uses to help doctors discern the right path for them. Michelle says “the most important thing is to hear their story and to talk with them and to provide a safe place for them to talk things out, because ultimately at the end of the day, each person sort of knows which path they need to take.” (15:07) Not everyone needs or wants to completely transition out of medicine – they just need to understand that other avenues exist and are available to them. (27:00)Michelle provides closing advise for anyone feeling lost in their career and considering leaving medicine, “there's no shame in looking at what's out there, what the options are. You don't have to make any commitments. But, the biggest and most important thing is,: don't lose confidence in yourself and you're not a failure.” (28:42)For more information on Michelle and her work, check out the Physicians Helping Physicians website. It is imperative that you review your policies frequently to determine if they are still adequate for your current needs. Your home, life, and disability insurance, for instance, may not be sufficient compared to when you first purchased them early in your career. Re-evaluate them and make sure they’re in order so that the foundation of your financial plan continues to be stable and strong. Episode 36: Physicians Helping Physicians Make Career Transitions w/Dr. Michelle Mudge-Riley
Next Level Physicians: Thriving Outside the Box
SHOW NOTES: This week next level entrepreneur and Dr. Michelle Mudge-Riley and I took the conversation to another level as we had a special conversation about physicians helping physicians and she reveals what she is doing to help physicians who are interested in non-clinical careers this summer in July! Highlights from the conversation: Dr. Mudge’s Background ● Dr. Mudge was in pathology training as a pathology before transitioning in 2004 She loved medicine, but wasn’t sure clinical medicine was what she felt comfortable with. Back in those days, resources that now are available all over the internet weren’t there. That made her feel alone and lost. ● She then tried other jobs somehow related to medicine - which was the only work experience she had - and worked for a medical device company and hospital administration. Without marketing or administration knowledge, the outcomes weren’t exactly good. ● She started telling her story, and it got picked up by different news channels. Later, she was invited to speak in conferences about her experience. Not long after that, her clients started reaching out to her for coaching services. A Message For the Doctors that Feel Like they Outgrew Their Careers It’s a bit scary, because you may feel like you are turning your back into what you worked so hard for. You are not a failure, you are exploring other options. It’s valid to think about businesses that you’d like to start, careers that you’d like to explore. Spread your wings, because good things come with that. The Situation of Doctors Trying to Change Their Career Path ● No one is safe form how lost they will feel once they make the transition. Triple board certified orthopedics, surgeons, etc… ● Currently, there is what seems to be a mass exodus. Doctors are looking towards changing their career, and this doesn’t necessarily mean coming out of clinical, but just practicing on their own terms. ● What stops most of the people is fear. “What’s out there? Is there anything for me?” ● There are many different paths that people can take: Telemedicine, utilization review work, healthcare IT, pharma medical science liaison work, digital technology related or unrelated to medicine… How To Help Doctors During the Transition ● Preparing their minds for the journey: Most of physicians look only at the destination. Becoming a doctor was a journey, and most forget that. The transition will be journey too. ● It’s best to leave the competitive mindset behind: Striving to be as good as it gets is wonderful, but there’s no need to push others down. There’s enough bread for everyone. ● Confidence: Many will say that a transition is stupid, a waste of time, or a waste of medical training. There’s a reason someone decided to do the transition, and that should be the one thing on their mind, and their main motivation. Dr. Michelle Mudge-Riley: It’s Never Been a Better Time to Be Confused About What You Want
Quit Happens | How (and why!) to strategically quit your job, leave your relationship, or part ways with toxic mindsets.
Dr. Michelle Mudge-Riley has always refused to settle. In medical school, she realized patient care wasn’t for her…which was a difficult realization for someone on the road to becoming a doctor. Deciding NOT to settle for a job with patient care led her down a path through more schooling, then through a leapfrog job, and eventually on to what she does now - helping mid-career professionals make career transitions using the techniques she’d picked up along her journey. She points out that it’s a great time to not know what you want to do, as you no longer need another degree to do something different. She encourages thinking about ways to educate yourself outside of the debt-ridden educational system, and also points out that it has never been easier to go get experience in careers of your choice. And lastly, she helps professionals wrestle with the loss of identity often experienced when leaving a high-profile professional career - which often includes pointing out both that they can always go back, but also, reminding them to look at what they’re running toward…which is generally a happier, healthier work life. Check out the Physicians Helping Physicians conference in Austin this April!
