Interview with Jessica Carter: How Mindfulness and Yoga Connect to Entrepreneurship
Rooted in Christ with Carol DenHartog
Jessica is an army veteran. She and her husband love to travel and have been to all 50 states and 50 countries. She’s been a leader in her company, doTERRA for about 6 years recently reaching the top 1%. Though she taught elementary music for 13 years, she now teaches about the life-changing benefits of doTERRA essential oils and yoga. She opened her yoga studio on February 3rd, 2020. It closed just 6 weeks later as a result of COVID. She did not let this get her down. She dove into personal development. She achieved her 500-hour yoga certification and published an Amazon number one best-selling eBook ōmmYōga Kids, which combines essential oils, meditations, mantras, and yoga to help families work through difficult emotions so they aren’t stored in the body. She’s releasing her second book which is the adult version of ōmmYōga at the end of October. She’s recently completed training to become a mindfulness coach and is looking forward to adding this to her tool belt of helping guide others to heal. Those of you who are Mainers might be familiar with this week’s guide-in training.Jessica Carter is part of the Carter’s Cross Country Ski family of Western Maine. Her parents opened their first ski center in Oxford in the mid-80s, and followed it up with a second location in Bethel in 1992. The Bethel location took off, and is now the headquarters for all the Carter's operations, which include an extensive trail system, a retail operation, as well as a lodge and other guest accommodations.Jes has been skiing and involved in the family business from the get go, but recently left a decade-plus career as a teacher to work side-by-side with her mom running the show. She has big plans for expansion of the Carter’s business to make it a year-round recreation destination, and has also begun the process of obtaining her Maine Guide’s license. As we discuss in this interview, Jes has already managed to take her tween daughter, retirement-age mom, and novice hiking sister on multi-day backpacking adventures to, or within, striking distance of Katahdin’s summit, so I think she’s got some solid guide skills to draw on already!I fast-tracked the editing on this one because I don’t want any of you to miss out on the huge tent sale Jes and her family are hosting at Carter’s Cross Country Ski Center this coming weekend, October 9th - 12th, 2020. If you’re going to be in Western Maine, I hope you’ll stop by and celebrate Indigenous People’s Day with a new nordic setup or some great layering pieces for your winter adventuring!Connect with Jes on Instagram and Facebook, and make sure to check out Carter’s XC Ski on the web (but not too soon, Jes is working on updates and new functionality now for the upcoming season :-), Instagram and Facebook.A few other links of interest:Feature on Jes and Carter’s XC Ski in the Lewiston Sun Journal (October 4, 2020)Fins & Furs Adventures - Maine Guide Training programMaine Sport Outfitters, Camden - Wilderness First Aid courseSunday RiverMahoosuc Ridge to the River ChallengeBaxter State Park - KatahdinDarn Tough socksL.L.Bean Stowaway Day PackAnd a special thanks to our sponsor, Evans Notch Lodge!
