Kentucky Newsmakers 7/12: KEA President Eddie Campbell, KACo Executive Director Jim Henderson

On the latest episode of Kentucky Newsmakers, WKYT’s Bill Bryant talks to the President of the Kentucky Education Association Eddie Campbell and the Kentucky Association of Counties Executive Director Jim Henderson.

Campbell weighs in on how KEA members, which represent some 44,000 members including aspiring and retired educators, are gearing up to head back to school for the first time since mid-March. He also talks about how teachers will provide instruction for both students at school and those who are learning from home, students who aren’t compliant with face coverings and other protective measures, and discusses the state budget.

If you ask a Kentuckian that grew up in the Commonwealth where they’re from, they’ll usually proudly name their county. Kentucky has 120 counties, and this is a very tough time for local governments. Henderson, executive director of KACo, joined WKYT to talk about the challenges facing counties.

While Coronavirus (COVID-19) is on the forefront of most of our minds, Race and Racial Injustice events in the US has forced the conversation to the forefront.

We have intentionally deliberated about whether to take a break from our normal content or keep pushing through. We have (had / continue to have) some incredible guests and topics lined up for 2020. In some cases, we have paused some topics and in others we feel like its necessary to continue with some of the Guests that we've invited to be apart of our conversations.

In today's episode, our host welcomes a new friend, Jim Henderson, a 71 year old brainiac, convener of people, and author to a pretty raw conversation around race and faith in American life, from his perspective. This episode was like a neighborly conversation over coffee/tea.

Jim Henderson on faith, fasteners, and finding the right people for the job

"In retrospect, of course, I didn't realize it then when he said, ‘Son, I don't give positions. I give opportunities. We'll see what you can do.’ But you know, now I sit here as the owner of the company, some 30 years later, and I've worked every position getting up to here, so I know how the company runs." ~Jim Henderson

Faith and fasteners may not seem like an obvious fit. For Jim Henderson, president of Dynamic Sales Company, Inc out of St. Louis, his beliefs and his business couldn’t be more compatible.

Jim shares his levelheaded business advice as well as some refreshingly honest insight into the role religion plays in his Christian-based company.

“The four points of our star logo are service, quality, commitment, and integrity. And those all line up with those principles that we gather from our faith.” Jim isn’t shy about his relationship with God. His religion is a tool for creating opportunities and maintaining an inclusive, successful family-run company.  From tithing on behalf of the company to incorporating two scripture passages into the Dynamic logo, Jim’s spiritual values are woven throughout the fabric of his life.

The value of deep connections informs Jim’s recruiting style as well. He’s a master at finding the right people for the right positions through seemingly unconventional relationships, finding candidates in unlikely places: a car dealership and a newspaper route.

“One of the things I try to find is what my brother and I used to term a servant's heart, someone's who is willing to serve the customer and put the customer's needs before their own.” Jim still uses traditional resources like LinkedIn and Indeed but he’s always on the lookout in his day-to-day interactions for fresh, forward-thinking talent.

Distribution Talk is produced by The Distribution Team, a consulting services firm dedicated to helping wholesale distribution clients remove barriers to profitability, generate wealth and achieve personal goals.

This episode was edited & mixed by The Creative Impostor Studios.

The value Jim places on service and relationship-building is also evident when he speaks about STAFDA, the trade organization his father helped start. He’s baffled by members who pay their dues but sit on the sidelines.

“Being able to use my network - and I have used that from coast to coast, North, South, East and West - and being able to connect with people,” he says, “they're always willing to help a fellow STAFDA member out.”

Likewise, Jim’s commitment to customer service has seen the industrial sector of Dynamic’s business grow considerably. That success is a credit to his expertise at pursuing relationships as avenues for growth, making sales calls instead of micro-managing from behind a desk. “I work on the big picture stuff,” he laughs. “I don't worry about the minutia of everything. That's handled by everybody here and I just focus on customers and I enjoy it.”

If you’re interested in the scriptures Jim quotes, they are John 14:6 and Matthew 6:33. He also mentions the following books: Business By The Book by Larry Burkett and Talk The Walk: How To Be Right Without Being Insufferable by Steve Brown.

Jim Henderson, Former ASU Standout and Pro Catcher's Amazing Story of "Perseverance" from Baseball to Real Life

Sometimes you hear a story that is so remarkable, it should be in a book--well this one was.  Campy memorialized the amazing story of his former USC teammate, Jim Henderson, in his book #1 Best Selling book, "Born Into Baseball", detailing his perseverance and grit when faced with a traumatic injury from a car accident right when he had just signed his pro baseball contract with the Montreal Expos.  This story is deeper than playing the game of baseball--this former baseball player kept grinding to beat the odds with much more at stake.  He tells a riveting story about rehabbing in the hospital for months on end, regaining some of the gifts he had lost, but feeling a sense of "surviver's guilt" as others were not progressing as well as he was.  He talks about his X-Rays being used for training Doctors who specialize in spinal injuries since Jim had the biggest spinal cord his Doctor had ever seen.  Jim is still the same smart ass as he was when we were young and now as a Lawyer--the prosecutors have their hands full!  And as always, there's the baseball small world syndrome as Jim (who had transferred from USC) and Lenny both played for the same Coach at ASU a decade apart.  This show transcends baseball as we all fall down or get hit with trials and tribulations--it's how you react that defines you.  You'll be inspired by Jim and his story--maybe even get a bit of strength to guide you through your current trial.
