‘Feed the Cats’ Sprint Coach Tony Holler

The FNF Coaches Talk Podcast

More and more football coaches are taking their cues from a high school track coach in Plainfield, Ill.  Tony Holler invented a revolutionary new method of training sprinters at Plainfield North High (Ill.) called “Feed the Cats.” It’s a minimalist approach to training which discourages putting sprinters through long workouts that make them feel crushed by the end. Topics include:Why sprint training needed to be done differently (2:30)What is the Feed the Cats program? (4:45)Why it took courage to do something differently (7:10)How he fills practice time with so few reps (11:30)How often athletes should be training at top speed (14:35)Record, record and publish (18:05)Never crush the physical or emotional soul of athletes (22:10)Micro-dose training (25:35)How does this impact injuries? (32:00)What technology helps coach? (36:35)Do you ever hear from parents who say you need to be training them harder? (39:55)

From the Ground Up Athletic Performance Podcast Episode 3 Tony Holler "Quality over Quantity"

From the Ground Up Athletic Performance Podcast

Welcome to Episode 3 of from the ground up, on todays episode I had the pleasure of setting down with Coach Tony Holler. Coach Holler is best known for his system Feed the Cats, that he developed while serving as a head track and field coach. Coach Holler is also  cofounder of the Track Football consortium a yearly gathering of individuals from the worlds of football, track, S&C and beyond. We discuss how to naturally foster a love for sprinting and how this is often distorted to make kids loathe what some deem as sprinting. We discuss the shift in the mentality of some sports prep coaches to a more sustainable and athletic centered approach. We focus on the why and when to implement minimum effective dosage in training. We discuss how weight training can be utilized to facilitate athletic qualities. We discuss his unique prep for the sprinting events in track. We examine how TFC started and where the idea of rebel talent came from. Lastly we discuss the benefits of supporting multisport athletes. Overall this was a great podcast and I think people from all aspects of sports and sports prep can derive something from it. Coach Holler is most active on twitter you can follow him @pntrack. Coach Holler also has a lot of great feed the cats material located on coachtube.com for a variety of sporting events. If you ever get the opportunity to attend a TFC, the guest list is phenomenal and I can guarantee that you will leave brimming with information. 8. Tony Holler

One More Jump - By RISE Pole Vault

Coach Tony Holler, the head men’s track and field coach at Plainfield North High School, has been on our podcast “wish list” for a while.  Why you ask? Because he is going against the grain on the classic track and field coaching model, and he is getting some great results.  He calls his coaching philosophy/method, Feed the Cats.  He believes in his concepts for developing speed very deeply and doesn’t really care what people have to say about it.  Like him or not, there is something refreshing about listening to someone who stays true to who they are even when they are under attack.
