JOSH MALERMAN - DAPHNE

House of Mystery Radio on NBC

Horror has a new name: Daphne. A brutal, enigmatic woman stalks a high school basketball team in a reimagining of the slasher genre by the New York Times bestselling author of Bird Box.It’s the last summer for Kit Lamb: The last summer before college. The last summer with her high school basketball team, and with Dana, her best friend. The last summer before her life begins. But the night before the big game, one of the players tells a ghost story about Daphne, a girl who went to their school many years ago and died under mysterious circumstances. Some say she was murdered, others that she died by her own hand. And some say that Daphne is a murderer herself. They also say that Daphne is still out there, obsessed with revenge, and will appear to kill again anytime someone thinks about her. After Kit hears the story, her teammates vanish, one by one, and Kit begins to suspect that the stories about Daphne are real . . . and to fear that her own mind is conjuring the killer. Now it’s a race against time as Kit searches for the truth behind the legend and learns to face her own fears—before the summer of her lifetime becomes the last summer of her life.Mixing a nostalgic coming-of-age story and an instantly iconic female villain with an innovative new vision of classic horror, Daphne is an unforgettable thriller as only Josh Malerman could imagine itSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. 84 – Dark Stars Roundtable, with John F.D. Taff, Livia Llewellyn & Josh Malerman

Talking Scared

This week is an orgy of horror. There are four of us. That makes it an orgy right? (I’ve never been to one – never got the invitation).Ahem … sorry.  I'll start again. This week I am joined by not one, but THREE guests. John F. D. Taff, Livia Llewellyn, and of course, Josh Malerman. We could call them stars from the firmament of horror. Dark Stars perhaps. That would be fitting, considering that’s what they are here to discuss (amongst many, many things). Dark Stars is a benchmark spook fest. An anthology of fiction that attempts to set the tone for where we are in our collective horror moment. John is the editor, Josh and Livia are contributors – amongst nine other names from the very forefront of the genre. Each story is different, with few tropes, little tradition and zero constricting theme. It’s just a collection of darkness, depravity and delight.John, Livia and Josh are old friends, old battle-companions from the horror vanguard. As such I’m essentially redundant this week. I just turned the show over to them and got out of the way. I make an attempt at order and structure – we talk about making horror weird as hell, about drawing fiction from life, about how we use and abuse tropes in this new horror landscape, but mostly it’s about community, friendship and weird, perverse joy in being creepy together.Oh, and Josh and I talk bad drug experiences, whilst Livia joins my fight to put sex back in horror!Enjoy!Dark Stars: New Tales of Darkest Horror is published on May 10th by Tor Nightfire in the US and Titan in the UK.Other books mentioned in this episode include:Dark Forces: New Stories of Suspense and Supernatural Horror (1980), ed. Kirby McCauleyThe House Next Door (1978), by Anne Rivers SiddonsRooster (2021), by John C. FosterDark Factory (2022), by Kathe KojeEvery Dead Thing (1999), by John ConnollyGhoul ‘n’ the Cape (2021), by Josh MalermanSupport Talking Scared on Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/TalkingScaredPodCome talk books on Twitter @talkscaredpod, on Instagram, and TikTok or email direct to talkingscaredpod@gmail.com Download Novellic on Google Play or Apple Store. Episode 3.28 - Playing Phantom Pianos with Josh Malerman

Ink Heist - A Podcast for Readers of Dark Fiction

This week, we have a very special show for you as we’re joined by special guest host and friend of Ink Heist, Brennan LaFaro. This week, we welcome Josh Malerman back to the show to celebrate the upcoming release of the highly anticipated novel Pearl, which hits shelves October 12th through Del Rey and the limited edition Ghoul N' The Cape, which is due out in December through Earthling Publications. It was a joy to sit down again with Josh, an imaginative storyteller whose enthusiasm for writing and the Horror genre is infectious. Pearl is Malerman channeling the spirit of vintage horror paperbacks and creating his most straight-up, in your face horror novel yet. We had the privilege of reading this one early and trust us when we say this one is packed with enough nightmare fuel to make it an essential read for the Halloween season. In addition to his upcoming releases this year, Josh was kind enough to share some details about a few of his unpublished works like that you don't want to miss! Throughout the course of the episode, we talked about Pearl, Ghoul N' The Cape, currently unpublished works, artistic momentum, Spin a Black Yarn, and so much more! We had a great time recording this episode and hanging out with Josh. We hope you guys enjoy the conversation as much as we did!
