68. Mickey Raphael

Middle Class Rock Star

My guest today is Mickey Rapahel. Although perhaps best known as Willie Nelson's touring harmonica player since 1973, he's not synonymous with any one thing he's done in his career. As a session musician or side person, Mickey has collaborated with the likes of: Jason Isbell, Townes Van Zandt, Chris Stapleton, Jerry Jeff Walker, Tom Morello, Paul Simon, Snoop Dogg, Neil Young, Norah Jones, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, Emmylou Harris, Leon Russell, Elton John, Mötley Crüe, Zac Brown Band, Dave Matthews... the list goes on. In the episode, we chat about how he first got into the harmonica, how lyrics inform his playing, home recording, and the art of being a session musician.Joining me as a co-host for this episode is MCRS alum and dear friend, Nic Clark. He's the best harmonica player I know, so along with my questions, Nic engages Mickey in some nerdy harp talk.If you enjoy the podcast, please let others know, subscribe or write a review. 5 star ratings and reviews on Apple Music as well as subscribing to our YouTube Channel help us out the most!!IF YOU'D LIKE TO SUPPORT THE PODCAST IN A MONETARY WAY, I'M NOW ON PATREON! https://www.patreon.com/andysydow You can support my artist career and this podcast for as little as $3 per month. Mickey Raphael interview

Happy Hour Harmonica Podcast

Mickey Raphael started out playing on the Dallas folk scene before meeting with Willie Nelson at a jam session. Forty six years later, Mickey has toured the world with Willie. Alongside that, Mickey has enjoyed great recording success as a session musician, playing with Emmylou Harris, the Highwayman Country Supergroup, U2, Wynton Marsalis, Ringo Starr, and more recently with Chris Stapleton. The list goes on and on. He played at Ray Charles funeral, and was most likely the inspiration for the Blues Brothers.Throughout it all Mickey has remained humble about his tremendous career playing the harmonica.Select the Chapter Markers tab above to select different sections of the podcast (website version only).Links:Mickey's website: http://www.mickeyraphael.com/Discography: https://rateyourmusic.com/artist/mickey_raphael/credits/YouTube:Mickey playing with Willie Nelson and Sheryl Crow: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSOBOJ10JZoMickey playing Georgia with Willie Nelson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mt8pgr7J6g0Mickey playing with Chris Stapleton: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4nP16bUVL8Also check out the Spotify Playlist, which contains some of the songs discussed in the podcast:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5QC6RF2VTfs4iPuasJBqwT?si=M-j3IkiISeefhR7ybm9qIQSponsor website:https://www.lonewolfblues.com

#39 (S2 Ep 8) - 46 Years & Counting as Willie Nelson's Harmonica Player, Mickey Raphael

The Happiness Quotient

(THESE NOTES WILL BE UPDATED)Mickey Raphael was given his first harmonica by an uncle who said if you can play Oh, Suzanna I'll give you the harmonica. Mickey would go on to play a whole lot more than that, having been Willie Nelson's harmonica player for over 46 years. He's played with the likes of Townes Van Zandt, Chris Stapleton, Tom Morello, Paul Simon, Snoop Dogg, Engelbert Humperdinck, Leon Bridges, Neil Young, Norah Jones, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, Duane Eddy, Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris, Leon Russell...DO I NEED TO SAY MORE? Mickey's story is a perfect fit for Baker Street with Thom Pollard. He picked up the harmonica and knew that he was destined to be a pro. His early influences include Sonny Boy Williamson, Sonny Terry & Brownie Mcghee and the legendary bluesman Paul Butterfield, with whom he soon became friends. Mickey tells a great story about playing with Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine fame, and how he introduced Tom's mom to Willie. Mickey's website is at mickeyraphael.comHand to Mouth, the music is courtesy of Mickey Raphael and Paul ButterfieldPaul Butterfield's One More Heartache, which Mickey plays before he hits the stage every night: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHMryjUnu58First song he ever played with Willie Nelson, Funny How Time Slips Away:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZaZqx9v3dUPLEASE VISIT ME AT eyesopenproductions.com - click on CONTACT and ask to be added to my mailing list.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/thehappinessquotient)

Music Makers and Soul Shakers with Steve Dawson

Mickey Raphael, Willie Nelson’s famed harmonica player, joins me on the show this month. And while he has graced the stage and recorded with Willie for over 45 years, Mickey has also racked up an incredible list of credits, working with Jason Isbell, Townes Van Zandt, Chris Stapleton, Tom Morello, Paul Simon, Snoop Dogg, Neil Young, Norah Jones, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, Emmylou Harris, Mötley Crüe, Wynton Marsalis, and many more. Mickey and I spoke over the phone on a Willie Nelson Tour stop, and had a chance to discuss his early days in the Dallas music scene, how he first sat in with Willie, and in his own words “just never left”, recording classic records like “Red Headed Stranger”, “Teatro” and “Stardust”, right up through Willie’s most recent records and his work with Chris Stapleton. Enjoy my conversation with Mickey Raphael!

Episode 25 with Mickey Raphael (Willie Nelson)

The Riff Raff with Shane Theriot

How do you land a gig with one of the icons of American music and keep it for 45 years? Ask todays guest- Mickey Raphael. Unless your name is Keith Richards,  I don’t know anyone who has had a gig for as long as he has, much less on harmonica. Mickey is one of the best harmonica players on the scene and has been a member of Willie Nelson’s band for over 4 decades. Besides all the great gigs with Willie, along the way he also recorded and performed with most of the greats- I’m talking about Neil Young, Leon Russell, Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan and it goes on and on.  In the interview we discuss his early years, how he landed the gig with Willie Nelson, recording on legendary records such as “Red Headed Stranger”,  "Stardust" and "Teatro", how he got the gig with Willie, Miles Davis stories, a funny Willie/ Hells Angels story, his influences, session work, working with Daniel Lanois, solo records, some jamming here and there and much more.  Recorded Jan. 2018  at Mickey’s home, Nashville TN.
