193 - How to Get Help for Addiction with Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Ricky Byrd

The Verywell Mind Podcast with Amy Morin

Ricky Byrd is a rock and roll guitar player, singer, songwriter, and music producer. For more than a decade, he was a member of Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, where he contributed background vocals and music to many albums, including two platinum albums and one gold album. His most famous song might be “I Love Rock 'n Roll,” which was released in 1981. For many years, Ricky lived what might be the “typical” musician lifestyle. He drank, used drugs, and partied hard as he toured around the world alongside other famous musicians like Paul McCartney, Alice Cooper, Bruce Springsteen, and Stevie Wonder. But Ricky made a decision to get sober over 30 years ago. Since then, he’s created a lot of new music that focuses on recovery and hope. He often performs at benefit shows to raise money for drug and alcohol treatment facilities. He’s become a certified recovery coach and drug and alcohol counselor. He frequently leads recovery music groups at treatment facilities around the United States. Some of the things he talks about are how his denial and desire to punish himself kept his substance abuse going, the one thing that inspired him to get help, and how he now helps other people who are struggling with addiction.

Day 141 - Ricky Byrd - You Live, You Die, and Every Once In A While You Get A Sandwich

Dystopia Tonight With John Poveromo

There’s no question that Ricky Byrd’s had an amazing music career. Touring with Joan Jet and the Blackhearts and giving a hilarious induction speech at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to recount a few stories from this show, but if you had told me he had a rich love for comedy and it’s history woven into all of it I may not have believed you. Thankfully I had the pleasure of having him on Dystopia to talk everything from his incredible career to hanging out and watching the best comics to ever take the stage and shoot from the hip when he was touring. We discuss favorite tv shows, rock legends he’s shared the stage with, his early influences, comedy and comedians, and we drop names you’ll definitely have to Google if you want to follow along. Most of all we have fun doing it. Enjoy!

EPISODE 39: Sobering Times with Ricky Byrd

Positive Recovery MD

This week, we are speaking with Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Ricky Byrd (2015 inductee with Joan Jett and The Blackhearts) (and guitarist/singer-songwriter). Having lived through the disease of addiction himself, Byrd has made it his mission to help others as a recovery coach and drug/alcohol counselor, who visits schools, rehab facilities, and detention and detox centers to perform, talk, and lead recovery music groups.  Byrd’s mission is to deliver the message of hope to those recovering from addiction. He expresses the roller coaster of emotions and every day trials of recovery, from hitting rock bottom, to the gratitude of surviving and thriving in a sober life. In fact, he gave away almost 2500 copies of Clean Getaway (2017) at these facilities, so clients could take the message of recovery home with them. In our conversation, Ricky shares his own recovery journey and how he went from being exposed to marijauna and alcohol at the age of 13 to now leading men and women on their personal recovery journeys. One of the biggest lessons Ricky learned early on is the power of listening to other people’s stories and being honest with his own thoughts and feelings.  Topics Discussed: Recognizing how addiction leads to compulsive, obsessive actions The importance of having a Recovery Toolbox and Positive Coping Skills How community helps us stay accountable in Recovery  Meditation as a form of listening and being present in the moment Why Recovery is about listening others and being honest with ourselves Learn More about Ricky Byrd: Website: https://rickybyrd.com Kayos Productions: https://www.kayosproductions.com/ricky-byrd Connect with Positive Recovery MD Podcast Website: https://www.positiverecoverymd.com Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/577870242872032 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4JcDF1gjlYch4V4iBbCgZg Connect with Positive Recovery Centers Online: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/positiverecoverycenters/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PositiveRecoveryCenters/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/positiverecoverycenters/ Contact Positive Recovery Centers:If you or someone you know needs help, visit the website, or call the number below to schedule an assessment.
