This week we are bringing back Darius Sam an incredible young ultrarunner who has combined his love of the sport and his passion for serving his community.Last summer 19 year old Darius came on the podcast to talk about his first attempt at a 100 miler in which, by pushing his body to its absolute limits, he was able to raise over $90,000 for his local food bank.  During that run he collapsed near the end and was rushed to the hospital.In December he decided to give the same route another shot, this time with the goal of raising money to help establish a Men's Mental Health Program in Nicola Valley. Learning from his first 100 miler he went out and crushed it, setting his sights on some BIG TIME goals for 2021! In this episode we chat all about the lessons he learned from his first 100 and how he applied them to his second.  We also discuss the necessity of funding mental health programs especially in the time of COVID, how serving others can help you clarify your purpose, and what big goals are on the horizon for Darius.Can't wait to share this episode with you! Darius Sam — a 19 year old Indigineous man — joined Steph 48 hours after running 100 miles to raise money for his local food bank. At the end of 2019 Darius was still using drugs and alcohol heavily, but he began 2020 with determination and a new vision of what is possible. He moved home, created a rigid sleep and work-out routine, and found a renewed sense of determination and purpose. 6 months later, and Darius is still pushing himself to find the edge of what he can accomplish.So far, Darius has completed a self-made Ironman distance triathlon — completing only one week of training prior. After becoming inspired by a youtube video, Darius decided his next challenge was to run 100-miles for a cause. After visiting his local food bank, and recognizing the need in his community — he began raising funds. #123 — Redefining what’s possible w/ Darius Sam

Three days ago 19 year old Darius Sam pushed through anguish, adversity and 100 plus miles of PURE GRIT.His story is quite remarkable.  After years of struggle, one day Darius looked himself in the mirror and realized just how much potential he was wasting.  He pulled himself together, started waking up at 3am to work and powerlift and decided to complete an ironman on minimal training.  Once that was accomplished he was determined to really see how far he could push his limits so he set his sights on taking on 100 miles.  Around the same time of his self betterment, Darius realized just how people in his community were struggling.  Really wanting to prove to himself that "one person can make a huge difference" he decided that he would use the experience of suffering through an ultra marathon to raise money for the local food bank.  So he set a goal of $1,000.  Through the last week and through all the ups and downs of his run, that number has exploded!! We are releasing this episode early in the week in hopes that we can contribute in some way to Darius's GoFundMe for the Nicola Valley Food Bank (link below).  Also I wanted to put the show out there just because I'm so damn impressed by Darius and his determination!
